The magic had to end sometime, though LSU fans hoped it wouldn’t be this soon as the women’s basketball team were beaten by Ohio State, 64-79 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Khayla Pointer scored 32 points in her final game but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 20-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. LSU ends the season 26-6 after winning just nine games a season ago. Coach Kim Mulkey says this season, despite how it ended, was a tremendous success.

Cut 21 (13) “…just built it.”

The New Orleans Pelicans came up just short in their effort to finish their three-game road trip undefeated, falling to the Charlotte Hornets, 103-106 last night. Jonas Valanciunas posted 24 points and 18 boards, and CJ McCollum added 27 more, but the Pels were outscored 28-19 in the fourth quarter.

Louisiana Tech will have big shoes to fill with the departure of Eric Konkol. The third-winningest coach in Bulldogs history is moving on to Tulsa to lead the Golden Hurricanes.

Athletic Director Scott Woodward has named Matt McMahon as LSU’s new head men’s basketball coach. McMahon agreed to a seven-year, $20.3 million contract on Tuesday and was in Baton Rouge last night to watch LSU’s women at the P-MAC. In his previous seven seasons with Murray State, McMahon won four Ohio Valley Conference titles and made three NCAA tournament appearances. John Wright, sports editor at the Murray Ledger, says there’s a lot to like about McMahon.

Cut 13 (10) “…I believe.”

After missing out on targets like Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, the Saints have reunited with Jameis Winston, agreeing to a two-year, $28-million contract with the quarterback. WWL-TV Saints reporter Ralph Malbrough likes the deal.

Cut 16 (11) “…other solution.”

Malbrough says with Winston’s deal done, the Saints can now fill other holes on the roster.

A Louisiana public policy “think tank” is suing the U.S. Department of Defense on behalf of a Barksdale Airman who refuses to take the COVID vaccine. Pelican Institute Center for Justice attorney James Baehr (pronounced: BEAR) says Senior Airman Faith Crocker was denied a religious exemption she filed in good faith, and was told to get the shots or be discharged…:

Cut 4 (08)  “…should have to make.”

Airman Crocker is the daughter of a Baptist minister, and has deeply held beliefs about what to put in her body. She requested the right to say “no” to the shots. Baehr says the DoD has denied virtually ALL religious accommodation requests from military personnel in Louisiana and elsewhere. He says that hard-nosed policy is uncalled for, as the pandemic winds down…:

Cut 5 (09) “…no reason for this.”

Baehr says the lawsuit simply aims to block the DoD and the Air Force from dismissing Crocker for her conscientious objection to the shots. He says Crocker – and many others who requested a religious accommodation from the COVID shots – received their denial last month in a form letter. Baehr says that suggests the requests were never even considered…:

Cut 6 (08)  “…those requests en masse.”

River Ridge Senator and Chair of the Senate Judiciary C Committee Kirk Talbot is hoping to increase the penalties for the ever-growing crimes of carjacking and catalytic converter theft. Talbot says he’s working with law enforcement and district attorneys on the legislation and living in New Orleans he’s seen car jackings grow increasingly more violent.

Cut 7 (09) “…your face.”

In New Orleans, Monday afternoon police say an elderly woman was killed in a Mid-City carjacking when she was dragged for several blocks, and her arm was severed from her body.

Talbot’s legislation specifically highlighting catalytic converter theft, will make it more difficult for them to be resold, similar to legislation that addressed copper theft in which the seller’s identification has to be recorded during a sale.

Cut 8 (10)  “…definitely help.”

Talbot is hopeful his carjacking legislation will act as a deterrent and give the judicial system more leeway when punishing those who commit such violent crimes and also make it more difficult for suspects to post bond.

Just two days after the LSU men’s basketball team was eliminated from the NCAA tournament, athletic director Scott Woodward has found the man to lead the program forward. Matt McMahon has been the head coach at Murray State for the last seven years, leading the Racers to four conference titles and three NCAA tournament bids. John Wright, sports editor at the Murray Ledger, says there’s a lot to like about McMahon.

Cut 13 (10) “…I believe.”

Murray State ranked in the top 10 in offensive efficiency and in the top 20 defensively this past season, the type of balance necessary to win big. But job one will be trying to bring some players to Baton Rouge after what should be a massive exodus. Wright says McMahon is a talented recruiter with a template for what he wants in a student-athlete.

Cut 14 (13)  “…into the system.”

McMahon has been highly sought after, with his name connected to just about every Power 5 job opening this offseason. Wright says that’s with good reason, and the fan base should embrace him pretty quickly.

Cut 15 (11)  “…to have him.”

Malbrough says that along with the talent the Saints keep in-house with the deal to retain the former top overall pick, the team also made a smart financial decision.

Cut 17 (18) “ …piece of business.”

With Winston taking up a much smaller portion of the salary cap than a lot of starters in the NFL, the Saints can turn their attention to other areas of concern on the roster, something they couldn’t do a week ago.

The LSU women’s basketball team will try to advance to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 for the first time in eight years when they host Ohio State tonight. Following their escape against Jackson State, the Tigers get another big test in the Big Ten champs and their leading scorer Jacy Sheldon. Sheldon is averaging 20 points per game this season and scored 25 in OSU’s win over Missouri State. LSU’s Ryann Payne talked about trying to slow Sheldon down.

Cut 17 (19) “…three balls too.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at the P-MAC.

Scott Woodward didn’t wait long…just two days after the men’s basketball team’s season ended in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, it looks like Woodward has chosen former Murray State coach Matt McMahon to lead the Tigers. In seven seasons at Murray State, McMahon compiled a 154-67 record and four regular-season Ohio Valley Conference championships.

Northwestern State has found the successor for Mike McConathy, who stepped down last week after 23 seasons at the helm. Missouri State associate head coach Corey Gipson was named the 10th head coach of the Demons on Monday afternoon. Gipson has spent the past six seasons with Missouri State, with stints at Austin Peay and UNC-Greensboro before that.

The New Orleans Pelicans will be looking to close out a 3-0 road trip when they visit the Charlotte Hornets this evening. The Pels topped Atlanta Sunday night, 117-112, and moved into sole possession of ninth in the Western Conference standings with 11 games left to play in the regular season.

After being spurned by Deshaun Watson, the Saints have reunited with Jameis Winston, agreeing to a two-year, $28-million contract according to several reports. Last season Winston went 5-2 as a starter for the Who Dats, throwing 14 touchdown passes with just three picks before tearing his ACL last Halloween against the Tampa Bay Bucs.

The quarterback carousel continues to spin around the rest of the NFL with longtime Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan heading to Indianapolis to join the Colts in a trade. Atlanta followed that move by signing former Titans and Raiders signal-caller Marcus Mariota.

And…Tuesday’s baseball game between LSU and Louisiana Tech has been postponed due to the threat of severe weather.

The House Transportation Committee has approved legislation once again to ban hand-held cell phones while driving. Last year the House passed Breaux Bridge Representative Mike Huval’s ban, but it failed to get out of the Senate by just a single vote. Cut 4 (12) “…driving crashes.”

You’ll want to make sure you’re able to receive weather alerts as a major system will move into Louisiana later tonight. State Climatologist Barry Keim says much of the state is already under a flash flood watch with this system that could drop several inches of rain in a short time, so be prepared for a bumpy ride over the next day.

Cut 11 (09) “…heavy rainfall.”

The MJ Foster Promise Program is now online…providing $10.5 million annually for financial support for students to earn credentials that can help them gain employment in high-demand jobs in Louisiana’s growing industry sectors. After a narrow escape of Jackson State in the first round, the LSU women’s basketball team can advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014 by beating Ohio State tonight in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes are 24-and-6 and as Coach Kim Mulkey points out, O-S-U won a share of the Big 10 regular-season conference championship….

Cut 16 (16) “…so quick.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at the P-MAC.

The search for LSU’s next men’s coach may be heating up with multiple reports indicating that Murray State’s Matt McMahon could be atop Scott Woodward’s list to replace Will Wade. Murray State was eliminated in the second round by tournament darling Saint Peter’s on Saturday and finished the season with a 31-3 record. Over seven seasons, McMahon has a career record of 154-67 and has led Murray State to four Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championships in the past five seasons.

LSU baseball didn’t get off to the best start in SEC play, dropping its first two games to Texas A&M before stealing a 7-6 win on Sunday to avoid a sweep. Discipline at the plate and in the field were big issues, but Coach Jay Johnson liked how his team battled back in the finale…

Cut 20 (17) “…that stuff.”

The New Orleans Pelicans find themselves in ninth in the Western Conference standings after picking up a 117-112 road win over the Atlanta Hawks. Jonas Valanciunas led six Pels in double figures with 26 points and 12 rebounds. CJ McCollum added 25 points and eight assists. New Orleans holds the tie-breaker over the Los Angeles Lakers with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Their three-game road trip ends tonight in Charlotte against the Hornets. Charlotte has won four in a row and six of its last eight ball games.

The Pelicans also announced that Zion Williamson will not play this season, and instead will focus on being fully ready for the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

Production costs for farmers in the Bayou State could go up as much as 40-percent this year, depending on the crop. LSU AgCenter Economist Mike Deliberto, says the market volatility is due to a number of issues, like supply chain disruptions and the availability of herbicides…

Cut 3 (09) “…fuel markets.”

He says both of those markets follow the price of crude oil and natural gas.

And while the Russian invasion of Ukraine is impacting consumers at the gas pump, Deliberto says farmers are also facing sticker shock and the expenditure of fertilizer makes up a large portion of their expenses which is being affected by trade sanctions.

Cut 4 (10) “…will us.”

And as consumers are paying higher prices for groceries, Deliberto says only 12-cents from every dollar on retail food sales comes back to the individual farmer and the increase at the grocery store is paying for transportation, advertising, and marketing.

Cut 5 (08) “…store shelves.”

As for Louisiana farmers, Deliberto is hopeful higher commodity prices and sound marketing strategies will help offset the price increases of fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides.

With the start of LSU’s first-round matchup against Jackson State less than 24 hours away, the status of guard Alexis Morris is still in question. She’s missed the Tigers’ last three games after being injured early in LSU’s 58-50 win over Alabama on February 24. Morris, who averaged 16 points per game this season, is back at practice and Kim Mulkey says there’s still time before a decision has to be made.

Cut 9 (12) “…she’ll play.”

LSU will be taking on SWAC champion Jackson State. The “other” Tigers come to Baton Rouge riding a 21-game winning streak. Mulkey saw JSU up close and personal last season, beating the Tigers in the opening round while still at Baylor. She knows better than to take the 15th-seed lightly.

Cut 10 (11)  “…grabs your attention.”

The Tigers haven’t played in nearly 15 days, their longest layoff of the season. Rest versus rust is always a debate, though Kim Mulkey isn’t going to participate.

Cut 4 (15)  “…serious side effects.”

Firment’s House Bill 570 would prohibit a whole group of medical procedures for anyone under 18, IF the service is part of a gender transition. Firment says there are already numerous cases of young people who had that done and then regretted their decision. He says science & medical experts are in the process of changing their position on gender reassignment procedures…:

Cut 5 (15) “…children under 18.”

Firment says there is little evidence of improved psychiatric outcomes after a person has had transgender surgery, so he thinks Louisiana should take steps to assure that minors don’t make a decision they may regret…:

Firment says there are also serious medical risks from these procedures, so these decisions should be left up to adults.

The entire Who Dat Nation remains on pins and needles as they await word on whether or not the Saints have acquired Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Social media has been buzzing with speculation and rumors since Watson completed his visits with his prospective new teams. Nick Underhill of New Orleans-dot-Football says Saints officials and owner Gayle Benson made a final pitch in Atlanta on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, free-agent running back Ty Montgomery is signing with the New England Patriots after spending the last two seasons in New Orleans.

LSU women’s basketball guard Khayla Pointer continues to add to her trophy collection. The fifth-year senior has been selected as a second-team All-American after averaging 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, and just over five assists per game so far this season, setting career-highs in each category. Pointer was named first-team All-SEC last week and earlier this year became the first player in LSU men’s or women’s basketball history to total at least 15-hundred points, 500 assists, and 500 rebounds in a career. Next, she’ll lead the Tigers into their opening-round matchup with Jackson State, Saturday at 4 pm in the P-MAC.
