A Tangipahoa Parish grand jury has formally charged Daniel Callihan with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Callie Brunett of Loranger and her four-year-old daughter Erin. The other suspect, Victoria Cox, faces one count of first-degree murder. With federal charges also anticipated, District Attorney Scott Perrilloux wants the pair to be tried in Louisiana first.

The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested four individuals in connection with the death of 38-year-old Ashley Beauclair of Marksville. Governor Jeff Landry has signed House Bill 684, which re-establishes a black bear hunting season in Louisiana. The season will take place in December in a handful of parishes in northeast Louisiana.

On Saturday, nine sports figures will be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, including former Saints quarterback Drew Brees and LSU legend Seimone Augustus. Hall of Fame Foundation President Ronnie Rantz says Augustus is regarded as the greatest women’s basketball player ever from Louisiana.

After seven seasons as the head softball coach for the Cajuns, Gerry Glasco is leaving U-L Lafayette for Texas Tech. Glasco was 302-and-88 as the coach of the Cajuns and this past season U-L Lafayette won 45 games and hosted a regional. The school says a national search for the next head coach is underway and Dave Schultz, hosted of the Locked on Sun Belt podcast, says the Cajuns should have some good candidates who are looking to lead a very successful program…

Glasco will take over a Texas Tech program that was 29 and 21 last season.

LSU has received a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Carius Curne. He’s ranked as the top player in Arkansas. ON-3 dot-com has Curne ranked as the fifth best interior offensive lineman in the country. He’s from Marion, Arkansas, and Curne is six-foot-four, 320 pounds.

The Saints have signed a defensive back from New Orleans. Roderic Teamer played at Tulane and Brother Martin. He has appeared in 40 games in the NFL, making 11 starts with 103 tackles and an interception. Teamer went undrafted in 2019, but he’s spent the last three seasons with the Raiders.

Former LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese became the first WNBA rookie to record seven straight double-doubles. Reese had 16 points and 18 rebounds as the Chicago Sky defeated the Dallas Wings 83 to 72 to end a four-game losing streak.

The NCAA has presented plans to Division One conference commissioners that would expand the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments by four to eight teams or keep it at 68. If the tournament is expanded, it would mean the 10 through 12 seeds would be involved in play-in games.

The new law requiring public classrooms to display the Ten Commandments is already facing a legal challenge. Loyola University Law professor Dane Ciolino says while it violates the First Amendment; the bill was written to display them for historical not religious purposes.

In 1980 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a similar law in Kentucky was unconstitutional, but in 2022, Ciolino says the high court ruled in favor of a high school football coach in Washington who prayed with students on the field on the basis of history and tradition.

Ciolino expects the law to be deemed unconstitutional and that  Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murril will appeal it to the U.S. Supreme Court, which is more conservative than in the past.

The ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation say they plan to file a joint lawsuit against the measure.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission has ordered SWEPCO to issue 23-million dollars in refunds to its 240-thousand customers in 12 northwest Louisiana parishes. Commissioner Foster Campbell says SWEPCO customers deserve a credit, because of an accounting error

Campbell says the credit will amount to 21-dollars per month for the average SWEPCO residental customer and it should appear on July, August and September bills.
