Governor Landry has released the call for the crime special session. For 17 days starting on February 19th, state lawmakers will consider legislation that would result in harsher penalties for offenders who are 17-years-old. The governor also wants to restrict parole eligibility and increase the penalties for carjacking and expand the methods that the death sentence can be carried out. The Pelicans started a four game road trip last night with an impressive 117 to 106 win over the Clippers. Los Angeles went into the game with the best record in the West. CJ McCollum hit five 3-pointers and had 25 points. Zion Williamson added 21 points and ten assists. Today was the trade deadline, but the Pels didn’t make any moves. They visit the Lakers tomorrow.

LSU, UL Lafayette and Louisiana Tech men’s basketball all lost last night. The Tigers were outclassed by the sixth ranked Volunteers as they fell to Tennessee 88-68. LSU fell behind 15-to-3 and never could catch up. Jalen Cook did not play because of a hamstring injury.

The Ragin Cajuns were outscored by 18 points in the second half and lost to Georgia State 78-69. The loss snaps Louisiana’s seven game winning streak.

Louisiana Tech’s six game winning streak ended with an 81-76 defeat to Western Kentucky.

But U-L-M won, beating Coastal Carolina 79-75.

The college baseball season gets underway next week. The 2024 SEC Baseball preseason poll came out today and the Tigers are picked to finish second in the west behind Arkansas.

The Ragin Cajuns are picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt, ULM 13th in the 14-team league.

Nicholls is the preseason favorite to win the Southland after winning the conference tournament last year.

Governor Jeff Landry announces he’s sending Louisiana National Guard troops to the southern border to assist the Texas National Guard in border security. The deployment is expected to cost the state three-million dollars and Landry says it’s well spent money….

Landry says several other states have also committed to sending their National Guard troops to the southern border.

He says the mission will help train the guardsmen for active duty and it will also help slow the amount of fentanyl entering the United States. He says many people know of someone who has died from a fentanyl overdose

Landry says the deployment could begin next month and he would not disclose how many guardsmen will be sent to Texas. Louisiana National Guard Brigadier General Thomas Friloux says their missions will be assigned through the Texas National Guard and they will not be in charge of detaining illegal citizens crossing the border

Financial problems have resulted in the town of Boyce having to lay-off its entire police force, except for police chief Ronald Goudeau (Good-oh). Goudeau says the town’s finances could no longer support the salaries of his six officers…

Goudeau says he’ll continue to patrol the town daily and Rapides Parish Sheriff deputies will also assist in law enforcement duties.

Goudeau is hopeful the town’s financial house can get back in order, so he can hire police officers again…

Goudeau says he’s been the police chief in Boyce since 2019, money problems plagued the town back then. Boyce mayor, Kelvin McCoy, says the police chief has significant authority over his budget and his budget has been completely expended.

Two of the state’s top educators were surprised Wednesday with the Milken Educator award and each received a $25 thousand dollar cash prize. The recipients are Northshore High science teacher Kelly Ryan and Destrehan sixth grade science teacher Lauren Waguespack. Ryan says she could have never prepared herself for such an award.

Ryan is the first-ever Milken Educator Award honoree in St. Tammany Parish Public School system history. The Northshore alumna was honored for challenging her 11th and 12th grade science students to take an active role in learning…

Ryan and Waguespack are two of four educators in the Bayou State who earned the 2023-2024 Milken Educator Award. Christine Bayard of Johnston-Hopkins Elementary in Iberia Parish and Derrick Winn of Crestworth Elementary in East Baton Rouge Parish also received the Milken Educator award this week.

During a school assembly, Waguespack was recognized with the “Oscar of Teaching” for her innovative teaching skills and pursuing leadership opportunities. The sixth-grade teacher at Harry Hurst Middle believes this award is a tremendous honor for educators…

Because of financial issues, the town of Boyce has been forced to lay-off its entire police force, except for police chief Ronald Goudeau. The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office says it will assist the town of Boyce with law enforcement duties. Boyce Mayor Kelvin McCoy has not commented on the situation.

A teenager was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Shreveport yesterday afternoon. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says officers were attempting to serve a warrant when 19-year-old Javaria Taylor of Shreveport shot Caddo sheriff’s Deputy Justin Dunn…

For the past two years, the weekend leading up to Mardi Gras day have been deadly on Louisiana roads as alcohol-related crashes increase. AAA’s Don Redman says during the 2022 and 2023 Carnival seasons, there were over 600 alcohol-related crashes with over 300 serious injuries.

Landry has asked Natural Resources Secretary Tyler Gray to develop a plan to merge D-N-R with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. Big win for the Pelicans last night, ULM was also victorious, while LSU was routed at 6th ranked Tennessee and Louisiana Tech and U-L Lafayette’s long winning streaks are over. That was night of basketball in the boot.

The Pelicans got off to a strong start and held off the Clippers 117 to 106. CJ McCollum had 25 points, 13 of them came in the fourth quarter. Zion Williamson had 21 points and ten assists.

The Cajuns eight game winning streak is over as they were upset at home by Georgia State 78-69. Western Kentucky snapped Louisiana Tech’s seven game winning streak as the Bulldogs lost for the first time at home falling to the Hilltoppers 81-76.

But ULM improved to 4-8 in the Sun Belt with a 79-75 win over Coastal Carolina.

The state’s top football prospect for the Class of 2024 signed with the LSU Tigers on National Signing Day. Acadiana High’s Dominick McKinley is a consensus five-star prospect and considered one of the best defensive tackles in the country. It’s a position of need for the Tigers. Coach Brian Kelly says they still plan to add to that position group…

U S Senator Bill Cassidy continues to question Governor Jeff Landry’s spending decisions. Cassidy said today he’s not a fan of spending three million dollars to send Louisiana National Guard troops to the U-S Mexico border. Cassidy has been very vocal about party primary elections that he says will cost the state 135-million dollars over ten years. Cassidy says that’s 138-million dollars that could go towards a new I-10 Lake Charles bridge….
