The Louisiana House Transportation Committee is set to discuss legislation today that will allocate state dollars to build a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. Lake Charles Representative Philip Tarver says this long-discussed highway improvement project is close to becoming a reality…

Tarver says getting the financing in place is an obstacle that can be overcome thanks to federal infrastructure dollars and state surplus money.

The Biden Administration is launching a $500-million grant program aimed at making schools and school buses cleaner for kids and the environment. EPA Administrator Michael Regan (REE-gun) says the money comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed last year…:

Regan says public school districts spend about eight billion dollars a year on energy bills and this grant money can help schools make energy efficiency improvements.

A toddler drowned in north Caddo Parish on Monday morning. Caddo Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson Bia Rolden says the two-year-old’s mother found the little boy in Black Bayou Lake in the Hosston community after realizing the child had wandered away from his house. Roland says Youth Services detectives and crime scene investigators are trying to determine what happened.

History was made in the Ceasars Superdome last night as the Kansas Jayhawks won their first national championship since 2008 and fourth overall. The Jayhawks overcame a 16-point deficit to beat eighth-seeded North Carolina 72-69. It’s the largest comeback in NCAA mens’ basketball championship history.

The Saints now have two first-round picks in this year’s NFL draft. New Orleans made a trade with the Eagles where multiple draft picks were swapped between the two franchises. A bill to allow for your pet’s remains to be buried with you will be heard in House Commerce today. Minden Representative Wayne McMahen, who is a retired veterinarian says the nexus of his bill is to make it not illegal to bury a pet in a human cemetery.

As millions of dollars are being allocated for infrastructure projects throughout the state, Lake Charles Representative Phillip Tarver wants to make sure the Calcasieu River Bridge project isn’t forgotten. At the Capitol today, House Transportation will consider HB 761, which would set aside state money for the project over the next six years.

All of southeast Louisiana, part of Acadiana, and central Louisiana are under a tornado watch until 11 o’clock this morning. Louisiana will see another round of severe weather tonight and during the overnight hours. Meteorologist John Wetherbee says strong storms will move into the Shreveport area after 7 PM and then the storms will work their way across the state during the night

The entire I-20 corridor, Alexandria, and areas north of Hammond are all under an enhanced threat of severe weather. Wetherbee says residents in these areas will need to weather alert…

Wetherbee says there’s only a slight risk for flash flooding and the heaviest rainfall is expected to take place along the I-20 corridor. He says the severe storms could move through your area in the middle of the night, which is a problem…

State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in St. John the Baptist Parish after sheriff’s deputies responded to a partially submerged vehicle Sunday morning near Interstate-10 and US-51 in Laplace. Trooper Kate Stegall says two men were in the vehicle that traveled off the roadway into the marsh area.

The passenger is 20-year-old Jacoby Williams of Gramercy, and 19-year-old Kendell Prembrook of Laplace was driving the vehicle. Stegall says Prembrook was not injured in the shooting and troopers are leading the investigation at the request of the sheriff’s office.

Stegall says this is an ongoing investigation and the State Police Evidence Control Unit recovered weapons at the scene.

In Terrebonne Parish 77-year old Joseph Sias of New Orleans was killed early Sunday morning in a fatal crash involving another vehicle going in the wrong direction. Trooper Ross Brennan says Katelynn Scott of Houma was deemed impaired at the crash on US Highway 90 just west of state highway 316.

Brennan says the passenger in Sias’ vehicle sustained severe injuries and was transferred to an out-of-area hospital and Scott faces vehicular homicide charges.

Brennan says charges against Scott could change if conditions worsen for the other passenger involved. He says the two victims in the crash unfortunately were not wearing seatbelts.

Louisiana has nearly one million people living below the poverty line, and ULM president, Dr. Ron Berry says the university’s new strategic plan outlines how it can start changing that for the northeast region of our state.

Berry says ULM will strengthen ties with elementary school students to help guide them on the path to college while creating new pathways for adult learners as well.

The plan also calls for the university to raise $250 million by its 100th anniversary in 2031 to improve campus infrastructure, build a new Biomedical Research innovation park, and fund the new programs.

Doctor Tracy Fischer says their research found brain inflammation in nonhuman primates with COVID and the injury is consistent with reduced blood flow. L-S-P says deputies responded to 9-1-1 calls of a vehicle partially submerged in the marsh near I-10 and U-S 51 and when the officers approached the vehicle, an encounter occurred and one deputy shot 20-year-old Jacoby Williams of Gramercy who is in critical condition. An A-K 47 style firearm and handgun were recovered from the scene.

The Saints have re-signed defensive back P-J Williams to a one-year deal. Williams had 42 tackles and three interceptions last season. New Orleans has signed defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson who played in 12 games for the Texans last year and had nine tackles.

Tonight is the men’s national championship basketball in New Orleans as Kansas faces North Carolina. The eighth-seeded Tar Heels have won 17 of their last 20, while the top-seeded Jayhawks have won their five tournament games by an average of 14 points per game.

The Pelicans could have clinched a spot in the play-in tournament last night but lost to the Clippers in Los Angeles 119 to 100. The Clippers made 21 three-pointers.

LSU baseball dropped a series to Auburn over the weekend, committing four more errors and there were plays that could have been made but were not. Second baseman Jordan Thompson says it’s not a confidence issue…
