A week ago, the Department of Insurance announced that 20 auto insurance companies, including many big-name companies, filed for rate decreases. Whether that’s spurred by tort reform legislation, a decrease in crashes, or both, Governor Landry says to take advantage, you need to do your part.

Landry gave an example of when the husband of a state representative decided to shop his auto insurance premium.

Landry says while you’re shopping for the best auto insurance rates, you might as well shop for the best homeowners insurance premiums too.

The Saints wrap up their preseason Saturday against the Broncos in the Superdome. The biggest storyline of the preseason has been the battle to become the starting quarterback. At this point, it’s down to second-year man Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. Mike Hoss, the Saints’ play-by-play announcer on WWL radio, says at this point, the race is neck-and-neck.

Starting quarterback isn’t the only unsettled competition. Hoss says there’s battle brewing for backup running back behind Alvin Kamara, who will not play Saturday.

Hoss says the Saints have been busy with trades this pre-season, and there are still many decisions to be made by the time the roster needs to be pared down to 53 by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Tragedy in Livingston Parish as a teenage boy is killed while riding his bike in his subdivision. Sheriff Jason Ard says the driver who hit the boy was very drunk.

Sheriff Ard says the driver, 31-year-old Juan Chavarria, is from Nicaragua. He fled the scene, but deputies later caught him and arrested him.

Ard says given the hour that this happened, visibility was not a factor.

Louisiana farmers are producing a big corn crop this year, but producers are not getting a great price for that corn. LSU Ag Center Shelly Pate Kerns says the harvest will continue through August because acreage is up significantly…

Kerns says the crop received plenty of rain, so yields are expected to surpass last year’s 183 bushels per acre and input costs were also down…

But Kerns says bushels of corn has fallen below four dollars, because of an abundance supply of corn on the global markets…

The state department of insurance says auto insurers have filed over 20 rate decreases in Louisiana. The statewide average decrease is two-percent for drivers. Governor Jeff Landry says this is a good time to shop around for the best auto insurance rates. Landry says you might as well shop for the best homeowners insurance premiums too…

Hurricane Erin is moving away from the east coast of the United States but the National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on three more disturbances. LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim says we’ll likely get through August unscathed, but we’re not out of the woods entirely.

The SEC is moving to a nine-game league schedule in football in 2026. Not only will SEC teams play nine conference games starting next year, the league is also requiring each team to play a non-conference game against a school from another Power Four conference or Notre Dame each season. LSU Executive Deputy Director of Athletics Verge Ausberry says the SEC’s TV partners will appreciate having more compelling matchups

Buc-ee’s was expected to open its first location in Louisiana next year in Lafayette. But according to the company’s website, the Lafayette store will not open until 2028. No exact reason given for the delay, but Triton Construction said last month that construction was paused temporarily because of design delays and poor weather.

A close call for a 15-year-old Lake Charles girl, as she escapes a would-be kidnapper at a bus stop. Lake Charles Police Lieutenant Brenda Treadway says it happened at around 6:30 yesterday morning.

Cut 7 (12) “…drive by her.”

Treadway says around the third or fourth time he passed by her, 35-year-old Dustin Frederick stopped, got out, approached her, grabbed her and told her that she needed a ride. She says the girl was able to escape and authorities later arrested Frederick and charged him with one count of attempted kidnapping. His bond has been set at one million dollars.

The new format also includes playing the same three schools every year. The permanent opponents have yet to be announced.

The 2025 college football season gets underway tomorrow with Nicholls State hosting fourth-ranked Incarnate Word, and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2. Athletic director Jonathan Terrell (tuh-RELL) says they jumped at the chance to play in Week Zero on national T-V.

Tomorrow night, Southern plays North Carolina Central in Atlanta in the SWAC-MEAC challenge. Southern has yet to name a starting quarterback and they plan to use a running back by committee approach. Jacksonville State transfer Mike Franklin is expected to start and we’ll see if LSU transfer Trey Holly will get some carries.

This week the Saints acquired Devaughn Vele (VAY-lay) from Denver in exchange for a fourth round pick in 2026 and a seventh round pick in 2027. Vele fits a need for a big and physical receiver that New Orleans was missing as he is six-foot-five and 210 pounds. Coach Kellen Moore says the offense will benefit from the addition.

New Orleans will conclude the preseason tomorrow by hosting Denver. Spencer Rattler will start. Tyler Shough and Jake Haener will also take snaps.

The state insurance department says 14 auto insurers that do business in this state have decreased rates by more than one percent.

SEC football will go to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, that’s up from the current eight.  Each school will play three annual opponents, focused on maintaining traditional rivalries.  LSU Executive Deputy Director of Athletics Verge Ausberry says they don’t know yet which teams the Tigers will play every year.

SEC teams are also required by the league’s office to schedule at least one additional high quality non-conference game.

A close call for a 15-year-old Lake Charles girl as she waited for her school bus yesterday morning. Andrew Greenstein reports.

St. Martinville Police make additional arrests in the death of 16-year-old Iris Davis, who was found dead in a field near her home on July 21st. Eugene Taylor, Grace Taylor, and Dorian Savoy have all been charged with delinquency of a juvenile. Three other people have also been arrested in connection with the case, but no one has been charged with murder.

The Southeastern Conference announces that starting in 2026, the league will have a nine-game conference schedule in football. The SEC has been playing eight conference games since 1992. Each team will have three natural rivals; we don’t know who those schools are yet. Every four years, each school will play every school at least twice, once at home and on the road. Additionally, the SEC requires every school to play at least one non-conference game against an opponent from another Power 5 league or Notre Dame.

That’s Livingston Sheriff Jason Ard, who says 57-year-old Michael Ardoin stole the meat from a Walmart and Sam’s Club in Denham Springs. Ard says Ardoin was planning to resell the meat, to buy drugs.

Walmart is recalling frozen shrimp after the USDA said it could be radioactive. The contaminated shrimp came from an Indonesian firm, and it was sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including Louisiana. Louisiana Shrimp Association president Acy Cooper says this is why you should buy shrimp caught by Louisiana shrimpers – they don’t have any banned chemicals.

Rapides Parish deputies arrest a man after getting a tip from a social media post that a man was trying to talk to kids at a bus stop in neighboring Vernon Parish. Deputies found 65-year-old Clyde Krider asleep at the wheel inside his van in Plainview yesterday and arrested him on a probation violation for being near kids as a level two sex offender. Tommy Carnline with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office says especially with the new school year underway, now is a good time for parents to reset important safety rules with their kids.

Rapides Parish deputes have arrested a man after he allegedly was hanging out around a bus stop in Vernon Parish, talking with students, which is a violation of his probation because he is a level two sex offender. Where’s the beef? It was in his pants! That’s what the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office is saying when they arrested 57-year-old Michael Ardoin after finding hundreds of dollars worth of stolen meat products on him. Sheriff Jason Ard says Ardoin stole lean hamburger meat and ribeye steaks from a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Denham Springs.

Sheriff Ard says deputies were able to pull Ardoin over before he was able to get onto I-12 after getting some valuable information from the public.

Ard says even though deputies were able to recover the stolen meat, it does the Walmart no good.

Ard says investigators are still putting the pieces together, but it appears that Walmart’s total loss could approach one-thousand dollars.
