A Senate approved bill that would make the sale of consumable hemp products containing THC illegal has passed the House Criminal Justice Committee with a 7 to 5 vote and now moves onto the House floor.  Sean Richardson has more on the debate.

Today is the deadline to file your state income taxes. But don’t worry if you need more time. Louisiana has an automatic six-month extension to November 15, 2024. Connor Brown is a certified tax preparer for LaPorte CPAs and Business Advisors

That means if you think or know you will owe some taxes that still need to be paid by today. Otherwise, you will start accruing interest and penalties.

The National Weather Service says multiple tornadoes touched down in southwest Louisiana on Monday. Meteorologist Jeremy Michael says two tornadoes touched down in the Lake Charles area and the other in St. Martin Parish

Several businesses and homes were damaged in Sulphur and its estimated peak winds were 120-miles per hours. Michael says an EF two tornado also hit Henderson in St. Martin Parish and it caused significant damage…

Another storm system will move into the state tomorrow. Michael says this system looks to be more of a heavy rain event than severe storms, but southwest and central Louisiana have already received enough rain for the week as rivers and bayous are at flood stage…

The highest risk for widespread heavy rainfall is north of the I-10 corridor. State health department confirms three storm related deaths from Monday’s severe weather, one woman in St. Martin Parish, a pregnant women and her fetus were also killed in Port Allen.

The Skyline of Lake Charles is changing as the tall, mirrored Hertz building is finally coming down. It has been four years since the building sustained significant damage in Hurricane Laura leaving multiple broken glass panes to greet travelers on I-10. Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says they are making sure the taxpayers are not footing the bill for the demolition…

Hunter says the city does not own the Hertz Building but he is among many who wanted to save it. He and city officials met with a least a dozen private developers in hopes of finding a way…

Staging for demolition will begin around May 20th and the building is expected to come down in Late August to Early September. Hunter says city consultants are there to ensure a safe event and he promised that whatever replaces the structure will be better than the current view.

Shreveport Senator Thomas Pressley says there are dozens of THC products available to buy that can get you high and some of them are marketed towards children…

Currently, point-three-percent THC is allowed in a consumable hemp product. Pressly’s bill says none at all if it becomes law.

Gerrity says prohibiting the sale of THC in a regulated, licensed, and taxable market will only drive people back to the black market.

Joseph Jones, System Director for North Louisiana Crime Lab said a huge factor for dealing with THC products in Louisiana are the standards of dosages from one product to another.

Darrell Schweiss – Executive Director of the Hemp Association of Louisiana says that he believes that this industry can be regulated and protect the thousand of Louisiana business owners that have invested in Hemp Market.

The bill moves onto the House and if signed into law will take effect August 1.

West Monroe Senator Jay Morris says he agrees with the governor’s desire to keep certain records out of public view, but it’s hard to find a balance between transparency and keeping government information hidden

There are still two other bills alive in the legislative session that would limit public access to state government records, but it remains to be seen if they can get approval in the Senate.

Former state senator Bodi White has stepped as Governor Landry’s legislative liaison to the Senate. The Advocate reports White got into a heated argument with one of Landry’s staffers over whether a bill the governor wants passed has adequate funding.

The 2024 NFL schedule comes out tomorrow night. The Saints will have home games against their NFC South Division rivals along with Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, the Eagles, the Rams, the Raiders, Sean Payton and the Broncos and the Browns. New Orleans will visit its NFC South rivals and also make trips to Dallas, Green Bay, Kansas City, the Chargers and Giants.

The Saints will hold training camp this year at the University of California-Irvine and Nola-dot-com’s Jeff Duncan reports New Orleans will open the preseason schedule by visiting the Cardinals and then play the 49ers in San Francisco. There will also be joint practices against the defending NFC Champs before that game against San Fran.

ESPN has announced LSU’s season opener against the USC Trojans in Las Vegas will kick off at 6:30 PM on Sunday September first.

The W-N-B-A tips off a highly anticipated season tonight. Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky will open their season tomorrow in Dallas.

It’s the final week of the regular season in college baseball and there are a couple of games on the schedule tonight. Southeastern Louisiana hosts South Alabama. The Lions are coming off a sweep of U-I-W. McNeese plays its home finale tonight as the Cowboys take on Texas State. The Cowboys have won three conference series in a row to move from ninth in the Southland standings to fourth.

The Ragin Cajuns have moved up one spot to number 21 in the latest D-1 baseball poll. U-L Lafayette needs just one win to claim an outright Sun Belt regular season championship. The Cajuns begin a three-game series against South Alabama on Thursday.

LSU has an RPI of 34 and its strength of schedule is 21 as it gets ready to host Ole Miss for a three-game series starting on Thursday. 13 is the number that matters the most. The Tigers need to sweep Ole Miss to finish 13 and 17 to give them a legitimate shot of earning a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

A wind gust of 83 miles per hour was reportedly recorded at the nearby Erwinville Community Center at that time. Groger says they are asking the public to stay off the roads in storm damaged areas…

A 24-year-old woman from Texas died in St. Martin Parish from a suspected tornado. Major Ginny Higgins with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office says the woman was in a camper…

One of the St. Martin Parish’s most famous restaurants, Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant in Henderson sustained some damage. Higgins says the restaurant is not a total loss, but repairs will be needed…

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is in contact with local emergency partners and receiving damage assessments. GOHSEP director Jacques Thibodaux says a squall line with hurricane force winds and possible tornadoes caused damage from southwest Louisiana through south central Louisiana…

As of 1 PM this afternoon, Entergy reported 39-thousand customers without power. Governor Jeff Landry says a storm out of Texas converged with another story system coming out of the Gulf of Mexico to produce the deadly results…

At the state capitol, the Louisiana House has given final legislative approval to a measure that repeals a 2022 state law that called for cameras on the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge that would issue tickets to motorists who drove over the speed limit. New Iberia Senator Blake Miguez says human police officers should issue traffic citations and the operator of the camera system would take money away from local criminal justice systems…

Jury selection is underway in Avoyelles Parish where Christopher McCoy of Bunkie is facing vehicular homicide charges. State Police say last June McCoy was nearly twice the legal limit when his vehicle ran off the road, killing a passenger inside his vehicle, Lauren Vaughn.

At least two people are dead in south Louisiana as a result of the strong storms that pushed through the area late yesterday afternoon and into the early evening hours. West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office Sergeant Landon Groger says a fatality occurred in his parish when a tree fell on a mobile home…

Groger says the most of the damage sustained in West Baton Rouge is in Erwinville, where wind gusts of 80 miles per hour were reported.

Very scary situation this past weekend in Abbeville when a 16-year-old brandished a gun as 60 children were set to receive their First Communion. Law enforcement was quick to respond at St. Mary Magdalen Church….

The teenager reportedly told parishioners he came to the church armed, because he heard someone was going to attack the priest and he wanted to protect him.

The Saints have announced the signing of defensive tackle Kendal Vickers and offensive lineman Lucas Patrick. Vickers appeared in two games with the Bills last season and spent three seasons with the Raiders. Patrick is a seven-year NFL vet who has started 54 games with the Packers and the Bears.

The NFL schedule will be released tomorrow night. Two games were confirmed yesterday. The season opener is Baltimore at Kansas City on September 5th. The Cowboys will kick off the regular season in Cleveland against the Browns. That will be Tom Brady’s debut in the broadcast booth for Fox.

Also, Tampa Bay has signed safety Antonio Winfield to an 84-million dollar deal, making him the highest paid defensive back in the NFL. And the Lions have signed quarterback Jared Goff to a four-year 212 million dollar contract.

Brett McMurphy with Action Network is reporting New Orleans is bidding to hold the College Football Playoff national championship in 2028.

Former Ragin Cajuns star Spencer Arrighetti won his first major league game last night as Houston defeated the Oakland As nine to two. Arrighetti allowed two runs over five innings. Former LSU star Alex Bregman hit two home runs.

College baseball tonight…McNeese hosts Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana hosts South Alabama.

LSU gymnast Sierra Ballard has announced she’s returning for her final season with the Tigers. Ballard led off on floor in all 16 compeititions and averaged a 9.820 on beam for the year.

Home and away opponents for the 2024-25 season have been released for LSU men’s basketball. The Tigers will play Arkansas, Texas A-and-M, and Ole Miss home and away. They will host Auburn, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A-and-M, and Vanderbilt. LSU will visit Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas A-and-M.

Ashbrook says these termites are some of the most destructive species we have and they are responsible for billions in damages every year. He says if they get in your home, they love to feast on moist wood as a result of a water leak or drainage issue…

The pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville says 60 children were set to receive their First Communion on Saturday when a teenager entered the church and brandished a gun. Law enforcement was quick to respond and a frightening experience ended with no shots fired…

Authorities have charged a 16-year-old with terrorizing and two counts of possession of a firearm by a juvenile. The Diocese of Lafayette says the gunman was dressed in all black with a hoodie over his head and wearing a mask. After he was taken into custody, the all clear was given…

Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel says they will have uniformed law enforcement at all upcoming Masses. First Communicants can receive First Holy Communion at whichever Mass they choose this weekend.

The Louisiana House has given final legislative approval to a bill that scraps a plan to put cameras up on the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge that would issue tickets to speeding violators resulting in twice the normal fine. New Iberia Senator Blake Miguez is a big proponent of cops ticketing speeding vehicles, not cameras
