What a difference a year makes when it comes to LSU’s defense. Ole Miss rolled up a school record 706 yards of offense against the Tigers last year, but they only reached the end zone twice last Saturday night. Coach Brian Kelly says the tackling was much better this time…

Sophomore linebacker Whit Weeks is the SEC defensive player of the week after his career-high 18 tackles and defensive end Bradyn Swinson was named the league’s defensive lineman of the week after picking up two more sacks. The Tigers are at Arkansas on Saturday night.

In women’s basketball, LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson and Aneesah Moore are the Preseason Co-SEC Player of the Year. The duo shared the honor with Texas’ Madison Booker. The preseason media poll has LSU finishing third, followed by South Carolina and Texas.

The popularity of Dennis Allen is at an all-time low among Who Dat Nation as the Saints are in a four-game losing streak. Allen’s predecessor, Sean Payton, will be back in the Superdome on Sunday as Payton’s Denver Broncos will take on the Black and Gold. Allen says it will be a challenge coaching against a New Orleans institution.

Seventeen players are listed on the injury report, but if New Orleans practiced yesterday, the Saints say Taysom Hill would have practiced. Allen also says Tyrann Mathieu will be fine after leaving yesterday’s game with a forearm injury.

Fresh off a win against Middle Tennessee last Thursday, Louisiana Tech is in action again tonight against New Mexico State. Bulldogs quarterback Evan Bullock was named Conference USA Player of the Week. Bullock accounted for six touchdowns last week and threw for 296 yards.

The Sun Belt men’s basketball preseason poll came out today, the Cajuns are picked to finish fourth, while ULM is picked to finish last.

 

For the first time ever, McNeese received votes in the Associated Press preseason Top 25. The Cowboys are coming off a 30-win season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Pokes received 11 votes.

It was a game for the ages – LSU’s come from behind 29-26 overtime thriller over Ole Miss. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier called it the worst game of his career, completing less than 50 percent of his passes and throwing two interceptions. But Head Coach Brian Kelly says the offense never blinked..

It’s the fourth straight loss for New Orleans who gave up 594 total yards, second most in franchise history.

On Saturday, the Ragin Cajuns improved to 5-and-1 overall and 2-and-0 in the Sun Belt with a 34-24 victory over Appalachian State. U-L Lafayette scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Mountaineers. Coach Michael Desormeaux’s team has won in its last three games by ten points or less.

ULM is now 5-and-1 for the first time since 1987 after beating Southern Miss 38-21. The Warhawks are 3-and-0 in the Sun Belt. Southeastern Louisiana is 2-and-0 in the Southland after winning easily over Houston Christian 37 to 7.

Grambling is now 0-and-2 in the SWAC after losing to Alcorn State 17 to 15.

For the third consecutive year in a row, endangered sea turtle hatchlings have been observed on the Chandeleur Islands, which are located off the easternmost point of Louisiana. Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Project Manager Todd Baker says this discovery is part of a 300-million-dollar restoration project for the islands, which is expected to be completed by 2026.

Since 2022, Baker says the islands have seen 136 turtle crawls, making it one of the highest-density nesting beaches in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Tax Attorney Sanders Colbert says the governor also wants to simplify the state sales tax code, which Colbert says is among the most complicated in the country…

Loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings have been found on Louisiana’s Chandeleur Islands for the third consecutive year. Sean Richardson has the story on the Chandeleur Island restoration project.

Near record high temperatures in south Louisiana today, but a cold front will hit the state on Tuesday and high temperatures on Wednesday in north Louisiana will be around 70, mid 70s for south Louisiana with lows in the 40s. The National Hurricane Center is watching an area of low pressure in the central Atlantic that has a medium chance of developing into a named storm later this week.

The I-20 rehabilitation project in Bossier Parish continues to move forward. Three of the four closed ramps at the Old Minden Road interchange are scheduled to reopen today. DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says in two weeks the project will transition into the initial stages of Phase 3 with a traffic shift for I-20 eastbound onto new paved lanes on the interstate….

A big milestone for the massive I-20 construction project in Bossier Parish. Today, three of the four ramps currently closed at the Old Minden Road interchange reopen. The lone holdout, the westbound on-ramp, is expected to reopen in a week following final drainage work. DOTD Spokeswoman Erin Buchanan says the project is moving along on schedule.

And with that new phase, traffic will be flowing on newly-built roadways, which are replacing roadways that had outlived their usefulness.

During construction, tractor-trailers have thus far been prohibited from going through the construction zone, and that prohibition will remain in place as the project enters the final phase.

We’re just weeks away from a special session, in which lawmakers will consider Governor Landry’s sweeping tax reform proposal. What does his proposal mean for the average Louisiana taxpayer? Tax attorney Sanders Colbert (COLE-bert) says the wealthiest taxpayers will still pay the lion’s share of the state’s income taxes.

Part of Landry’s plan to make up for the reduction in income tax collection is to start collecting sales taxes on services not currently being taxed. Landry’s plan also involves simplifying the state sales tax code, which Colbert says is among the most complicated in the country.

Landry’s plan would also reform the inventory tax, which along with the franchise tax that he’s also looking to eliminate, has been discouraging businesses from coming to Louisiana, according to Colbert.

The special session is slated to take place next month. And some of the items, if passed, would go to voters for final approval.

Lacy said there was no quit in the team, even as they were settling for field goals through much of the game.

Immediately after Lacy caught the 25-yard game winning TD pass, fans stormed the field.

Fifth-four pick Spencer Rattler will make his NFL debut on Sunday as he’ll start at quarterback for the Saints against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. New Orleans offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak says not only does he have confidence in Rattler, but Rattler has a lot of confidence in himself.

La Tech quarterback Evan Bullock threw five touchdowns and ran for another on Thursday as the Bulldogs trounced Middle Tennessee 48 to 21. Tech is at New Mexico State on Tuesday. The Aggies are 1-and-5.

A Baton Rouge company that makes cooling equipment for work helmets and caps is involved in a court battle with a Sun Day Red, which is a joint venture between TaylorMade Golf legendary golfer Tiger Woods. Both companies have a similar logo, but Tigeraire CEO Jack Karavich says they began using their current logo in 2020, while Sun Day Red was founded earlier this year…
