Governor John Bel Edwards’s proposal to allocate 500-million dollars towards building a new I-10 Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge is facing some pushback from legislative leaders. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Sam Jenkins of Shreveport is one of them. He’s also concerned about using 550-million dollars in federal pandemic aid to help replenish the Unemployment insurance trust fund.

Cut 5 (06) “…different direction.”

The state’s trucking industry says they’re not happy with proposals of tolls to build a new I-10 bridge in Lake Charles. Executive Director of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association Renee Amar says that while members agree the Calcasieu Bridge is in dire need of replacement, not a single one is in favor of tolls to fund the project.

Cut 6 (12) “…deliver goods”

Amar says not only does a toll bridge place a burden on truckers, but the ultimate cost is passed on to taxpayers.

A new report says Saints executives and owner Gayle Benson met with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson for a second time on Wednesday night. Nick Underhill of New Orleans-dot-football says the meeting took place in Atlanta following Watson’s visit with the Falcons. Watson is in control, holding a no-trade clause, so the decision on his destination is his to make. ESPN reported that the Browns and Panthers have pulled out of negotiations, leaving the choice between the Saints and their most-hated rival. The 28-year-old QB has four years remaining on his contract and is due to make $35 million in 2022.

It’s been a long time coming, but LSU is once again hosting games in the NCAA women’s tournament after earning a top-16 seed for the first time in 14 years. All season, large crowds came out to support the Tigers, and Coach Kim Mulkey says that with all of the other things happening on and around campus this weekend, she still expects the P-Mac to be packed.

Games tonight in the women’s NIT…Tulane faces Jacksonville State and Louisiana Tech takes on Houston.

In college baseball, the U-L Ragin’ Cajuns topped McNeese 10-8 and Tulane knocked off Nicholls 5-3. The Cajuns weren’t as fortunate on the softball diamond, dropping a double-header to Texas. Nicholls lost to South Alabama, and McNeese routed Southern.

A report from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs recommends the closure of the Alexandria VA hospital. The report is the result of the 2018 Mission Act, which required an assessment of American vets current and future health care needs. Senator Bill Cassidy says the same law also requires a safety net for those the Alexandria VA facility would treat…:

Cut 4 (09)  “…their private doctor.”

The senator says the report is – at this time – just a report. No action has been taken and, and there’s no assurance the VA medical center in Pineville WILL close. He says the facility does have fairly low occupancy, but he still finds the sudden desire to close it (quote) “infuriating”…:

Cassidy is, by trade, a gastroenterologist, specializing in kidney ailments. He says closing the Alexandria VA hospital would be a mistake, but he also cannot help but look at the issue through a doctor’s eyes…:

Cassidy says the 2018 Mission Act dictates that, if vets can’t get care from a VA facility, they can get it from a private one.

The construction of a new Jimmie Davis Bridge, in Shreveport-Bossier, has taken a big step forward. Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Shawn Wilson says DOTD is preparing to accept bids on the project.

Cut 7 (12) “…$150 million bridge.”

The project is fully funded through a combination of federal dollars, state money, and a portion of the DOTD Highway Trust Fund. In order to speed up the process and control costs, Wilson says DOTD is utilizing the design-build method.

Cut 8 (13)  “…delivery model.”

While the new, four-lane bridge will be the connection between Bossier and Caddo parishes, Wilson believes the old bridge could be repurposed into a linear park linking existing bike and pedestrian trails on either side of the Red River.

A contractor should be chosen by late summer, with construction set to begin in early 2023.

She’s worried we’ll have another surge, and so her advice: “save your masks and consider getting the shots”…:

Monday marked the start of the NFL’s free agency period and the New Orleans Saints enter with a number of holes to fill, the biggest being starting quarterback. The Tigers face Iowa State on Friday night.

It’s a big week for the Tigers on the diamond as well. They host 10-6 Tulane at the Box tonight before opening SEC play this weekend with a three-game series against Texas A&M. LSU has won four in a row and is ranked 16th in the country by Baseball America. Tulane won the last meeting, 10-9, in April of 2018 and has taken five of six in a series that dates back to 1893.

The New Orleans Saints met with Deshaun Watson Monday night, as they try to make a deal for the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback and Tuesday they suffered their first major loss in free agency as safety Marcus Williams agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens. The team also restructured the deal of defensive lineman Marcus Davenport as the Saints work to get under the salary cap. So far, New Orleans is the only team in the league to not make a move in free agency.

Coach Dennis Allen has added three more members to his coaching staff, as the Saints announced the hiring of Bob Bicknell as a senior offensive assistant, Sterling Moore joins the defensive staff, and Matt Clapp is in as the team’s new strength coach.

Former LSU star Andrew Whitworth has decided to go out on top. After 16 seasons, four Pro Bowls, two All-Pro selections, and finally winning both the Walter Payton Man of the Year award and a Super Bowl championship this season, Whitworth is retiring from football. He spent 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the Rams for the last five.
