The legislative session must end Thursday and lawmakers are still trying to agree on a spending plan for next fiscal year. The Senate leadership would like to raise the spending cap in order to fund teacher pay raises and construction projects, but fiscal conservatives in the House are concerned about a loss in state revenue in 2025 when the state’s sales tax is lowered.

Ruston peaches are a sweet-tasty crop in North Louisiana but the peach industry is still dealing with a fungus in the soil nearly a decade later. Mitcham Farm Manager Joe Mitcham says farmers are still losing a portion of their crops due to the fungus.

Despite a decline in peach production in north Louisiana, the 73rd Ruston Peach Festival will still take place in downtown Ruston on Saturday.

Colorado State University researchers have increased their hurricane forecast and now predicting a near-average season. CSU Hurricane Investigator Angelie Nieves-Jimenez says they believe the 2023 season will produce 15 named storms….

Forecasters are keeping an eye on a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico, but significant strengthening is not expected as it makes its way towards Cuba.

Postseason baseball returns to Alex Box Stadium today as the nationally fifth seeded LSU Tigers host Tulane this afternoon to begin the Baton Rouge Regional. The Tigers enter today’s gaem with a 43-15 record. Coach Jay Johnson says they’ve treated every game like a playoff game, so….

Today is the ninth time LSU and Tulane have met in the postseason and LSU holds a six to two advantage over the Green Wave. 2003 was the last time they met in a Regional.

Tonight, Nicholls makes its first appearance in a Regional since 1998 when they play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Colonels have never won an NCAA Tournament game in program history as they are 0-6 in three previous regional appearances. Nicholls is 2-and-7 all-time against Bama with its last win in 2001.

The Ragin Cajuns make their 18th appearance in an NCAA Regional whent hey face 15th ranked Texas in the opening game of the Coral Gables Regional. U-L Lafayette will send Jackson Nezuh to the mound against the Big 12 regular-season champion Longhorns. Nezuh is 9-and-5 with a 6.14 ERA. The SEC announces it will play an eight-game conference schedule in 2024, the first year Texas and Oklahoma join the league. Several schools, including LSU, wanted to move to a nine-game schedule, but there was enough pushback the league has settled on eight conference games in 2024. LSU’s conference schedule for 2024 will be announced June 14th.

Louisiana and nine other states have filed a lawsuit against the federal government for the steep flood insurance rate hikes they are implementing. State Solicitor General Liz Murrill says there’s no transparency in what FEMA is doing…

LSU’s 2023 Louisiana Survey finds that 70-percent of residents support legal recreational use of marijuana. That percentage has increased from 42-percent in 2013. Doctor Michael Henderson organized the poll and says this is an issue the new governor and legislature will have to face…

House passed legislation to prohibit classroom discussion of sexual orientation and/or gender identity in public schools’ heads to the full Senate after Senate Education approved the bill. Critics refer to the legislation as Louisiana’s version of the “Don’t Say Gay Bill.” Bill author Haughton Representative Dodie Horton disagrees.

But opponents like openly gay Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis says the bill is hateful and it tells children they aren’t accepted if they are different.

The Senate Education Committee also sent a bill to the floor that would give school employees the right not to use alternate pronouns for children if it goes against their religious or moral convictions.

Louisiana has joined ten states in a lawsuit against FEMA over the federal agency’s Risk Rating 2.0 which is causing flood insurance premiums to go up substantially for homeowners in south Louisiana. State Solicitor General Liz Murrill says FEMA is not being transparent on how they came up with these new premiums…

Colorado State University hurricane researchers have increased their forecast slightly for this hurricane season, now calling for 15 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Researcher Angelie Nieves Jimenez says this is a difficult year to predict, as it’s rare for sea surface temperaturs to be this warm which is conducive to tropical storm formation, but an El Nino is also expected to develop which hinders storm development…

Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office is suing FEMA; seeking transparency on why flood insurance rates are skyrocketing.

The U-S Senate approved a bipartisan debt-ceiling deal late last night. Both of Louisiana’s Republican U-S Senators voted against it. John Kennedy says the bill would normalize and institutionalize emergency spending that Congress had to provide during the pandemic. And Bill Cassidy says the legislation cuts vital defense spending and barely decreases the debt.

A poll conducted by LSU finds that 70-percent of respondents support legally allowing people to possess small amounts of marijuana for recreational use. Director of the Louisiana Survey, Doctor Michael Henderson, says in 2013, only 42-percent supported legalization for recreational use and support is also growing among older individuals…

After being ranked number one for most of the season, the real season begins today for the LSU Tigers as they open the Baton Rouge Regional by hosting Tulane at 2 PM. The Tigers went 1-and-2 last week in the SEC Tournament but center fielder Dylan Crews says the postseason truly begins today….

Attorney General Jeff Landry has filed a lawsuit against FEMA over the new Risk Rating 2.0 flood insurance pricing policy. Landry says the federal agency’s rate increases place many Louisianans at risk of foreclosure. They have asked for open information on how the rates are set, with no response from FEMA…:

The Louisiana Senate has revived a bill that would ban gender affirming care for transgender youth. The legislation appeared to be dead for the session when the Senate Health and Welfare Committee voted against it, but the full Senate voted yesterday to bring the bill back up and it will be heard today by the Senate Judiciary A Committee.

Scalise issued a statement after a group supporting Republican candidate Stephen Waguespack released an attack ad against the perceived front-runner in the race Jeff Landry. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat…

The 30-second ad from Reboot Louisiana alleges Landry, who is the state’s top prosecutor, is responsible for the rise in violent crime. Pinsonat says Scalise issued the statement because he is concerned attacks between Republican candidates could cost the party the governor’s race…

Political observers believe the political fighting between Republican candidates in the 2015 governor’s race led to voters electing Democrat John Bel Edwards over Republican David Vitter.

In his statement, Scalise says Waguespack should denounce this negative ad and Reboot Louisiana PAC should take down this attack ad immediately. Pinsonat says it will be interesting to see how Waguespack and his supporting PAC will react

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams says he’s considering getting into the governor’s race. Gambit Political Commentator and columnist Clancy Dubos says if he is serious, we should know well before qualifying in August if he’s to be considered a formidable candidate.

According to an article in The Advocate, Williams says he’s been encouraged by several people to run for governor.

Gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Jeff Landry has campaign ads blaming the local justice systems for the rise in crime however Dubos says it’s Williams who’s more knowledgeable about the subject.

With Shawn Wilson the only Democrat in the race so far, Dubos says he imagines he’s not very happy to hear Williams could join the race. He says Wilson needs to boost his name recognition in the blue parish of Orleans.

Qualifying is from August 8th through the 10th, for the October 14th primary.

More than two years after the death of Marie Bourque, and her 12-year-old daughter Ski Smith who died in a trailer home fire, Casey Hatch is convicted of two counts of second-degree murder. Calcasieu Parish District Attorney Stephen Dwight says the jury came to the right conclusion.

Jurors heard 911 audio of Bourque pleading for help for herself and her children in the smoke-filled house on Dobertine Road, owned by Hatch before the call went silent. Public defender King Alexander said Hatch has schizophrenia and did not know right from wrong.

Hatch faces a mandatory life sentence for each of his convictions. Dwight hopes Bourque’s family can start moving forward one day at a time.

Bourque’s 11-year-old son was also severely injured in the fire. Hatch’s sentencing has been set for July 21.

The 2023 Louisiana survey, an annual poll produced by LSU, shows support growing for legal abortions. Director of the Louisiana Survey Dr. Michael Henderson says two months ago they polled about 500 Louisiana residents about the hot button topic.

52-percent say abortion should be legal, 44-percent agree with the state’s near total ban of abortions. Henderson says 85-percent of the respondents believe a woman should be able to obtain a legal abortion if the pregnancy has put the mother’s life in jeopardy and 77-percent also support an except if the pregnancy was the result of a rape…

There’s a split between keeping an eight-game conference schedule or going to a nine-game SEC schedule, which LSU favors. 247 sports national college football writher Brandon Marcello says part of the equation is the potential for more TV money from ESPN if they play an extra conference game….
