The money comes from the 277-million dollar Broadband Infrastructure Program and there are an estimated 22-thousand households in rural Acadiana that lack high-speed internet.

It didn’t take long for LSU athletics director Scott Woodward to find a new men’s basketball coach. Matt McMahon has agreed to take over a program that could get hit with several NCAA penalties for recruiting violations that allegedly took place with former coach Will Wade. Strong storms are moving through Louisiana this morning. Several roads are underwater in northwest Louisiana. Alexandria is set to see some heavy rain and there’s a tornado watch until 2 this afternoon that stretches from Oak Grove to Lake Charles and the watch box also includes Lafayette.

Yesterday afternoon in New Orleans police say an elderly woman was killed in a Mid-City carjacking when she was dragged for several blocks, and her arm was severed from her body.

An LSU women’s basketball team that grabbed the attention of the whole state had its season end last night as the Lady Tigers fell to Ohio State 79-64 in the second round fo the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball program has a new head coach as Matt McMahon takes over after leading Murray State for seven successful seasons. A tornado watch is in effect until two o’clock PM, The watch box extends from Oak Grove to Lake Charles and it also covers Alexandria, Leesville, and Lafayette. The Shreveport-Bossier area is reporting several road closures because of high water.

At the state capitol today, a Senate committee will discuss a bill that would create the crime of theft of a catalytic converter. Thieves are stealing catalytic converters because they contain precious metals that have risen in price. River Ridge Senator Kirk Talbot says the legislation is similar to the one that addresses copper theft in which the seller’s identification has to be recorded during a sale…

Ohio State was the better team last night ending the season for the LSU Lady Tigers as Buckeyes won 79-64 to advance to the Sweet 16. Khayla Pointer had 32 points for the Lady Tigers in her final home game. But as a team, LSU shot 37-percent from the field, while Ohio State shot 48-percent and made ten three-pointers. LSU’s season ends with a record of 26-6.

Watching the game inside the PMAC was LSU’s new men’s basketball coach. Pete McMahon has been hired to replace Will Wade after a successful seven-year run at Murray State. John Wright covered McMahon for the Murray Ledger in Kentucky and he expects Tiger nation will embrace him quickly….

Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick worked out in New Orleans yesterday as he still hopes to land with an NFL team.

The Pelicans were outscored 28-19 in the fourth quarter last night and lost to the Charlotte Bobcats 106-103.

A strong storm system that spawned several tornadoes across central Texas is making its way towards Louisiana. Heavy rainfall has already fallen across northwest Louisiana, flooding streets. The greatest chance for severe weather stretches from Lake Charles to Alexandria, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and Ferriday.

River Ridge Senator Kirk Talbot is hoping his legislation to increase the penalties on carjackings and catalytic converter theft will discourage the crimes. Brooke Thorington has more.

A worker at Cat’s Meow Karaoke Bar on Bourbon Street was fatally shot early Sunday morning. New Orleans Police say the victim was hit by a stray bullet. Authorities have arrested the suspected shooter, 24-year-old Daphney Jackson and he’s been charged with manslaughter.

43-year-old Matt McMahon has reportedly emerged as the front runner to be the next men’s basketball head coach at LSU. McMahon has been the head coach at Murray State for seven seasons and he’s led the Racers to the NCAA Tournament three times.

The Pelicans defeated Atlanta 117 to 112 last night to move into a ninth place tie with the Lakers in the Western Conference standings. New Orleans is at Charlotte tonight.

Former LSU golfer Sam Burns won the Valspar Championship in Florida and is now ranked as the tenth best golfer in the world.

Louisiana could experience a substantial severe weather event tomorrow that would include tornadoes, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. Hammond, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and areas east of Alexandria are under a moderate risk for severe weather.

A House committee, will once again this year, consider a bill to enact a complete ban on using a handheld cellphone while behind the wheel. Breaux Bridge Republican Representative Mike Huval is the sponsor, and says it would apply to making HANDHELD calls only…:

Huval’s bill expands on the existing ban on using a handheld cellphone in a school zone to include ANY public highway. Fines would bet set at $100 maximum for a first offense; $300 for a second. Offenders could opt for community service. Further offenses could mean license suspension. Huval says all that can be avoided by just learning to use Bluetooth technology…:

Huval is bringing the bill again this year after it failed final passage by a very slim margin last year…:

Fifty students from the Southern University Law Center made the trip to Washington DC to watch the start of Senate Confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. Jackson would be the first Black woman to join the nation’s highest court, and third-year law-student Quiana-Joy (Key-ana) Ochiagha (Oh-chi-aga) is ready to witness history.

Ochiagha, who will graduate this May, believes a needed perspective has been missing from the justice system for too long, with Black women making up less than two percent of federal judges in U-S history. She sees Jackson’s potential confirmation as a starting point for greater inclusion moving forward.

The students made the trip knowing they might not have the opportunity to meet Judge Jackson, but Christopher Jordan is honored to be able to lend his support in any way that he can, even if it is from a distance.

The institute will also conduct studies and research on the Pennington campus in order to further the understanding of obesity and provide better treatments. 9% of the United States population are considered severely obese and Schauer says that if this were to go untreated it would result in further medical complications…

While patients usually get into the center through referrals from physicians they can also get there directly. Schauer says one of the major challenges is insurance coverage…
