New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has reconsidered her trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a World Mayors Conference. Her Honor says she will not fly to South America, but will instead attend virtually. Cantrell has been ordered to repay the city the cost of upgrading plane fares for three trips abroad in the past four months to first class. She is also under an active recall petition.

Police in Shreveport say man kidnapped two small children, shot them both and then turned the gun on himself. The victims were both toddlers. Shreveport PD’s Sgt. Chris Bordelon says investigators have been piecing together what led to the tragedy…:

Some kind of domestic dispute started it all. Bordelon says the identities of those involved are being withheld for now.

Ever share your Netflix password with a friend? The TV streamer will start cracking down on that by tracking IP addresses and hitting those that violate terms of use with a penalty. “Tech Gumbo” radio show host Haggai Davis…:

More federal bucks coming to Louisiana, which will mean new jobs. Vidalia’s Syrah Technologies will get about $220-million to manufacture electric vehicle batteries for Tesla. Senator Bill Cassidy says the money will help Louisiana build an economy for 2050, not just 2023…:

$100-million will flow to Kloura chemical in St. Gabriel, in Iberville Parish, will be the first U.S. manufacturing plant for lithium hexafluorophosphate; a battery component.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a murder suicide Tuesday morning in Mandeville. Officers say 43-year-old Tara Brook called 9-1-1 and told them she’d just shot her daughter and was about to shoot herself. They then heard a gunshot. Responding officers found Brooks and the daughter, 23-year-old Brittany Buras, dead.

Tragedy in Shreveport last night. Police say a man killed two young children and then himself in west Shreveport. Public information officer Sgt. Chris Bordelon:

Bordelon says the man took the children from a mobile home park on Pines Road to a public park and shot them there. He says the infant was found dead at the scene and the older child died later at a hospital. Police say the children were kidnapped.

Police say before the children were taken the suspect got into a fight with the children’s mother.

Details on the victims’ identities and other information surrounding the abduction have not been released.

Netflix announces it’s about to start cracking down on password sharing next year. Host of Tech Gumbo Haggai Davis says for example if you’re a parent and your children live out of state or even out of town and are on your Netflix account expect to pay more.

And for example, if your friend shares their password with you, Davis says Netflix will know that your IP address which is also the billing address, is not associated with your friend’s IP address.

Davis says an issue Netflix will have to address is if you have an account and you use it on your phone, tablet, or even log in at the office on your lunch hour will you be forced to pay extra for a subaccount?

Davis says Netflix has been testing their password credentials in South America and they are expected to roll out in the US next year.

Governor John Bel Edwards is urging every Louisianan with student debt to apply for the federal government’s student loan debt relief program before the end-of-the-year deadline.  University of Louisiana System President Dr. Jim Henderson…

Cut 9 (09)  “…debt forgiveness”

Henderson says Louisiana’s debt load is lower than other states because of the TOPS scholarship program. Individuals who make less than $125,000 per year or married couples who make less than $250,000 per year are eligible for up to $10,000 in forgiveness. Borrowers who meet those requirements plus went to school with Pell Grants—loans for income students—are eligible for up to $20,000 dollars in forgiveness.

He says the relief is especially needed by people who were not able to complete their degrees.

The Biden administration has tightened requirements for debt forgiveness. The US Department of Education now says borrowers with privately held federal student loans can’t apply for the relief. To be forgiven, the loans have to come from the Department of Education.  Henderson says the changes make sense

320-million in federal dollars is heading to Louisiana to bolster U-S battery manufacturing. 219-million dollars will go to Syrah Technologies in Vidalia which makes battery components for electric vehicles and another 100-million dollars will go to a chemical plant in St. Gabriel. Senator Bill Cassidy says the funding is the result of the federal infrastructure bill

Work has begun in Kenner on converting the 30-year-old Treasure Chest riverboat casino on Lake Ponchartrain into a land-based operation. The $100-million project is expected to be ready to open in 2024. In the meantime the riverboat will remain open.

A new political TV ad in the Shreveport mayoral race uses Deep Fake technology to place the incumbent in the principal’s office; getting a failing grade. The person in the ads looks like Mayor Adrian Perkins and sounds like him, but is NOT him. “LAPolitics.com” publisher Jeremy Alford says it was paid for by an anti-Perkins political action committee…:

He expects to see more such Deep Fake politicals as statewide races for 2023 heat up.

Expect a freeze tonight in north Louisiana. It’s happened this early in the season before; in 1948 and agin in 1989. State Climatologist Barry Keim says warmer weather will follow closely behind though…:

The first group of juvenile inmates from the Bridge City Center for Youth in Jefferson Parish has been moved to Angola state prison. A bus carrying around ten juveniles was seen on the interstate before 6 this morning. More inmates will be moved in and kept in facilities separate from the adult population.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Louisiana today is $3.39. But according to Louisiana AAA, it’s a good news – bad news scenario….:

Experts say we’ve entered a new era in political ads, thanks to an ad running in the Shreveport mayor’s race…and it may have implications far beyond…:

The state legislative panel looking at medical marijuana laws met this morning. The committee discussed employee protections for those who use medical marijuana, as well as potential ways drug testing policies could impact workers. The group is talking over ways to fine tune state laws to make them work best for all involved.

 

Gasoline prices took a small dip. The statewide average price for regular gas is now $3.39. Louisiana AAA fuel analyst Don Redman…:

As for gas prices for the holiday travel season, because surveys indicate more people plan to cut back on their travel budget, Redman says budget from $3 to $3.25 a gallon for gas through New Years.

It got chilly last night, but tonight it will get downright COLD. State Climatologist Barry Keim says this will be the season’s first freeze for most of north Louisiana…:

The first cold snap of the season is here. State Climatologist Barry Keim predicts the northern half of the state will see the season’s first freeze tomorrow morning. He says expect lows tonight in the thirties across almost everywhere except New Orleans and the coast. Keim’s is still concerned with drought, though. He says the little bit of rain we had last week didn’t help…:

Temperatures are falling and so are gasoline prices…but just a small amount. The statewide average cost of regular gas is $3.39 today. Louisiana AAA’s Don Redman says that’s because oil has dipped to $82 a barrel; about ten bucks less than two weeks ago. He says gasoline prices may be lower than expected in the winter weeks ahead because of that…:

A new television ad in the Shreveport mayoral race could start a new trend in campaign ads in Louisiana. It’s produced by the People over Politics Political Action Committee and the main character in the spot is a person who looks and sounds like Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins, being called into the principal’s office. But so-called deep fake technology was used to create a character that looks just like Perkins. “LAPolitics.com” publisher Jeremy Alford believes this is the first time that such technology has been used in a political ad in Louisiana…but it won’t be the last…:

The Police Chief in Plaquemine says he will resign, hoping to avoid possible criminal charges for alleged malfeasance. Chief Kenny Payne is accused of soliciting sex from a woman in order to get charges against her boyfriend dropped. Payne maintains he did nothing wrong.

 

Alexandria Police are seeking the suspect in a fatal hit & run Saturday morning. Alexandria Police spokesman Lane Windham says 40-year-old Don Lair, Jr. was struck as he walked across a street at about 3:30 AM Saturday. The driver that hit Lair sped away from the scene.  Lair was hit by a second car, but that driver stopped and called 9-1-1. Windham says cops got a partial description of the vehicle..:

He asks the driver to turn his or herself in as soon as possible.

Alexandria Police are seeking the suspect in a fatal hit & run Saturday morning. . Alexandria Police spokesman Lane Windham says 40-year-old Don Lair, Jr. was struck as he walked across a street at about 3:30 AM Saturday…:

The vehicle that initially hit Lair was a white or silver minivan or smaller SUV. APD asks that driver to turn him or herself in, or for anyone with information on Lair’s death to contact them.

Believe it or not, parts of Louisiana could get down to near freezing tomorrow night. Jason Hansford, with the National Weather Service in Shreveport, says tonight will be pretty chilly, but Tuesday into Wednesday…look out…:

DeRidder resident and insurance professional Tim Temple ran against Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon in 2019, and got 47-percent of the vote. He says he will challenge Donelon again a year from now. Temple says insurers are leaving the state and premiums for residents just get higher and higher…:

Temple says, if elected he’d work to create a more business-friendly environment for insurance companies, and more transparency in the Department of Insurance.

New Orleans’ globe-trotting mayor, LaToya Cantrell, will be leaving the country again soon. She just returned from a trip to Amsterdam, and will soon be off to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a World Mayors Summit. Cantrell’s first class travel upgrades have been subject of much scrutiny, and a recent ruling that she has to reimburse the city for anything more costly than coach. Meanwhile the petition to recall Cantrell continues to gain names.

Police in Bogalusa say three teens who opened fire on one another outside the Bogalusa High Homecoming game Friday night exchanged about 20 shots. They say spent shell casings tell the tale. One boy – a 15-year-old – was killed. Police are seeking the other two.

 

A strong cold front is moving through Louisiana and the cooldown is already beginning in north Louisiana. Jason Hansford with the National Weather Service in Shreveport expects temperatures along I-20 to be 15 to 20 degrees below normal tonight, with the possibility of a freeze early Wednesday in North Louisiana…and near freezing temperature further south…:

Foundation Gaming of Mississippi is working to reopen Diamond Jack’s Casino in Bossier City. The state Gaming Control Board will consider the application by P2P to sell the license to Foundation in December. Board Chairman Ronnie Johns says, if all goes well it would still be some time before the new owner could rebuild, renovate and reopen…:
