The Saints have hired former Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff as a consultant. Dimitroff was a two-time NFL executive of the year from 2008 to 2020 in Atlanta, drafting Matt Ryan and helping the Dirty Birds reach the Super Bowl in the 2016 season.

 

ULM football travels to Tuscaloosa this weekend to face number-21 Alabama after a 29 to 0 victory over Saint Francis last week. Head coach Bryant Vincent says he wants to see major strides from his team every week, but especially in week two.

Governor Landry and federal officials will be at Angola this afternoon to announce that ICE detainees will be housed at the State Penitentiary. In a statement, Governor Landry says criminal illegal aliens beware, Louisiana Lockup is where your time in America Ends. It’s been reported the undocumented immigrants will be housed at Camp J, which has been under renovation.

Two more Republicans are eyeing the U-S Senate race, Carencro Representative Julie Emerson and St. Tammany Councilwoman Kathy Seidan are looking at challenging Republican incumbent Bill Cassidy. Cassidy is already facing three announced challengers. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says it’s a sign many see Cassidy as vulnerable because of his 2021 vote to impeach President Trump…

After Louisiana solar panel installer PosiGen laid off 166 employees, one trade organization representing the solar, wind and energy storage industries is reaffirming its confidence in the growth of solar energy. Monika (noe-NEE-kah) Gerhart, the executive director of the Gulf States Renewable Energy Industries Association, says Louisiana is among the nation’s leaders in solar energy growth.

Union Parish vegetable farmer Conrad Cable says he will challenge Republican House Speaker and Fourth District Congressman Mike Johnson in next year’s federal elections. Johnson will be well-funded in his re-election bid, but Cable says he has a plan to raise money…

Republican U-S Senator Bill Cassidy is facing at least three Republican challengers in his bid for re-election. They are State Treasurer John Fleming, Acadiana state Senator Blake Miguez and Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says all of these candidates can make a run for U-S Senate and not lose their current seat…

In April, there will be a party primary, as Republican and no party voters will have a chance to elect a GOP candidate for the November election

A big press conference is scheduled for 3 PM today at Angola as Governor Landry along with federal officials will announce detainee undocumented immigrants will be housed at the State Penitentiary. Louisiana has nine ICE processing and detention centers and Louisiana Illuminator Editor Greg LaRose says Louisiana has become a go-to location for the Trump administration since it placed a heightened emphasis on immigration enforcement.

Governor Landry says the federal government has approved the state’s waiver that prohibits SNAP recipients from using food stamps to purchase soda, candy and energy drinks. Landry says this new policy is part of the state’s Make Louisiana Healthy agenda.

Landry says SNAP recipients are now able to purchase rotisserie chicken with food stamps, a healthy food item.

LSU fans thought they were robbed when the instant replay official determined that Barion Brown did not score a touchdown in the third quarter of Saturday night’s game. The official on the field, ruled it was a catch and Brown was out of bounds at the one-yard line. The instant replay looked like it was a touchdown, but the instant replay judge determined Brown did not possess the ball through the entire process of the catch. Coach Brian Kelly says the officials got the call right, but the rule should be changed…

Kelly also announced that receiver Destyn Hill suffered a fracture hand and will miss this Saturday night’s home opener against Louisiana Tech.

The Grambling State Tigers will face the A-P number-one team for the first time in program history as they travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State. Head coach Mickey Joseph is not backing down from the challenge and wants his team to focus on one play at a time while limiting sloppy play.

Nicholls is ranked 22nd in the Stats Perform FSC Top 25 poll. The Colonels defeated fifth-ranked U-I-W to start the season, before losing to Troy in a competitive game in week two. Nicholls hosts West Georgia this Saturday.

 

In the A-F-C-A coaches poll, McNeese is receiving votes. The Cowboys are at U-L Lafayette on Saturday night.

A teen is shot and killed in Eunice over the holiday weekend. Police Chief Kyle LeBouef says a group of teens wearing masks and hoodies were seen walking around, with some carrying guns. A short time later, police got a call, saying that someone had been shot. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Frederick Stevens Jr.

It’s unclear what led up to the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made.

As a result of its impressive win on the road at Clemson LSU moved up six spots in the AP Top 25 poll and is ranked third.  Louisiana Tech is up next for the third ranked Tigers. LSU put extra emphasis on beating Clemson as the Tigers desperately wanted to snap their streak of five consecutive season opening losses. They had shirts printed that said 1-and-0. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier says it’s great to start the season off with a win, now they got to do it again…

LSU Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week. Nussmeier threw for 232 yards and a touchdown and did not turn the ball over.

Center Braelin Moore has been named the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week. He helped the Tigers put up 354 total yards and maintain the ball for 37 minutes.

LSU hosts Louisiana Tech this Saturday. Bulldogs linebacker Mekhi Mason has been named Conference USA Player of the Week. He also had two sacks in the Bulldogs shutout win over Southeastern Louisiana.

 

T-minus five days before the Saints get their season underway in the Superdome against the Arizona Cardinals. The game marks the head coaching debut of Kellen Moore, the NFL’s youngest head coach. Moore says it’s a moment that he and the entire team have worked towards all off-season long.

The Saints made a controversial roster move as special teams standout J-T Gray has been released. Moore did not provide a reason why they released their special team specialist, only to say it was a tough decision but needed to maintain roster flexibility.

The Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax holiday is this weekend. From Friday to Sunday, consumers will not have to pay state and local sales taxes when purchasing firearms, ammunition and a wide range hunting supplies, including archery items, hunting apparel and certain types of knives.

 

Southwest Louisiana continues rebuilding five years after Hurricane Laura made landfall. Calcasieu Parish President Judd Bares (BEAR-es) says months after the vicious storm, the parish developed a long-term hurricane recovery plan which helped produce a more resilient and upgraded infrastructure system….

Twenty years ago, the largest field hospital in U.S. history was set up at LSU to provide care for storm weary patients who were ill or injured because of Hurricane Katrina. Doctor Matthew Giglia (JIL-lyah) was a sophomore at LSU planning to pursue a medical career and his time as a volunteer at the field hospital in the PMAC convinced him to become a doctor…

Doctor Giglia is now chief of surgery and a colon and rectal surgeon at Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Baton Rouge.

The Ragin Cajuns passing game was nonexistent in a 14-to-12 loss to Rice on Saturday night. New starting quarterback Walker Howard only threw for 88 yards and he was intercepted once. Coach Michael Desormeaux says he thought they would execute much better…

Howard also left the game late with an undisclosed injury. Desormeaux says Howard is not moving well and it sounds like he’ll be questionable for Saturday night’s home game against McNeese.

ULM defensive back D’Arco Perkins-McAllister has been named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. Perkins-McAllister had two sacks in the shutout win over St. Francis.

Louisiana Tech shutout Southeastern Louisiana 24-0 on Saturday night in Ruston. The Bulldogs led 3-0 at half, but scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away. Tech starting quarterback Trey Kukuk (Q-kuhk) threw a touchdown pass and says offensive coordinator Tony Franklin came down from the press box to call plays from the sidelines in the second half…

When the college football polls are released tomorrow, LSU could be ranked number one and Tulane could be ranked in the Top 25 after a dominating win over Northwestern 23 to 3.

It’s Labor Day and for the first time in many years there is a demand for labor in northeast Louisiana because of Meta’s 10-billion-dollar A-I data center they are building in Richland Parish. Economist Doctor Loren Scott says thousands of construction workers will be needed and the Monroe area has a chance to break employment records…

It looks like LSU has a defense to go along with what should be a good offense. The ninth-ranked Tigers defeated fourth ranked Clemson on Saturday night 17 to 10. For a fifth year in a row, Louisiana will showcase itself in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day. The theme of the 2026 parade is “The Magic in Teamwork,” and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says the state’s float, “Gulf to Gumbo,” highlights the teamwork needed to make a delicious pot of a Louisiana staple.

American Idol runner-up John Foster, who is from West Baton Rouge Parish will be the musical performer on the float.

According to Tangipahoa Parish Government, one-point-nine million gallons of product has been retrieved as cleanup operations continue from the massive fire and explosion from the Smitty’s Supply facility in Roseland. EPA is conducting around the clock air monitoring and there is still no indication of any imminent threat to public health.
