The House Transportation Committee rejected the use of tolls to partially fund a new $2.1 billion I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. Brooke Thorington reports DOTD has other options.

I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish remains closed following Monday’s deadly pile-up crash that killed eight people and involved 168 vehicles. No timeline on when the bridge will open. Inspectors have identified several areas that need repairs.

Good start to the season for the Pelicans last night as they went on the road and defeated Memphis 111 to 104. C-J McCollum led the way with 24 points, Zion Williamson scored the team’s final 12 points and finished with 23. Brandon Ingram added 19. After missing the Army game with a sprained ankle, LSU offensive tackle Emery Jones is expected to play in the Alabama game as he has returned to practice. Also, the Tigers best corner, Zy Alexander, is expected to miss some time with a lower body injury.

Despite a 1-and-2 record in the Sun Belt, the Ragin Cajuns are still alive for a West Division championship as they get ready to visit South Alabama on Saturday. U-L Lafayette Coach Michael Desormeaux says they have five conference games left and they have to win them all…

A new I-10 bridge in Lake Charles is not coming anytime soon after the House Transportation Committee voted down a proposal to use a combination of tolls and taxpayer dollars to build a two-point-one billion dollar bridge. DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda says they’ll now look to rehab the current bridge built in 1952…

The key to this season is the health of power forward Zion Williamson who is entering his fifth season, but has only played in 114 games. Brandon Ingram also needs to show that he can stay healthy. The 26-year-old has missed 62 games over the last two seasons. Tip off tonight in Memphis at 7 PM.
Last night in Ruston, Louisiana Tech fell to New Mexico State 27-24. The Bulldogs fall to 3-and-6 on the season. That’s four losses on the season decided by eight points or less.

LSU Coach Brian Kelly provided an injury update on two key defensive starters. Kelly said cornerback Zy Alexander and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo will “miss some time.” It’s unclear if they will play against Alabama. Cornerbacks Duce Chestnut and Denver Harris remain inactive, so LSU is very thin at corner.

If Alexander, Chestnut and Harris are unavailable that leaves LSU with sophomores Sage Ryan and Laterrance Welch and freshmen Jeremiah Hughes and Javian Toviano at corner. Kelly is optimistic they can get the job done..

Former Congressman Ralph Abraham and influential Republican businessmen Lane Grigsby and Eddie Rispone were announced today as transition chairs for Governor-elect Jeff Landry’s transition team. Landry says the  transition headquarters will also be at his alma mater U-L Lafayette, instead of LSU, where previous incoming governors held them…

Landry says he plans to tackle the state’s crime problem as soon as he gets into office with a special session as early as mid-January. He says the state’s criminal justice system should work to keep people from going to jail, instead of letting criminals out…

State Police say vehicles involved in the massive car pileup on Interstate 55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish on Monday have been removed and cleanup is underway. Sergeant Kate Stegall says the bridge had to be cleared before inspectors could assess the damage.

Authorities say eight people died, 63 people were injured, and 168 vehicles were involved in the crash.

Department of Transportation will be using specialized equipment, such as ground penetrating radar as part of the inspection process. Stegall says reopening the roadway will be coordinated pending the results of the inspection.

Stegall says troopers are working to make sure all vehicles involved in the crash are accounted for. She urges anyone involved who wants to retrieve their vehicle or personal items to contact Troop B before going to the tow company.

Drivers and owners of vehicles can contact Troop B by email at TroopB@la.gov. There is no timeline for the completion of the reopening of Interstate 55.

Frustrating loss for the Louisiana Tech football team last night as they jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the second quarter, but ended up losing 27-24 to New Mexico State. The Bulldogs had two costly turnovers in the second half.

Hank Bachmeier got the start at quarterback for Tech. His first start in over a month and the Boise State transfer was 20 of 26 for 238 yards and a touchdown pass. He also rushed for two touchdowns. Coach Sonny Cumbie liked what what he saw from Bachmeier…

Steve Gruver, the father of Max Gruzer, says this legislation could have saved his son’s life. Max pledged at Phi Delta Theta and died in a hazing incident. The year before that same fraternity was suspended because of hazing.

House Republicans are now backing Louisiana’s Mike Johnson as the next Speaker of the House. Johnson is the fourth Republican to claim the speaker-designate title, but will he get the 217 votes needed to be elected as the next Speaker? The House is scheduled to hold a vote this morning.
