Seuzeneau says the worst hit area appears to be Pontchartrain Drive near Kostmayer Avenue and he says it’s a miracle that the only injuries they’ve seen are minor to moderate. No reported fatalities.

Nearly the entire state has experienced storm damage as fierce winds toppled trees and power poles. About 165-thousand people are without power. Entergy Louisiana spokesperson David Freese says crews are working to assess the damage and restore power as soon as possible…

A three day hearing wraps up today in a federal courtroom in Shreveport where arguments have been made concerning the legality of the Congressional map approved by state lawmakers in January. New Orleans Representative Mandie Landry testified yesterday. Landry, who’s also an attorney, says she was a bit surprised at the number of attorneys and out-of-state lawyers who were spectators. She says it drove home the importance of congressional maps and how decisions made in DC are riding on political boundaries.

Sixth district Congressman Garret Graves believes the map is unconstitutional because race was the driving factor for the new map.

Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis is gearing up for a second term in office. Ellis’ administration helped secure a big economic development win earlier this year, when Amazon announced plans to build a 56 thousand square foot last mile facility. The mayor is excited about bringing more jobs to the area.

LSU first baseman Jared Jones was the lead-off hitter last night and tied a school record with three home runs as the Tigers easily defeated McNeese 16 to 0. Jones now leads the team with 14 home runs. Freshman Jake Brown hit his first collegiate home run. LSU is at Tennessee this weekend.

The Ragin Cajuns will seek their 17th straight victory tonight when they host Louisiana Tech. 19th ranked U-L Lafayette easily defeated Prairie View 11 to 2 last night. Luke Yuhasz hit two home runs and Trey LaFleur had three hits. Caleb Stelly drove in three runs.

Former Ragin Cajuns pitcher Spencer Arrighetti has received the call to the big leagues and is set to start on the mound tonight for the Houston Astros. Arrighetti was Houston’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2023. He was drafted by the Astros in 2021.

Former LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers visits with the Chicago Bears today, who could take a receiver with the ninth overall pick.

Spring football comes to a close for the LSU Tigers on Saturday. One of the big developments during the spring is the decision to move Harold Perkins back to inside linebacker. For LSU’s defense to get back to respectability, Perkins knows he’ll have to be productive…

The Pels are at Sacramento tomorrow night, they currently occupy sixth place in the West by one one game over Phoenix with three games left.

A very strong storm system is sweeping across the state today. Numerous roads are closed as a result of downed trees or high water. According to the Louisiana Power outage map, 180-thousand customers are without power. If you don’t have to be on the roads, stay home.

According to a survey by the National Federation of Independent Business, optimism among small businesses has reached its lowest point in twelve years. Teiko Foxx has more.

LSU Coach Jay Johnson had slugging first baseman Jared Jones lead off last night and Jones did more than just get on base. The sophomore tied an LSU single-game record with three home runs as the Tigers trounced McNeese 16 to 0 in seven innings. Jones hit a solo shot in the first inning, a two-run blast in the third inning and a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

The Cajuns won their 16th straight as U-L Lafayette defeated Prairie View 11 to two. Trey LaFleur had three hits, including a home run and drove in three runs. U-L Lafayette will host Louisiana Tech tonight at six PM.

Also last night, Southern Miss defeated Southeastern Louisiana five to one, Tulane topped UNO seven to four. Collin Tuft homered and drove in three runs. Northwestern State and ULM were postponed because of rain. The same for Grambling-and Jackson State.

Troy Murphy scored 17 of his 31 points in the third quarter and the Pelicans defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 110 to 100. With three regular season games left, New Orleans is in sole possession of sixth place in the West, one game ahead of the Suns. The Pels are at Sacramento tomorrow.

The LSU baseball team looks to start a winning streak tonight as they host McNeese at 6:30 PM at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers have dropped their first four SEC series and they are no longer ranked. The Cowboys are 0-6 versus SEC teams this year.

The Ragin Cajuns find themselves ranked for the first time since 2017. D-1 Baseball has them ranked 19th as U-L Lafayette has rattled off 15 straight victories. Legislation to expand the school voucher program passes in the House after explosive testimony from a surprise ally. Brooke Thorington has more.

In a bid to curb classroom distractions, legislation aimed at restricting student cellphone usage or any electronic device during school hours unanimously passed the Senate. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says cellphones in the classroom are a big distraction for students.

The bill bans students from carrying cellphones “on his person” while in the classroom. Mizell says her bill would require students to put their cellphones in designated places during school hours.

Mizell says school leaders have the authority to have their own policy of no cellphones in the classroom, but they do not. She was questioned on the Senate floor about students not having a phone in the the event of an emergency, such as a school shooter…

There was emotional testimony in the House over expanding the school voucher program. House Bill 745 will eventually allow all families to apply for state grants for private school tuition regardless of financial need. New Orleans Democrat Jason Hughes surprised Republican lawmakers with his support of the bill.

Alexandria Democrat Representative Ed Larvadain spoke against the bill saying it would jeopardize funding for public schools, which are already having problems recruiting and retaining teachers.

Hughes acknowledged that his stance for the bill could cost him his seat but says he came to the legislature to make tough decisions and those who know him, heart know his heart for children.

Larvadain says moving education money around increases the possibility of fraud and abuse. He worries local superintendents will be faced with closing schools and he’s very concerned about the closures of elementary schools forcing young students to be bused even farther from home.

The House passed the bill 71-32. It was not along party lines either, six Republican lawmakers voted against it, and some Democrats voted in favor.

New Orleans Congressman Troy Carter commends the Environmental Protection Agency for implementing a final rule aimed at reducing cancer causing air pollution released by 51 plants and refineries in Louisiana. The rule significantly reduces the amount of chloroprene, ethylene oxide among others. Carter says this is a step towards environmental justice.

EPA says the rule will reduce both EtO and cholorprene emissions by nearly 80 percent and reduce nearby cancer rates by 96 percent. Carter says many of these plants are located near low-income communities with people who suffer with elevated health risks. The rule slashes more than six thousand tons of toxic air pollution by requiring facilities to conduct fenceline monitoring and lowering emissions.

The EPA action targets Denka Performance Elastomers facility in LaPlace which is the largest source of toxic emissions in the U-S. Carter says this rule addresses public health risks in local communities and protects future generations.

Denka plans to challenge the rule in court. The Louisiana Chemical Association argues that EPA used flawed data in determining this new regulation. The LCA plans to meet with it’s members to decide who to respond to this new EPA regulation.

The House Civil Law Committee approves legislation that would prohibit transgender individuals from using bathrooms in public buildings that’s in line with their gender identity. Denham Springs Representative Roger Wilder says he’s trying to prevent a biological woman from having to share a bathroom with a transgender female

Wilder says this legislation is in response to a biological male who identifies as a woman, demanding access to a female changing room at a facility in his district. The proposal covers bathrooms in schools, prisons and domestic violence shelters.

An advocate for domestic violence victims, Morgan Lamandre, argued this legislation puts federal funding for domestic violence shelters at risk because Louisiana’s shelters would be in violation of federal rules
