The 9th-ranked LSU women’s basketball team opened up SEC play last night by knocking off 24th-ranked Arkansas 69-45 in Fayetteville. Angel Reese and Alexis Morris each had 19 points and the Razorbacks shot just 28 percent from the field.

In men’s basketball action last night, Louisiana Tech trounced UTSA 91-69 as the Bulldogs shot 54-percent from the field. Isaiah Crawford had 20 points and six steals.

Sun Belt play started last night, the Ragin Cajuns missed a three-pointer with one second left and lost to Coastal Carolina 77-76. Jordan Brown had 25 points in a losing effort. ULM topped two-time conference regular season champion Texas State 57-53. Tyreke Locure had 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Pelicans go after their fifth straight win tonight as they host the 76ers in front of a sold-out Smoothie King Center. New Orleans is tied with Denver for the best record in the Western Conference at 22-12.

The LSU Ag Center says the recent freezes were disruptive to the sugarcane crop. Sugarcane specialist Kenneth Gravois says the crops now being harvested experienced what he calls a killing freeze…:

The Smoke-free Louisiana coalition says they saw an eight-percent increase in Quitline calls during the year by individuals looking to stop using tobacco products or vaping. Spokesperson Randy Hayden says a good New Year’s resolution for smokers would be to kick the habit…

Recent wastewater samples from Shreveport show an increase in COVID in northwestern Louisiana. The Center for Excellence for Emerging Viral Threats at LSU Health Shreveport has been monitoring samples. Dr. Krista Queen says when individuals are infected the virus begins replicating in their bodies even before they know they are sick.

LSU Coach Matt McMahon won his first SEC game last night as the Tigers knocked off ninth ranked Arkansas 60-57 in the conference opener for both teams. Reserve guard Trae Hannibal scored 19 points off the bench to lead the way as LSU has won 13 straight home games.

Tonight, La Tech hosts UTSA, the Cajuns are at Coastal Carolina and ULM visits Texas State.

What a night of basketball in the Bayou State last night! In front of a sold out Smoothie King Center crowd, Zion Williamson scored a career-high 43 points as the Pelicans edged Minnesota 119 to 118 for New Orleans fourth straight game. Williamson scored the final 16 points for the Pels, who are 15-and-4 on their home floor and they’ll host the 76ers on Friday night.

LSU won its SEC opener last night, upsetting Arkansas 60-57 in front of a loud PMAC crowd. Trae Hannibal had a huge game as he scored 19 points and had six rebounds. Derek Fountain had a double-double, 14 points and ten rebounds. The Bayou Bengals held the Hogs to 37-percent shooting as coach Matt McMahon is victorious in his first SEC game.

Also last night, 12th ranked Baylor beat Nicholls 85-56. Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts U-T-S-A.

Earlier this month, receiver Kayshon Boutte announced he was returning for his senior season at LSU. Yesterday afternoon, LSU announced Boutte would not play in the Citrus Bowl, but is enrolled for the spring semester. And then last night, Boutte announced he’s entering the NFL draft and skipping his senior season.

The Saints are getting ready for this Sunday’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia. New Orleans is not sure who they will see at quarterback. MVP candidate Jalen Hurts did not play last weekend because of a shoulder injury, so Gardner Minshew (Min-shoe) started and nearly led the Eagles to a win over Dallas. Hunger Free America says food insecurity is surging in Louisiana because of inflation and the expiration of the child tax credit and free school meals. Hunger Free America CEO, Joel Berg, says more than 470-thousand Louisiana residents are living without enough food and with the cuts to federal aid, their paychecks are not enough to keep enough food on the table.

Berg says the number of people without enough food over a seven-day period spiked by 26% in Louisiana, and 30% nationwide between October 2021 and October 2022.

LSU Ag Center experts say the recent freezes were disruptive to the sugar cane industry. Sugar cane specialist Kenneth Gravois says the crops now being harvested experienced what he calls a killing freeze.

However, he says ten of the eleven sugar cane mills in Louisiana are still processing cane, and 85 percent of the cane in the fields has already been harvested—and he adds that despite the freeze, the quality of the sugar being processed is still very good.

He says ideally, the weather will remain cool to refrigerate the mature cane that hasn’t been harvested yet. In addition, he says 90 percent of the new crop is already in the fields. Gravois says experts just tested soil temperatures to assess the health of that crop.

Queen says people in the area should practice social distancing, wear face masks, and clean their hands more often because they could be spreading COVID and not know it yet.

She says when individuals are infected the virus begins replicating in their body even before they know they are sick.

Queen says the increase of the virus in wastewater is similar to this time last year when because people tend to gather more for the holidays and also spread viruses.

With the New Year comes a significant change in corporate taxes for Louisiana. A tax reform package passed by lawmakers in 2021 reduces the state’s corporate franchise tax; a tax paid on companies’ capital. Tax attorney and consultant Jason Decuir says the difference is relatively little (.025 percent) but there is also a built-in exemption that will benefit smaller businesses…:

Decuir says this is a first step in eventually getting rid of corporate franchise taxes altogether…:

Last night, Northwestern State scored just 19 points in the second half. and lost to Texas A-and-M 64-52. The Demons head into Southland play with an 8-and-5 record.

The Sean Payton rumors of him returning to the Saints to be their head coach will not go away. Pro Football Talk is reporting there’s increasing chatter in league circles about Payton returning to the Saints and Tom Brady would be the Black and Gold’s quarterback. Brady is a free agent after the season. Denver and Carolina are looking for new coaches but Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio doesn’t see Payton going to those two teams.

Former Destrehan star and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed has been hired as the new head coach at Bethune Cookman. He takes over for Terry Sims who went 38-39 in seven seasons. Reed, who played for the Miami Hurricanes, has spent the last three years as an administrator with the Hurricanes football program.

The Pelicans host the Timberwolves tonight looking for their fourth straight win. The team has announced the game is a sell out at the Smoothie King Center and so is Friday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Zion Williamson has missed the last three games, but told reporters yesterday he expects to play tonight. Tip time is at 7 PM.

State Police says two people from Cut Off were killed in a three-vehicle wreck on Louisiana Highway One just north of the Leeville Tolll Bridge yesterday afternoon. The victims have been identified as 43-year-old Archie Duet and 53-year-old Guy Dupierre. L-S-P says Duet was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.

Just a few more days left in 2022 and there are some things you can do to lessen that tax bill that will be due in the spring time. CPA Jason Shellhaas (Shell-us) says taxpayers can help themselves and their favorite charity at the same time…

The Caesar’s Superdome was evacuated this morning after a construction fire broke out in the walls of the historic stadium. No injuries reported. The Saints are in Philadelphia on Sunday.
