Former LSU basketball player and Ukraine native, Roman Rubchenko (pronounced: roob-CHENK-oh) shares his feelings on the Russian invasion; now in its second week. Rubchenko and some family and friends are currently safe in a rural community area several miles south of the capital city of Kyiv. He says the resolve of the Ukraine people to resist the invaders is strong.

Earlier today it was reported that Russian troops had taken more areas on Ukraine’s southern coast with President Putin pledging to achieve his goals in Ukraine “no matter what.”

Senate confirmation hearings for U-S Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will begin on March 21. If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black female to be seated on the Supreme Court bench. That historic possibility has stirred emotions and inspired the next generation of the Black legal community. Southern University Student Bar Association President Nzhada (Nih-jay-da) Harris is among them.

The Lake Providence Police Department is closed for business after Mayor Jerry Bell says Police Chief Leroy Threats exhausted his annual budget in mid-February. Threats reportedly says he doesn’t know how the department is out of money when he’s only been there a year and hasn’t spent technically anything. Bell says he’s not sure what Threats is thinking because he’s been in communication with him about the fiscal budget that runs from July to June for the last seven months.

A Louisiana constitutional amendment went into effect in 2007 limiting legislators to three full-consecutive terms in one House, which is 12 years. Lafayette representative Stuart Bishop says that’s not enough time to know all of the inner workings of law-making. He says a business would not limit a person’s occupation to 12 years…

In Alexandria, United Airlines will suspend service to AEX beginning in June. Executive Director of Alexandria International Sandra McQuain says the suspension is indefinite and next month American Airlines will halt service from Alexandria to Charlotte.

The annual NFL Scouting Combine started Tuesday, with several prominent LSU prospects looking to impress as the draft nears. Butkus Award Finalist Damone Clark should draw plenty of interest. After collecting 114 tackles in his first three seasons in Baton Rouge, Clark had 135 last season for the Tigers, including 5.5 sacks, and earned Second-team All-America honors from multiple outlets. His nose for the football and his sideline to sideline ability has pushed his name up draft boards says NFL analyst Mike Detillier.

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that it was canceling the opening two series of the 2022 season after the players union unanimously rejected what was called the owners’ final offer. Nine straight days of negotiations failed to produce a new collective bargaining agreement. Instead, baseball will extend the ninth work stoppage in the sport’s history, and the fourth to cause the cancellation of games. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said there are no plans at this time to make up those games and players will not be paid.

Louisiana Tech closes out the home portion of its schedule tonight when they host Old Dominion at the Thomas Assembly Center. The Bulldogs are 11-and-5 in Conference USA, third place in the West. The Monarchs are 7-and-9 in league play, but Tech Coach Eric Konkol says Old Dominion is playing its best basketball of the season…

The LSU men’s basketball team has another important test tonight as they go on the road to face 14th-ranked Arkansas. The Tigers still have an outside shot at the fifth seed in the SEC tournament. Nicholls and UNO continue their fight for the top seed in the Southland…the Colonels visit Texas A&M Corpus-Christi and the Privateers host Houston Baptist.

At the Smoothie King Center tonight, the New Orleans Pelicans will be gunning for their third consecutive win as they host the Sacramento Kings. The Pels are 10th in the Western Conference Standings and just two games behind the Lakers for ninth.

It’s a day of revelry and parades in south Louisiana as thousands are celebrating Mardi Gras Day after COVID-19 and a winter storm kept people inside last year. New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell turned over a key to the city to the King of Rex, James Reiss III. He asked that citizens do only one thing today.

As President Biden preps for his State of the Union Address, US Senator Bill Cassidy says he believes it will be clear in tonight’s speech, that the Biden Administration is not alleviating the pains impacting Americans, specifically record inflation that’s crushing the middle class.

Cassidy says in the first year of Biden’s presidency, America’s economy has suffered greatly with inflation at a 40 year high. Cassidy also believes the best way to address Russia, as they invade Ukraine, is through a tough energy policy. The State of the Union will air at 8 pm tonight.

An elderly Shreveport couple was killed Monday afternoon when the car 81-year-old Louis Flanigan was driving failed to yield to an oncoming Freightliner along US Highway 84 in Desoto Parish. Trooper Jonathan Odom says, 80-year-old Inell Flannigan, the driver’s wife was also killed.

Odom says the Jaguar was struck twice and the couple was pronounced dead on the scene.

Less than a week after it was announced that Art Briles would be Hue Jackson’s offensive coordinator at Grambling, Briles decided to step down, resigning from the staff on Monday. Reports show that from 2011 to 2015 Briles ignored or covered up more than 50 sexual and physical assaults by players during his time at Baylor. Dr. Jim Henderson, president of the U-L system says that Jackson may have had good intentions in trying to redeem Briles, but the decision was poorly considered.

Less than a week after it was announced that Art Briles would be Hue Jackson’s offensive coordinator at Grambling, Briles decided to step down, resigning from the staff on Monday. UL System president Dr. Jim Henderson said that student safety is a priority and that the hiring of Briles sent a message that was inconsistent with the values the system has worked to promote and rules they have committed to enforce.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the first two series of the 2022 regular season have been cancelled after the players union unanimously agreed to not accept the final offer made by the owners. Due to schedules and tickets already sold, it is unlikely those games will be made up. Opening Day was scheduled for March 31, and now the start of the season is completely up in the air. The union says that the league made very few concessions during negotiations and the two sides are still far apart on a new collective bargaining agreement. The owners locked out the players in December, but the two sides did not begin meeting until late February.

On the college diamond, plenty of intrastate matchups on the docket. McNeese visits Southern looking to extend its four-game win streak. Tulane drives up to Hammond to take on Southeastern. UL and Northwestern State play the first of a home-and-home series in Natchitoches. UL-M is on the road at number two Mississippi, and Louisiana Tech starts a five-game road stretch at Nicholls.

With only two weeks to go until Selection Sunday, the LSU women’s basketball team is in position to grab a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament based on the selection committee’s final top-16 list of the regular season. As a top-16 seed LSU would host first and second-round games at the PMAC. The Tigers have not hosted an NCAA tournament game since 2014, and haven’t been a top-16 seed since 2008.

Postseason basketball awards season has begun…LSU’s Khayla Pointer and Alexis Morris were both named to the All-SEC team. Pointer was selected to the first team after leading the largest single-season turnaround in SEC history for the 25-4 Tigers. She finished third in the conference in scoring and second in assists. Morris earned Second Team honors after averaging 15.8 points and 1.8 steals per game.

Less than a week after it was announced that Art Briles would be Hue Jackson’s offensive coordinator at Grambling, Briles has decided to step down. Briles notified the university on Monday, a school spokesperson confirmed, that he did not want to be a distraction to the team. Jackson and Grambling have been under a wave of criticism since last Thursday when the hiring was originally announced. Briles was terminated with cause by Baylor in 2016 after investigators uncovered at least 52 sexual and physical assaults committed by players that were either ignored or covered up by Briles and his staff.

The Sun Belt Conference is dealing with controversy on the football field of a different kind. The conference released its 2022 football schedule, and it includes Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion. The problem is that last month, Conference USA released its schedule, which included those three schools as well. The trio of programs accepted invites to join the SBC last fall, but have been in a legal battle to push their move-in date up from 2023 to now. Opening games are just six months away.

Southern maintained its hold on third place in both the SWAC men’s and women’s basketball standings with a doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M. The SWAC tourney begins next week.

A two-vehicle crash last night in Acadia Parish has claimed the lives of two men.  20-year-olds Derrick Ceasar Jr. and Tywon Thorn, both of Crowley, were pronounced dead at the scene. State Trooper Thomas Gossen says their Buick Century crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a Ford Expedition…

Mardi Gras has been a welcome boost to the state, especially in the metro-New Orleans area but also in the Hub City, where President of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission, Ben Berthelot says they’ve seen an influx of tourists, and hotel occupancy is up.

On Fat Tuesday, Berthelot says they’ll have three parades rolling with things kicking off at 10 am with King Gabriel and culminating with the Independent parade.

As the Russia-Ukraine crisis continues, so does the steady rise in fuel prices. According to Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for gasbuddy.com, concerns about overseas oil production and increasing demand should keep prices up for a while.

With this conflict coming on the heels of the pandemic, the pace of production has not been able to keep up with demand as countries try to get back to normal. Louisiana currently averages $3.35 per gallon, up 97 cents from a year ago.

LSU’s women’s basketball team beat Tennessee in Knoxville for just the fourth time in program history, topping the Lady Vols, 57-54 Sunday, and clinched the second-seed in this week’s SEC tournament. The Tigers, now ranked fifth nationally, have won eight in a row and 10 of their last 11 ball games. Kim Mulkey says all credit goes to the players.

Cut 22 (9) “…find ways to win.”

LSU’s men collected their 20th win of the season on Saturday with a 75-55 romp over Missouri at the P-MAC. The Tigers close the season with a visit to 18th-ranked Arkansas on Wednesday, before the regular-season finale against number 24 Alabama on Saturday. It hasn’t been the smoothest path to 20 wins, but Will Wade isn’t complaining.

The New Orleans Pelicans have won two in a row coming out of the All-Star break. After beating the Western Conference-leading Suns on Friday, the Pels beat the Lakers by 28 on Sunday night. CJ McCollum led six players in double figures with 22 points, with Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas adding 19 each. Ingram said the key to the Pelicans’ success has started with its defense, which has been best in the league over these last two games.

New Orleans hosts Sacramento on Wednesday night at the Smoothie King Center.

The NFL has announced that the New Orleans Saints will be playing a game across the pond during the 2022-23 season. The date and opponent have yet to be announced, but the Saints will be playing in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It will be the third time the Black & Gold travels to the UK for a game. They are 2-0 in England all-time, beating the Chargers in 2008 and the Dolphins in 2017.

LSU climbed one spot to seventh in the D-1 baseball rankings after winning four straight this past weekend. Louisiana Tech lost 2 of 3 to Tulane, and the UL Ragin Cajuns dropped three in a row at the Round Rock Classic.
