Congressman Garret Graves has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at lowering insurance rates that would make it a federal crime to stage a vehicle collision and fraudulently claim financial damages. The bill Graves introduced targets those involved in staging accidents, collecting from insurance companies and in turn leading to higher insurance rates for the public.

Cut 5 (11) “…in the process.”

At last word, 50-year-old Sharon Whatley of Eros continued to be held at the Ouachita Correctional Center, but she’s no big-time criminal. In fact, despite her protestations to authorities, she wasn’t wanted on any kind of criminal charges, until she refused to leave the parking lot of the sheriff’s office annex.

Cut 7 (08) “…numerous times.”

That’s sheriff’s spokesman, Glenn Springfield, who says Whatley was eventually arrested Saturday afternoon on a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge.

The Louisiana election season for 2021 has finally ended with the December 11th election and while voter turnout was low as predicted LaPolitics.com Editor Jeremy Alford says one race, in particular, should grab national headlines with Democrat Susan Hutson unseating four-term incumbent Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman with 53-percent of the vote.

Brian Trascher with the United Cajun Navy says their field team arrived in Madisonville, Kentucky on Sunday which is about 90 miles away from Mayfield and near other areas that were devastated by tornados overnight Friday. Trascher says the immediate needs are tarps and water and unlike you can prepare days in advance for a hurricane…

Cut 9 (08) “…really, really bad.”

A 50-year-old Eros woman is jailed at the Ouachita Correctional Center on criminal trespass charges after being told twice to leave from the sheriff’s office parking lot Saturday afternoon. Sheriff’s spokesman, Glenn Springfield, identified the person as Sharon Whatley.

 Cut 6 (12) “…to leave.”

Springfield says the woman says she was wanted on charges, but it was determined she wasn’t. So since she wouldn’t leave, she’s now facing a lone misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass.

If you’re wondering why your insurance rates are so high in Louisiana, Congressman Garret Graves it’s blamed in part on staged accidents, the most egregious example taking place in the Big Easy in recent years. Graves has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at lowering insurance rates that would make it a federal crime to stage a vehicle collision and fraudulently claim financial damages. He says these staged accidents have financial consequences beyond those directly attributed to the staged crashes, one ring said to be responsible for more than 100 of them.

Consumer prices jumped a whopping 6.8 percent in November, the largest annual increase in 39 years. LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott believes inflation is in part a product of supply-and-demand and discounts the possibility of collusion to boost prices and thus stir up the inflationary pot.

Fifteen fatal crashes leading to 26 deaths. That is the updated toll for the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The accidents are blamed on a variety of things including distracted driving, driver impairment and speeding. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallet asks that if you witness someone behind the wheel who could be impaired or driving aggressively, please call law enforcement.

November consumer prices jumped 6.8 percent in November compared to a year earlier. That’s the highest annual inflation rate in nearly four decades. LSU economist, Dr. Loren Scott, says fixing the supply chain issues won’t likely do much to erase inflation. Scott talks about what he says is the inflationary impact of a very accommodating monetary policy by the Federal Reserve as being a major cause for rising prices.

Cut 7 (11) “…is right now.”

Thanksgiving weekend was among the deadliest on Louisiana roadways this year with 15 crashes responsible for now 26 fatalities. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says after reviewing data from law enforcement a majority of the traffic fatalities were caused by speeding, impaired, or distracted driving all of which are preventable.

Cut 10 (07)  “…a lot.”

Tomorrow is Election Day for 34 Louisiana parishes, consisting of local matters, municipal runoffs, some tax proposals, and gaming for St. Tammany Parish. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says he already expected voter turnout to be low due to only a few things on the ballot, but inclement weather could reduce earlier predictions. In St. Tammany however, Ardoin says early voting there was significant and he expects the largest turnout to be in the southeast parish to decide if they will allow a gaming casino in Slidell.

Cut 13 (09) “…and vote.”

In addition to gaming in St. Tammany, Ardoin says there are several races to be decided in the neighboring parish of Orleans.

Saturday is Election Day in many parts of Louisiana, but there are only ballots to be cast in 34 parishes; all have local matters, tax proposals and runoff races to decide. “LAPolitics.com” editor Jeremy Alford says one parish to watch Saturday night is Caddo Parish, where voters must decide on a $237-million bond package for investments in the water system, technology, infrastructure & public safety. It’s one he says Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins is pushing hard, but some are pushing back…:

Cut 4 (08) “…referendum on the mayor. “

Alford says Orleans Parish has a runoff for sheriff, with 4-term incumbent Marlin Gusman facing a tough challenge from fellow Democrat Susan Hutson. A lot of money has been thrown into Hutson’s campaign to unseat the longtime sheriff, so the race bears watching. Alford says another to watch is in Monroe, in Ouachita Parish, and an attempt to recall Mayor Gerald Brown …:

Cut 5 (11) “…back in the Big Seat.”

And then there’s St. Tammany Parish and the vote on allowing a Bossier City casino license to move to Slidell for a multi-million dollar casino resort and sports complex. Gaming has been banned in that parish since the late 1990s. Alford says he expects local voters will want to show up and have their voices heard…:

Cut 6 (13) “…a lot of interest there.”

The casino license move has been OK’ed by state gaming officials, but the will not move forward if voters reject it. Polls open at 7 am Saturday and close at 8 pm. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin predicts only about a 10-percent total voter turnout statewide.

If you don’t quite feel in the Christmas spirit, the weather probably has something to do with that. State Meteorologist Barry Keim says you can get ready for a “wild ride” with some significant changes, but not right now:

Cut 7 (08) “…un-December like obviously.”

But he says a cold front is headed our way upping the chances of rain overnight and into Saturday, with some possible severe weather, mainly across the northern part of the state. The balmy weather will be gone by Sunday with temps dipping into the 30s and 40s under clear skies.

Keim doesn’t expect the rain to be on the heavy side prior to moving out, followed by much colder weather Sunday.

Cut 8 (08) “…so plan accordingly.”

Keim says as the cold front approaches, the warm side of it will bring with it the chance for severe weather and the possibility of hail and tornadoes.

Cut 9 (09)  “…of the state.”

He says the daylight hours on Saturday will be the most transitional day, with a narrow line of stormy weather expected to cross the state as the cold front moves southeastward, though drenching, flooding-type rains are not expected.

For the 9th year, Louisiana has made a national list of the nation’s Top Ten “Judicial Hellholes”. The American Tort Reform Foundation’s list is for the most litigious states or court systems, where trials can go on indefinitely and arbitration is discouraged. Louisiana Law Abuse Watch Executive Director Lana Venable says we went from 5th Worst last year to 6th Worst for 2020…:

Cut 4 (13) “…civil justice system. “

California, New York State, the Pennsylvania and Georgia Supreme Courts and the Chicago court systems all ranked worse than Louisiana, as places where it can be hard to get a fair trial in civil court. Venable says Louisiana has made the ATRF’s hellholes list 12 of the past 20 years and 2020 marks the 9th straight year in the Top Ten. She says tort reforms passed in the 2020 legislature will help to get our state off the list…:

Louisiana will receive $7.25 billion in guaranteed funding from the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that was signed by the president last month. Secretary of Labor Martin Walsh says the funding allocated for states is unprecedented.

Cut 7 (09) “…in decades.”

$5.8 billion will go towards roads and bridges in Louisiana and $470 million for public transportation. $580 million will be dedicated to renovating outdated water systems.

$380 million will go towards airports, electric vehicle charging stations, and broadband in Louisiana. Like other states, the pandemic only highlighted the digital divide in rural areas. Walsh says it’s important we help close that gap.

As the state reports more probable cases of the Omicron variant in Louisiana, Pfizer says the third dose of their vaccine may offer more protection to the variant as opposed to only two doses.
