Plenty of reaction to a federal judge’s preliminary ruling that the state’s Ten Commandments law is unconstitutional. Andrew Greenstein reports.

An LSU student has been arrested for threatening to kill Governor Jeff Landry. Authorities say 21-year-old Jackson Pemberton posted on the social media website “X” that I am going to kill you Jeff Landry. WBRZ-TV reports Pemberton was upset about the governor arranging for a live tiger to be brought into Tiger Stadium.

Louisiana Congressman Garret Graves is hailing the overwhelming House passage of the Social Security Fairness Act. The bill that passed 327 to 75 eliminates the Windfall Elimination Penalty and the Government Pension Offset. Graves says Louisiana has been among the most impacted by these two provisions.

The two provisions had the effect of reducing Social Security benefits for people who worked in the public sector, such as teachers, police officers and firefighters.

A woman who claimed her son had been kidnapped is facing several charges. The child was not kidnapped. St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Major Mark LeBlanc says Artasia Viges (VEE-zhees) four year old son actually got out of a moving car during a disagreement.

Viges faces three charges, including child desertion and false swearing.

The Louisiana House has approved two significant pieces of Governor Jeff Landry’s tax plan. The first bill to head to the Senate for its approval is a measure reduce individual income taxes to a flat three-percent rate. The bill passed on an 87-12 vote, with only Democrats voting against it. The Louisiana House also approved a bill to repeal the corporation franchise tax. Emerson says this is a tax that’s hurt economic development efforts in Louisiana…

Plenty of reaction after a federal court judge in Baton Rouge put the state’s Ten Commandments law on hold. Jabarie Walker, the political director at the ACLU of Louisiana, kids should be able to go to school without fear that a religion – especially one that they do not practice – will be pushed on them.

In a statement, Attorney General Liz Murrill said she strongly disagrees with Judge DeGravelles’ decision and will immediately appeal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

A woman claimed that her son had been kidnapped is now facing charges. St. Landry Parish Sheriff deputies says Artasia Vigees told authorities her child was taken while she was attending to a flat tire. But Major Mark LeBlacn says investigators determined that’s not what happened…

Plenty of reaction after a federal court judge in Baton Rouge put the state’s Ten Commandments law on hold. Jabarie Walker, the political director at the ACLU of Louisiana, hailed Judge John deGravelles’ (de-GRAVEL) ruling, saying it ensures the separation of church and state.

And Walker says part of that separation of church and state is keeping religion out of public schools.

Walker says kids should be able to go to school without fear that a religion – especially one that they do not practice – will be pushed on them.

Keep Louisiana Beautiful is hosting Regional Litter Summits in Louisiana this week to address the state’s litter problem. KLB Executive Director Susan Russell says these summits, supported by Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, aim to increase support from local governments, partners, and elected officials in the effort to clean up Louisiana.

The Alexandria summit is today at The Randolph Riverfront Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next summit is Friday at the Lake Charles Event Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Russell says they want to understand challenges that local governments face in managing litter and explore ways to assist them. A woman claimed that her son had been kidnapped. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, however, determined it to be something else entirely. Major Mark LeBlanc says Artasia Viges (VEE-zhees) and her son, who’s less than five years old, had a disagreement while she was driving in Eunice.

Major LeBlanc says Viges had claimed that people in an older model truck had kidnapped the little boy as she was attending to a flat tire. Investigators determined that story to be bogus.

LeBlanc says Viges made no effort to chase after her young son.

Viges was arrested on three charges – cruelty to juveniles, child desertion and false swearing for the purpose of violating public health or safety. Her bond is set at 200-thousand dollars.

The bill passed on an 87-12 vote, with only Democrats voting against it. Cutting state income taxes will reduce state revenues by hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Landry administration is seeking to offset the revenue loss by taxing services currently not taxed and renewing a temporary sales tax that expires next year. But New Orleans Representative Mandie Landry says none of those bills have passed…

Saturday night’s loss to Alabama was the worst loss the Tigers have suffered since Brian Kelly took over as head coach of LSU. There are concerns among the fan base on whether Kelly can make the Tigers a championship contender. Kelly tried to reassure fans on Monday that the program is headed in the right direction…

The seventh ranked LSU women’s basketball team had an easy time beating Charleston Southern today as the final score was 117 to 44 in the annual field trip game. Aneesah Morrow had 21 points and 20 rebounds and Flaue’Jae Johnson surpassed one-thousand points in her career by scoring 18 points.

A federal judge has blocked Louisiana from implementing a law that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public classroom by January first. Judge John deGravelles says the law is unconstitutional on its face. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says they will appeal. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says it’s likely this case will reach the U-S Supreme Court…

The Louisiana House has approved bills today to cut Louisiana’s state income tax to a flat three percent rate and a measure to abolish the corporate franchise tax businesses pay. Tomorrow, the House Ways and Means Committee will debate legislation that will impose sales taxes on 41 services that are currently not taxed. Dog grooming is one of these services. NFIB state director Leah Long says many small businesses are not ready to administer this tax…

The Southeastern Conference has fined LSU 250-thousand because its fans threw bottles and other trash on the field after a face mask penalty was called against LSU in the third quarter of Saturday night’s loss to Alabama. If LSU can identify those who threw thrash on the field, they will be barred from attending another LSU athletic even this year.

The high school football playoff brackets are out and there are 208 schools who have visions of making it to the state championship game. A Federal Judge in Baton Rouge issued a temporary injunction against Louisiana’s law requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in public classrooms, preventing it from taking effect. This ruling from Judge John deGravelles, follows a lawsuit filed by parents and clergy opposing the measure. Loyola Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the endgame is getting this case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Which Louisianians could be considered for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet? U-S District Judge John deGravelles issued a ruling this morning that says Louisiana can not move forward with a law that requires public schools and universities to post the Ten Commandments in every classroom. Judge deGravelles calls Louisiana’s Ten Commandments Law facially unconstitutional. Attorney General Liz Murrill strongly disagrees with the court’s decision and plans an immediate appeal.

The spectacle is over, but questions about the tiger brought into Death Valley on Saturday night linger on. Andrew Greenstein reports.
