There are five NFL teams searching for a new head coach and Saints analyst Nick Underhill believes all five of them have contacted former Saints coach Sean Payton. Of the five, the Saints have allowed the Broncos, Cardinals, and Texans to meet with Payton. The NFL is not allowing any interviews until the 17th,  Payton’s first interview has been scheduled with the Broncos for next Tuesday. New Orleans still owns the rights to Payton’s contract, meaning if he were to seek a new team, the Saints have said they’d require at least first-round pick compensation.

ULM hosts the Ragin’ Cajuns tonight as both teams look for a crucial Sun-Belt win. The 12-4 Cajuns were preseason favorites to win the conference but lost their first two Sun-Belt games on the road before bouncing back to win their last two. ULL coach Bob Marlin wants to keep his team’s momentum

The 2022 college football season has officially come to a close after Georgia’s 65-7 national championship victory over TCU. The final AP Poll of the 2022 season was released, and LSU finished ranked 16th in the nation. Tulane moved up 5 spots to finish their season ranked 9th overall.

The Saints season is officially over, and players will be watching the playoffs at home this year after a 7-10 season. The Saints miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season and have their first losing season since 2016. New Orleans lost their 10th overall pick in this year’s draft in a trade to the Eagles, but Head Coach Dennis Allen says the team is looking to get back to contending next year…

The Pelicans snapped a two-game losing streak last night in a 132-112 win over the Wizards. After a tight first quarter, New Orleans pulled away in the second, outscoring the Wizards 33-19. The Pels were still without stars Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson, but guard CJ McCollum led the team with 34 points. The win marks the first time the Pelicans have won in Washington D.C. since 2011. New Orleans returns to action tomorrow night in Boston against the league-leading Celtics.

All NFL teams will be preparing for the final week of the regular season with heavy hearts as their thoughts and prayers remain with Bills Safety Damar Hamlin. Doctors announced earlier today Hamlin is still in critical condition but has made substantial improvements. He has no signs of neurological damage and is now awake and able to communicate through writing. Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen says that the team is taking all necessary steps to ensure the players’ mental health…

Natchitoches Central High School announced the hiring of Jess Curtis as the Chiefs’ new football coach. Curtis led Many High School to three small school state championships in the last nine seasons. Since taking over in 2010, he’s had a 163-24 record and made the playoffs every year. Curtis takes over a Chiefs team who went 3-7 last season.

LSU Women’s Basketball will look to match their best start in program history tonight against Texas A&M. the seventh-ranked Lady Tigers are 14-0 and could match their best start to the season ever with a win in the P-MAC tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00.

ULM men’s basketball returns home tonight after starting Sun-Belt play with two road wins last week. Tonight, they’ll host Georgia State, who’s 1-1 in the conference and coming off a win over South Alabama. Warhawks Coach Keith Richards says the panthers are a tough team…

The Cajuns were preseason favorites to win the conference and started out the season 10-2 but have lost their last two conference games. They’ll look to bounce back against a 13-2 Golden Eagles team who’s undefeated in the Sun-Belt.

The Tigers Citrus Bowl matchup against Purdue wasn’t much of a contest as LSU trounced the short-handed Purdue team without their head coach and starting Quarterback. The Tigers’ offense had nearly 600 yards en route to a 63-7 victory. Sophomore wide receiver Malik Nabers had nine catches for 163 yards and a touchdown and one passing touchdown on a trick play to quarterback Jayden Daniels…

The LSU Men’s Basketball team will return to action tonight at Kentucky in their second SEC contest of the season. Many didn’t know what to think of new Head Coach Matt McMahon’s rebuilt squad, but the Tigers have started the season 12-1 and opened SEC play last week with a home win over ninth-ranked Arkansas. Tip-off in Lexington is tonight at 7:00.

Tulane pulled off a shocking 46-45 Cotton Bowl upset over USC. The Green Wave finishes the season with a 12-2 record giving the program the best single-season turnaround in FBS history after a two-win season last year. Down 15 with 4 and a half minutes left, Tulane put together a two-play touchdown drive, caused a safety after a muffed kickoff, and led a three-minute game-winning touchdown drive capped off with a  touchdown reception by Alex Bauman. The pass was originally ruled an incompletion before the call was reversed. Bauman said he knew it was a catch all-along…

The Buffalo Bills released a statement earlier today saying safety Demar Hamlin is in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during last night’s Monday Night Football game. Hamlin received CPR on the field before being rushed to UC Medical Center for further treatment. The NFL suspended the game indefinitely and has announced there are no plans to play the game this week.

The Pelicans came out with a nail biting 119-118 win over the Timberwolves last night behind a career-high 43 point performance from Zion Williamson. Down five with just under 3 minutes left, Williamson took over, scoring the Pels last 14 straight to close out the game. New Orleans has now won their last four straight and move back into first in the Western Conference. Williamson, who has embraced the city ever since being drafted in 2019, thinks it’s time for a new era in New Orleans sports…

LSU kicked off conference play with a bang upsetting ninth-ranked Arkansas 60-57 in the P-MAC last night. Guard Trae Hannibal led the Tigers provided a spark with 19 points off the bench and forward Derek Fountain had a 14-point double-double. LSU Wide Receiver Kayshon Boutte announced yesterday he will enter the 2023 NFL Draft. The Preseason All-American and first round prospect earlier said he’d return to the team in 2023, but plans unexpectedly changed less than a week before the Citrus Bowl. The Tigers will now look to sophomore Malik Nabers to step into the leading role in the Tigers offense. Nabers led the team in receptions and yards this year and will look to continue his success with quarterback Jayden Daniels next season.

The Saints will fight to keep their slim playoff chances alive this weekend as they travel to Philadelphia to face the NFL-leading Eagles. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts missed last week with a shoulder injury but is questionable to return this week as they look to clinch the number-one seed in the NFC. One player the Eagles will for sure be without is safety CJ Gardner-Johnson who the Saints traded to Philly earlier this year. Gardner-Johnson has been on IR since week 12 but still leads the league in interceptions. Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen says he doesn’t regret the decision…

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels announced he will be returning to LSU for his redshirt senior season last week. Daniels transferred from Arizona St. last year and led the Tigers to an SEC West Championship in his first season. After throwing for over 2700 yards and running for more than 8oo more, Daniels solidified himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC. Tiger Rag assistant editor William Weathers believes that Daniels’ return could mean big things for the Bayou Bengals in 2023.

First the Tigers will have to get past Purdue in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando January 2nd . The 8-5 Boilermakers will be without their head coach Jeff Brohm and starting quarterback Aiden O’Connel  for the matchup, making LSU 14.5 point favorites. Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Brian Broahm has been named the interim head coach, and former Saints quarterback Drew Brees has joined his Alma Mater as an assistant coach for the bowl game. The Tigers will also be missing a few key players. Most notably, BJ Ojulari, Ali Gaye, and Jaqueline Roy have all opted out of the bowl, leaving Mekhi Wingo as the only remaining starting defensive lineman.. Kickoff Monday is at noon.

The Pelicans showed off their depth last night in a 113-93 win over the Pacers. The win came without leading scorers Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, second year players Herb Jones and Trey Murphy, and rookie guard Dyson Daniels. Even without the key pieces, the Pels were still able to put together a dominant performance, taking the lead with 1:25 left in the first and holding on for the rest of the game. Forward Naji Marshall led the team with 22 points and 4 other Pelicans reached double digits. The win propels New Orleans past the Grizzlies and into second in the west half a game behind the Nuggets. Williamson, Murphy, and Daniels returned to practice today and have all been listed as probable for  tomorrow’s game against the Timberwolves. 

The LSU Men’s Basketball team is 11-1 on the season but preparing for their biggest challenge yet as they begin conference play in the P-MAC against Arkansas tomorrow night. The ninth-ranked Razorbacks share an 11-1 record with the Tigers but boast a win over No. 17 San Diego St, and their single loss came at the hands of tenth-ranked Creighton. The Arizona St. transfer helped lead the Tigers to an SEC West Championship with over 3,500 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns on only 3 interceptions in his first season at LSU. Daniels and Coach Brian Kelly will look to build on their hot starts next season, but first the Tigers have an upcoming date with Purdue in the Citrus Bowl. LSU signed 25 recruits on the first day of the early signing period yesterday. The Tigers boast the 6th ranked recruiting class in the nation and are one of three finalists to land 5-star cornerback Desmond Ricks. Ricks makes his decision today at 5:30

The Pelicans will host the Spurs tonight as they hope to get out of their 4 game skid. After winning 7 in a row to become the number one team in the West, the Pels have lost their last 4 straight. They’ll look to bounce back against a struggling San Antonio team, but they’ll be without their leading scorers. Zion Williamson was placed in NBA health and safety protocols, and Coach Willie Green announced Wednesday Brandon Ingram’s return won’t be until next week at the earliest. The LSU Men’s Basketball team won a close game against East Tennessee in the P-MAC last night. KJ Williams had an impressive 28-point 12-rebound Double-double, and  the 72-68 victory makes the Tigers 10-1 on the season as they prepare to begin SEC play next week. The men’s 10-1 record and the women’s undefeated 12-0 record give LSU the best combined basketball record in the country at 22-1 ahead of the Christmas break.

UL-Lafayette suffered a 100-72 loss in Austin last night to seventh-ranked Texas. The Cajuns still sit atop the Sun-Belt at 10-2 and will return to action next Thursday against Coastal Carolina.

Purdue has added a familiar face to its coaching staff in the wake of Head Coach Jeff Brohm’s departure. Purdue alumn and former Saints quarterback Drew Brees is set to take an interim assistant coaching job with the Boilermakers ahead of their Citrus Bowl matchup with the Tigers. Starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell has announced he will be skipping the bowl game and senior cornerback Cory Trice has opted out to declare for the 2023 NFL draft.

The Pelicans will look to bounce back from a sloppy performance in Utah Tuesday that put an end to their seven-game win streak. New Orleans shot just 40% from the floor and made 4 of 27 from three en route to a 121-100 loss. They’ll play the Jazz again tonight as they hope to separate themselves in the West. The Pels are currently tied with Memphis for first in the Western conference at 18-9, and will hope to regain some momentum behind all-star forward Zion Williamson. Jose Alvarado has been listed as out for tonight’s matchup and Brandon Ingram is set to miss his ninth straight game. Tip-off tonight is at 8:00

Angel Reese scored a career high 32 points on 13-15 shooting in LSU’s 88-42 win over Lamar last night. Her 15 rebounds secured her her tenth double-double of the season. She is the first LSU player with 10 consecutive double-doubles to start the season since Sylvia Fowles had 19 straight in the 2006-2007 season. 

The Ragin’ Cajuns will head to Lake Charles tonight to face McNeese as the I-10 rivals have their 98th meeting. UL-Lafayette is 9-1 through their first ten games, the best start to a season since 1990-91. Tip-off in the Legacy Center is tonight at 7:00

Mississippi State Head Coach Mike Leach passed away last night at the age of 61 after suffering complications with a heart condition. Leach has coached the Bulldogs since 2020 and was one of the most influential minds in college football with his “Air Raid” offense. LSU Coach Brian Kelly gave his condolences to Leach’s family and mourned the loss of “the most transformational mind in football in my generation and the best press conferences you will ever google.”  One of Leach’s most popular press conferences is one of him detailing the catch twenty-two of getting married…

The Pels return to action tonight as they look to extend their win streak to 8. They kick off their three-game road trip with an 8:00 tip-off tonight in Utah before playing the Jazz again Thursday and the Suns Saturday.

Northwestern State guard Ja’Monta Black has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week. The senior Missouri state transfer receives the honor after a career-high 31-point performance against ULM last Saturday. Black matched his career high 7 three-pointers in the 91-73 win helping to extend the Demons’ win streak to seven. Northwestern State will return to action Saturday when they travel to Houston to face Rice.

UL-Lafayette dominated Louisiana Christian last night with a 98-63 win in the Cajundome. The Cajuns opened with a 20-4 run and never looked back in the wire-to-wire win. Jordan Brown scored a career-high 37 points and Themus Fulks posted his first double-double with 12 points and 11 assists. The Cajuns improve to 9-1 on the season and will visit McNeese Thursday.

LSU hosted Ohio tight end Jackson McGohan for an official visit this weekend. The three-star recruit announced his commitment to LSU yesterday. McGohan becomes the second 2023 tight end commitment as LSU looks to reload at the position around freshman Mason Taylor.
