The Army Corps of engineers says they have activated levee patrols in southeast Louisiana due to high water levels on the Mississippi River. Spokesman Ricky Boyett says the gauge on the river in New Orleans reached 11 which is a “trigger” to start the additional lookouts…:

Joseph Miller Jr, the patriarch of an iconic Monroe family who has owned Miller Funeral Homes for nearly a century, died Monday. Miller’s father Joseph Miller Sr. founded the funeral home in 1935. They have operations throughout northeastern Louisiana and are headquartered in Monroe.

A 16-year-old accused in the stabbing death of an 18-year-old allegedly over taking a girl to a school dance in Ascension Parish pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Authorities say Jacob Westbrook is being tried as an adult in the death of 18-year-old Todd Toups. Investigators believe Toups went to a girl’s home in October to take her to the dance where he was met with Westbrook and murdered.

Heroin is becoming a nationwide epidemic and authorities continue to see the number of overdose deaths in Louisiana increase. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark says there have been a record number of deaths in the area he covers in 2015 — a 9% increase over 2013. He says they’ve seen a recent change in potency in many batches of heroin across the state which in some cases have instantly killed the user…:

He says 38 people have died from heroin over doses in East Baton Rouge alone in 2015.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says an employee, who was found dead in her personal vehicle Monday morning, is identified as a JPSO sergeant. They say 47-year-old Tracey Marshall was found in the driver’s seat of her red pickup truck, shot multiple times, and pronounced dead at the scene. Marshall, a 10-year veteran of the office, was a sergeant assigned to the courts as a bailiff. The investigation is ongoing.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney has formally charged two former Destrehan High School teachers accused of having a three-way sexual encounter with a 16-year-old student. 33-year-old Shelly Dufrense faces two counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. 25-year-old Rachel Respess is charged with one count of failure to report the commission of certain felonies. In April, Dufrense agreed to a plea deal in St. Charles Parish on a separate, similar incident that allowed her to avoid jail time or having to register as a sex offender.

Overall, Beckham had 7 catches for 166 yards. Eli Manning threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns as the Giants are now in a three way tie atop the NFC East.

The Pelicans road trip continues tomorrow night at Utah.

In college hoops last night, Louis Dabney scored 24 to lead Tulane to a 63-49 win over Prairie View A&M and Nicholls State drops to 3-5 on the season after losing to North Texas 78-60.

Shell has announced they will cut an additional 2,800 jobs as crude oil prices hover multi-year lows. The company previously announced a cut of 7,500 jobs. LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott says, with crude oil prices below $40 a barrel, the entire industry is almost in a panic mode…:

Scott says as long as Saudi Arabia floods the market with crude oil, prices will not improve forcing oil companies to continue to cut back.

The Army Corps of Engineers says they are inspecting levees for signs of seepage or failure from Baton Rouge south as the Mississippi River rises above 12 and a quarter feet above sea level in New Orleans. In Baton Rouge the water level was at 31 feet Monday. Restrictions during the high water period include no transportation of heavy loads over the levee and no underground work within 1500 feet of the levee.

McNeese State’s Matt Viator will be the next head football coach at ULM. Viator will be officially introduced at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday morning. Viator has spent his entire coaching career in Louisiana and is very familiar with the state as it relates to recruiting. The voice of the Warhawks, West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman, says the Warhawk Nation is looking forward to seeing if Viator is up to the challenge of turning things around in Monroe…

In college basketball action Sunday, ULM wrapped up its three game road trip with a 100-58 loss to 14th ranked West Virginia. Senior Jamaal Samuel had a career-high 19 points in a losing effort.

Tonight, Tulane hosts Prairie View A&M, while Nicholls State plays at North Texas.

The Saints snapped a four-game losing streak yesterday as they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-17. Saints quarterback Drew Brees had two TD throws in the game and moved past Dan Marino into fourth place all-time with 421 career touchdown passes. Brees says its a humbling honor…
