Busy day at the state capitol today as several committees are meeting to discuss the state’s auto insurance rates, which are among the highest in the country. House Insurance Chairman Gabe Firment says this is one of the biggest issues the state is facing…

At today’s hearing, they will discuss how attorney advertising impacts rates and whether gender should be a factor in premiums, single women have higher rates than married women.

 

Tomorrow is the start of dove hunting season and this weekend it’s the Second Amendment Sales Tax holiday, which means guns, ammunition and hunting supplies are exempt from the state’s 0.45 percent sales tax. Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey sponsored the legislation that brought back this sales tax holiday…

Mr. Football in 2023 is getting a chance to be a running back for the LSU Tigers. Former Lafayette Christian star Ju’Juan Johnson is the state’s all-time passing leader in Louisiana high school history and he’s also electric with the ball in his hands. With LSU losing John Emery to a season-ending ACL injury, the Tigers are down to three scholarship running backs. Coach Brian Kelly is giving Johnson a look at running back and he might see some carries on Saturday night against Nicholls.

Based on Sunday’s performance against the Trojans, it appears LSU’s defense is better this season. Tigers Defensive end Sai’vion Jones says new defensive coordinator Blake Baker has made a big difference …

Tonight is the first Friday night of high school football regular season…a big one tonight in Ruston as the defending Division One non-select champs host Acadiana.

The Louisiana House Insurance Committee meets again today to discuss the ongoing auto insurance crisis. Sean Richardson has more.

 The flash flood watch continues for parishes along the I-10—I-12 corridor and along the coast. The National Weather Service says over a half of foot rain has already fallen Houma, Slidell and parts of Baton Rouge. Another two to four inches could fall today.

 An iconic part of the Lake Charles skyline will be coming down tomorrow morning. The Capital One Tower will be imploded at eight a-m. Demolition project manager Josh Stevens says this will be the tallest building his company has ever demolished.

Most of the tower’s windows were blown out during Hurricane Laura four years ago.

Today through Sunday is the Second Amendment Sales Tax weekend which means guns, ammunition and hunting supplies are tax free as consumers do not have to pay the 4.45 percent state sales tax. It’s the result of a 2023 law sponsored by Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey who says this weekend brings in out of state visitors…

LSU starting safety Jardin Gilbert will miss the first half of Saturday night’s game against Nicholls because of a targeting penalty called against him in Sunday’s loss to USC. Also, starting safety Jordan Allen is dealing with turf toe. Coach Brian Kelly says he’s preparing to get freshman Dashawn Spears and redshirt freshman Kylin Jackson on the field more this Saturday…

Running back John Emery announced his Instagram that he had surgery today on his torn ACL.

McNeese State is at Texas A-and-M on Saturday and starting quarterback Clifton McDowell is questionable because of an unspecified injury. If McDowell can’t play, redshirt freshman Kamden Sixkiller, would get the start. He saw against Southern and was 9 of 19 for 80 yards.

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was listed as full participant at practice today. He was limited on Wednesday due to a hip injury that he sustained during the early days of training camp. But linebacker Willie Gay and offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri continue to be limited by injuries as the team prepares for Sunday’s season opener against Carolina.

Louisiana experienced a significant reduction in highway deaths in 2023, with data showing 811 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes with a 10.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Sean Richardson has more.

If you want to join the next cadet class for the Louisiana State Police, time is running out to apply. The deadline for applying for the 106th Cadet Class is September 18th, less than two weeks away. Lieutenant Robert Fontenot says applicants need to meet certain requirements.

Not to mention that applicants need to have the physical and mental capabilities to work in law enforcement.

Just being approved to go through academy yields a handsome starting salary.

By the end of that first year, the salary for rookie troopers will increase to 61-thousand dollars a year. In addition, troopers will be given a take-home vehicle, opportunities for overtime and a generous retirement package.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says the number of highway deaths declined in 2023 by 10.5-percent to 811.  Spokesperson Greg Fischer says this decline in fatalities marks a positive shift following a surge in deadly crashes during the Covid pandemic…

Pedestrian fatalities that hit alarming rates during the pandemic, were down to 147 in 2023, nearly a 20-perdent decrease, and bicycle fatalities dropped from 44 to 35 and crashes involving a driver with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher decreased to 195, a 13.3-percent drop from 2022. Fischer, however, says there was an increase in motorcycle fatalities…

Fischer says the seatbelt usage rate is the highest ever recorded in Louisiana at over 88-percent, a three-percent increase from the previous year…

Overall, the decline in highway deaths offers hope Louisiana’s roads are becoming safer, but it serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for responsible driving.

A flood watch is in effect for nearly all of South Louisiana. National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Gilmore says the area is expected to get heavy rainfall over the next couple days.

This all comes as a disturbance is churning up once again in the Gulf of Mexico along the Texas coast. The National Hurricane Center says it has a ten-percent chance of developing in the next seven days. It’s one of five disturbances currently in the Atlantic.

Gilmore says the prolonged rain is increasing the chances of flooding.

Lewis is a former LSU Tiger and Hunt played for the Ragin Cajuns.

The Jennings Police Department says a traffic stop led to two narcotics arrests and the confiscation of 55-thousand lethal doses of Fentanyl. Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes says Michael Lynn Prudhomme and Robert Moore were the two men apprehended and Moore faces numerous charges including five counts of possession of a schedule two drug with the intention to sell…

A low-pressure area in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is providing the energy to produce the showers and thunderstorms and breezy conditions.  Southeast Louisiana is expected to see higher rain totals. The Houma area could see as much as eight inches of rain.

State Treasurer John Fleming presented a retired man in Baton Rouge with a check of 13-thousand dollars. The money came from the state’s Unclaimed Property Program. Fleming says his office will go to great lengths to track down the rightful owner…

The Advocate is reporting another high-level official with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has left. DEQ’s budget chief Christian Griffiths is now with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Another top ranking official, Chandra Pidgeon, who left after only two weeks on the job, accused DEQ Secretary Aurelia Giacometto of harassing employees. Governor Landry has said the criticisms of Giacometto are from entrenched bureaucrats who resist change.

The eleven-year-old accused of killing former Minden Mayor and city councilman Joe Cornelius and his daughter, Keisha Miles, has pleaded not guilty to two-first degree murder charges. The suspect is being held at the Ware Youth Center in Coushattta and prosecutors are still trying to determine whether this case should be handled in adult or juvenile court.
