A shooting at a club rental in Alexandria kills a 17-year-old male and injures two others. Alexandria Police spokesperson Lt. Lane Windham says they were called to Club 318 just before midnight Saturday after shots were fired inside the building. Police are also investigating why so many people were in attendance at the club that night.

In just six weeks the NCAA men’s Final Four returns to New Orleans. The Superdome has hosted more Final Fours than any other venue, but this is the first since 2012. Today, the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and Governor John Bel Edwards started the unofficial countdown to the championship and touted the impact of the return of one of the nation’s biggest sporting events.

The Final Four is expected to bring more than 75-thousand visitors to The Crescent City, generating an economic impact of $170 million.

Authorities say no fatalities or major injuries are reported after an explosion at the Marathon Refinery plant in Garyville this morning.  St. John Parish President Jaclyn Hotard says it happened shortly after 9 am and they’ve received several calls from those in the community that heard the explosion of the unit at the refinery.

The LSU women’s basketball team continues to roll. The Tigers beat number 17 Florida on Sunday, 66-61. With the victory, LSU claims sole possession of second place in the SEC standings and climbs to number eight in the A-P rankings. It’s the highest the Tigers have been since the 2007-08 season when they reached the Final Four. Before beating back the Gators, Kim Mulkey told her team to enjoy the moment.

Alexis Morris scored a game-high 20 points for LSU.

After a three-game sweep of Maine where LSU scored a program-record 51 runs, it should come as no surprise that one of the Tigers has earned the first SEC Player of the Week award of the new season. Sophomore infielder Cade Doughty was selected for the honor after batting .571 with three doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, and 12 driven in over 14 at-bats.

The U-L Cajuns took two of three from 14th-ranked Cal-Irvine, the defending Big West Conference Champions, over the weekend. UNO won three games over three different opponents at the Andre Dawson Classic, while UL-M dropped two of three against Southern Illinois. Louisiana Tech swept its three-game set with Wichita State, with reliever Kyle Crigger earning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors after picking up a win and a save in two scoreless appearances.

Dennis Allen continues to fill out his staff, as University of Tennessee receivers coach Kodi Burns has been hired for the same role with the New Orleans Saints, according to a report by ESPN. The Saints have struggled to find consistent production at the wideout position over the last two seasons with Michael Thomas missing 26 of the 33 games in that time. Last season, Marquez Callaway led the team with 698 yards, the lowest total for a Saints top receiver since Eric Martin’s 675 in 1986.

Back in Baton Rouge, LSU’s new receivers coach and passing game coordinator, Cortez Hankton, will remain with the team after interviewing with the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Hankton joined Brian Kelly’s staff last month after four seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs.

The State Fire Marshal’s office says a six-year-old child rescued from a burning mobile home in New Iberia has died. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says two adults and six children were inside the home on Sunday afternoon when the fire started and the six-year-old was the only one that didn’t get out safely.

Rodrigue says the exact cause of the fire is not yet known.

With four games left in the regular season, the LSU men’s basketball team is 7-and-7 in the SEC tied with three other teams for fifth place. The Tigers let one get away on Saturday as they fell to South Carolina 77-75. Tari Eason had 21 points to lead the way for the Tigers, but he also had six turnovers, including a critical one with 1:43 left that led to a South Carolina dunk and a three-point Gamecocks lead…

The LSU women, however, continue to roll. The 11th-ranked Tigers beat number 17 Florida on Sunday, 66-61. On the diamond, Bulldogs baseball took three from Wichita State. In Lafayette, the Ragin Cajuns won their series with 14th-ranked Cal-Irvine and UNO won three straight as hosts of the Andre Dawson Classic.

The Jay Johnson-era of LSU baseball is off to a swinging start. The Tigers opened the season with a three-game sweep of Maine and in doing so, scored a program-record 51 runs topping the previous record of 45 set against Western Kentucky in 1996. LSU batters combined to hit .388 with 45 hits, including seven home runs and 49 RBI.

A new era of LSU baseball begins tonight as the Tigers start a three-game weekend series against the Maine Black Bears at Alex Box Stadium. LSU’s preseason rankings range from as high as third from Collegiate Baseball to tenth from Baseball America. There are a lot of new faces on the team, including first-year head coach Jay Johnson who says he doesn’t have a set line-up just yet…

The New Orleans Pelicans stumbled into the All-Star break on a four-game losing streak, but the Pels will be represented in Cleveland during the weekend’s festivities. Rookie Herb Jones will participate in Friday night’s Rising Stars game featuring NBA rookies, sophomores, and players from the NBA G-League Unite. And recently acquired CJ McCollum takes the stage on Saturday with his third appearance in the three-point shooting contest.

We’re in the thick of Mardi Gras season and New Orleans and Company spokesperson Kelly Schulz says you can’t underestimate the economic, cultural, emotional, and impact of Mardi Gras 2022. Schulz says there’s plenty of pent-up demand to return to the beloved tradition of carnival season.

Schulz says people were lining up as early as 8 o’clock Friday morning along parade routes for the evening parades.

In addition to anticipation from locals, Schulz says hotel-wise things are indicative of a good turnout from tourists.

And Schulz says that’s also a good indicator of strong turnout for festival season.

In addition to hotel occupancy increasing Schulz says King Cake sales are off the charts this year and bakeries are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

Schulz says hotel occupancy is also in the 80-percent range for next weekend thru Fat Tuesday, but they are hoping that will increase.

The Krewe of Janus (Janice) rolls Saturday night in Monroe and there’s plenty of excitement for the return of the parade that’s been a staple of the Twin Cities, Monroe, and West Monroe, since 1984. Throws Lieutenant Hailey Kenly says they are prepared with 3.5 million throws for attendees, especially youngsters.

The theme of this year’s parade is Janus Goes to Hollywood. Kenly says the King and Queen’s floats shave specialty throws that are quite collectible.

Kenly says it was extremely emotional having to cancel last year’s parade and so that makes this year’s event even more special. As Throws Lieutenant for the Krewe of Janus, Kenly is in charge of ordering and distributing throws and knows firsthand there’s more than three million to catch from 28 floats, so be well prepared to carry your loot home.

At last year’s NFL Draft, not a single player from a Historically Black College or University was taken, with only one being selected in 2020. The HBCU Legacy Bowl, created by Grambling football legends James “Shack” Harris and Doug Williams, seeks to change that. Williams says that the game will be a showcase for scouts to check out some great undiscovered talent.

The game is Saturday at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium, and the players have had a full week of practices along with other events. One is a job fair featuring more than 40 companies. He says he understands that most won’t make an NFL roster, so providing real post-graduate employment options for these players is an essential part of the game’s mission.

First and foremost this game is about opportunity. With 98 draft-eligible players taking the field at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium tomorrow and more than two dozen NFL scouts expected to be in attendance, Williams is excited about the possibility of the Legacy Bowl helping pro dreams become a reality.

Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Lutlow announced that she is part of a congressional contingent making an official visit to Israel. The trip is in an effort to discuss strategic partnerships between our two countries, get updates on the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, and political and economic issues within the region. Lutlow returns on Feb. 26.

Online sportsbooks took in nearly $40.5 million during their first four days of operation in Louisiana, the best four-day debut for any market in the country according to PlayUSA.com. But Thursday, Donna Jackson, gaming auditor for the Louisiana State Police, reported that the six companies licensed to operate in the state reported collective losses of nearly $9 million dollars as they pushed incentives to attract bettors.

A new era of LSU baseball begins tonight as the Tigers begin a three-game weekend series against the Maine Black Bears at Alex Box Stadium. Right-hander Blake Money will take the mound as the Tigers’ opening day starter. Last season as a freshman, Money appeared in 15 games, making two starts, while recording a 1-2 record with an 8.68 ERA. First-year head coach Jay Johnson says that Money should be just that for LSU. With a live arm and multiple pitches at his disposal, he’s the guy he wants on the hill.

The 11th-ranked LSU women took care of business on the road, beating Mississippi State, 71-59, extending its winning streak to five games. The Tigers went into the fourth quarter trailing by two, then outscored the Bulldogs 24-10 in the fourth. Alexis Morris scored a game-high 23 points, with Khayla Pointer adding 18.

The Bulldogs saw their three-game basketball win streak come to an end, falling 60-63 to UTEP last night at the Thomas Assembly Center. Tech shot a season-low 34 percent from the floor but still had its chances late. Cobe Williams led the Bulldogs with 19 points, with Kenneth Lofton Jr. racked up his 15th double-double with 12 points and 16 boards.

CJ McCollum scored a season-high 38 points, but they weren’t enough to overcome 49 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists from Luka Doncic, as the Pelicans lost to the Mavericks, 118-125. New Orleans goes into the All-Star break on a four-game losing streak.

And the College Football Playoff will remain at four teams through the 2025 season.

Louisiana will receive approximately $75 million over the next five years to build electric vehicle charging stations. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says it’s critical because car manufacturers will be making more EVs in the future and Louisiana needs to be prepared so citizens can take advantage of their value.

18-year-old Jaden Michael Ardoin of Port Barre faces first-degree and attempted murder charges after following two brothers in his vehicle and allegedly firing shots Tuesday night near Melville because the two routinely flirted with his girlfriend. St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Eddie Thibodaux says investigators were able to secure video footage from the gas station where the two brothers interacted with Ardoin’s girlfriend.

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board is giving Pacific Peninsula Entertainment 60 more days to sell the closed Diamond Jacks Casino in Bossier City. Diamond Jacks shut its doors in May of 2020 and P-2-E attempted to build a new facility in Slidell, but St. Tammany Parish voters shot down that proposal in December. Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns says this is P-2-E’s last extension…

The 11th-ranked LSU women are on the road tonight to face Mississippi State. The Tigers have won four in a row, and are led by the reigning SEC Player of the Week, Alexis Morris. While LSU is picking up wins, offense has been a struggle for the Tigers at times. Kim Mulkey isn’t worried about that. She’s far more concerned about her team getting stops than she is about getting buckets.

The New Orleans Pelicans look to end their six-game homestand and go into the All-Star break on a high note. They enter tonight’s contest with the Dallas Mavericks with a 2-3 record over the first five games at the Smoothie King Center and are coming off of a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Pels have fallen a game and a half behind Portland for the 10th seed in the Western Conference.

Louisiana bettors wagered nearly $40.5 million in the first four days that mobile sports betting was available, according to figures released by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. At the state’s 13 retail sportsbooks, nearly $50 million was wagered during January, with $5.3 million in revenue generated.

The New Orleans Saints have decided to stick with Pete Carmichael as the team’s offensive coordinator, as reported by the NFL Network. Carmichael joined Sean Payton’s staff in 2006 and was promoted to the OC position in 2009. The Saints reportedly interviewed former Washington head coach Jay Gruden, Dallas assistant Robert Prince and Indianapolis coach Scottie Montgomery for the offensive coordinator role before deciding to stick with Carmichael.

Another NFL player is a suspect in the assault case against Saints running back Alvin Kamara. A Las Vegas news station is reporting that Chris Lammons of the Kansas City Chiefs was also involved in the altercation the night before the Pro Bowl. So far, two other associates of Kamara have been arrested with police still searching for Lammons.

The LHSAA Soccer Championships scheduled for today have been postponed until Saturday due to weather. The girls Division I title match between Dominican and St. Joseph’s is now set for 4:30 pm Saturday, with the boys DI match between Catholic of Baton Rouge and Dutchtown will follow at 7:30 pm.

Yesterday, St. Thomas More claimed both the Division II girls and boys championships. University Lab and Newman took the boys Division III and IV titles respectively, with Loyola Prep and Sacred Heart winning the girls championships in those divisions earlier in the week.
