Grammy-winning country music star and Baskin native, Lainey Wilson is performing two sold out shows at the Monroe Civic Center this weekend.  Sean Richardson has more.

Today marks the third anniversary of the signing of the bipartisan infrastructure law. Senator Bill Cassidy, who was one of 19 Republicans who joined all 50 Democrats in voting in favor of it, said in those three years, Louisiana has received ten-billion dollars…

Cut 3 (15) “…for airport improvements.” 

Senator Cassidy says most recently, he announced more than 63-million dollars from the infrastructure law for railroad investments.

Cut 4 (14) “…62-mile network.”

Also, Jaguar Transport Holdings is receiving five-million dollars to increase the capacity of the West Memphis-based railroad, which runs through Louisiana. Cassidy says he’s proud to have secured this money for Louisiana.

Lainey Wilson, the Grammy-winning country music star and Baskin native, is performing at the Monroe Civic Center this weekend. These concerts are part of her “Country’s Cool Again Tour.”  The shows mark the final stop on her tour and promise to feature her chart-topping hits.  Discover West Monroe CEO Alana Cooper says she’s excited for the stars return home.

Cooper says both sold out shows will host a total of over 12-thousand Wilson fans and that means the local economy will see a boost over the weekend as well.

Cooper says the Monroe Civic Center typically the arena hosts religious concerts or an upcoming rising star, and are thankful to have Wilson come back home and perform at the Civic.

On Sunday, the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee starts hearing the parts of Governor Landry’s tax reform proposal that have passed in the House. Chairman Franklin Foil says that includes the measure that replaces the current income tax structure with a flat tax and a higher standard deduction.

Cut 9 (06)  “…income tax rate.”

As for making up for the loss of revenue, Landry has proposed imposing sales taxes on 41 services not being taxed. That measure has stalled in the House. Foil says those services are being taxed in other states, including those that neighbor Louisiana.

Cut 10 (12) “…strategic about it.”

The committee, however, WILL hear a measure that passed in the House that removes the sunset for the temporary 0.45–percent sales tax increase and lowers it to 0.40-percent. Foil says the biggest challenge is pleasing everyone.

The special session must wrap up by six P-M November 25th.

The LSU Tigers will try to end their two-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon when they visit the Florida Gators. Coach Brian Kelly says the team has a had a good week of practice…

LSU’s defense has struggled the last six quarters and six turnovers by quarterback Garrett Nussmeier have also been a detriment.

The Saints will try to win their second straight on Sunday as they host the Cleveland Browns. The defense put together a good performance last week in a win over Atlanta. Linebacker Demario Davis would like to see that again

The Ragin Cajuns can win a Sun Belt West title with a victory against South Alabama on Saturday. U-L Lafayette is 8-and-1 and Cajun fans believe their team should be ranked in the Top 25. But Coach Michael Desormeaux (Dez-er-mo) says that doesn’t matter when they line up against the Jaguars…

A Dequincy man has been cited for alleged deer hunting violations that include dumping deer carcasses from a bridge in the Calcasieu Parish town of Starks.  LDWF Lt. Wendel Vaughn says 62-year-old Ronald Owens was cited for failing to tag deer, failing to validate deer harvest, failing to comply with harvest card requirements and gross littering

Vaughn says that dumping carcasses improperly bring potential health and environmental issues…

Cut 16 (13) “….landfills.”

Violations carry up to a $350 each.  Gross littering up to $900, 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement program and 30 days in jail.

Owens may also face civil restitution totaling $3,249 for the replacement value of the deer.

Saints linebacker Pete Werner did not practice Wednesday and Thursday because of a hand injury. When he’s playing, the Black and Gold’s defense is better.

Best time of the year is underway in high school sports, as the football playoffs got underway last night with Evangel, Opelousas and Lake Charles College prep advancing.

Today’s top games include West Monroe at Parkway, Sam Houston visiting Zachary, Brother Martin hosting John Curtis and Buckeye will look for its first ever playoff win as they host Booker T Washington out of tNew Orleans.

The Ragin Cajuns can win a Sun Belt Conference Western Division championship tomorrow with a win over South Alabama. It would be U-L Lafayette’s fifth division title in seven years. The Cajuns were picked to finish third in the West, but Coach Michael Desormeaux says they expected to play in the Sun Belt Championship game…

The LSU Tigers will attempt to snap their two game losing streak tomorrow as the Bayou Bengals visit Florida in Gainesville. The Tigers are ranked 113th in the country in rush offense. Offensive tackle Emery Jones says they are doubling down on their effort to get the ground game going…

A 62-year-old man from DeQuincy is facing numerous charges after he allegedly dumped deer carcasses off a bridge in the town of Starks in Calcasieu Parish. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Ronald Owens admitted dumping three deer carcasses and a feral hog carcass and also admitted to agents he did not tag two of the three deer he dumped.

Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain will be in the United Kingdom for the next week…

Strain says they will take about bringing Louisiana spices to the UK.

The St. Tammany Collectors Con is tomorrow and Sunday at the Castine Center in Mandeville. Director Ben Robert (ro-bear) says they will have 150 vendors and special guests on hand…

Not a great game for Jayden Daniels last night as he threw for 191 yards, one touchdown pass and one interception as the Commanders lost to the Eagles in 26-18 in a battle for first place in the NFC East.

The LSU men’s basketball team got a nice win on the road last night beating Kansas State 76-65. Cam Carter had 20 points against his former school to lead the way.

Former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston returns to the Superdome this Sunday when the Black and Gold host the Cleveland Browns. Winston spent four seasons in New Orleans and signed with Cleveland as a free agent in the offseason and has started the last two games for the Browns. Cleveland enters the game with a 2 and 7 record, while the Saints are three and seven.

LSU starting left guard Garrett Dellinger has been ruled out for Saturday’s game at Florida. It will be the second straight game Dellinger has missed since suffering an ankle injury against Texas A-and-M. Florida quarterback D-J Lagway and running back Montrell Johnson, a New Orleans native are questionable. Kick-off Saturday is at 2:30.

It’s been a disappointing season for Louisiana Tech, but linebacker Kolbe Fields has been a bright spot. The transfer from LSU leads the team in tackles, tackles for a loss and forced fumbles. Bulldogs coach Sonny Cumbie says the former Rummel start is exactly the type of player they expected to get…

The Bulldogs will face Western Kentucky on Saturday at 11 AM. The Hilltoppers are 5-and-0 and they have one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

It’s been a struggle for LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. He’s committed six turnovers over the last six quarters. But Coach Brian Kelly says they have not considered sitting Nussmeier….

Nussmeier was having a good season, until throwing three interceptions in the second half against Texas A-and-M on October 26th. Nuss threw two more interceptions and lost a fumble against Alabama.

Heading into the season, Saints right tackle Trevor Penning was a big question mark, but he’s played well and interim Saints Coach Darren Rizzi says the former first round pick might have had his best game last week…

New Orleans hosts Cleveland this Sunday.

Louisiana Tech has a tough test this Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers are 5-and-0 in Conference USA and they have one of the top quarterbacks in the league in six-foot-six Cade Veltkamp who has thrown for nearly two-thousand yards and 19 touchdowns. Nice win for Louisiana Tech men’s basketball last night as the Bulldogs defeated UMass 76 to 66 in Long Island, New York. Point guard Sean Newman junior led the way with a season high 14 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Rough game for the Ragin Cajuns last night as U-L Lafayette lost to eighth ranked Houston 91 to 45. U-L Lafayette turned it over 23 times.

Meet the new House speaker – same as the old House speaker. House Republicans have unanimously selected Shreveport-area Congressman Mike Johnson as speaker of the 119th Congress. In a news conference, Speaker Johnson said House Republicans are unified in working on their agenda for the American people.

In 2023, Louisiana’s private sector reported 9 thousand nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, down from 21 thousand in 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Susan Schowen says Louisiana had the lowest incidence rate among 41 participating states, second only to the District of Columbia.

Schowen attributed these improvements to employer and worker commitment to safety.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths of two young women inside a home in Lake Charles. Sheriff Stitch Guillory says deputies arrived at a home and heard gunfire. That’s when they called in the SWAT team.

The women are identified as Dahlen Semar and Madison Guillory – no relation to the sheriff – and they were both 23 years old. Sheriff Guillory says it appears this was either a murder-suicide or a double-suicide.

For the second time in three years, LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has landed the nation’s top recruiting class. This time it’s for the 2025 recruiting class, as four, five-star prospects signed with the Lady Tigers on National Signing Day. Matthew Brune covers LSU for the Bengal Tiger and says high school players are drawn to Mulkey, because she’s a winner…

LSU Coach Brian Kelly says Garrett Nussmeier is still the starting quarterback for the Tigers despite committing six turnovers over the last six quarters. The mistakes have contributed to the Tigers two-game losing streak,  but Kelly says they have not considered making a change at quarterback…

Meanwhile, Florida coach Billy Napier says quarterback DJ Lagway is getting better and progressing towards playing against the Tigers on Saturday.

Saints linebacker Pete Werner did not practice yesterday because of a hand injury. Coach Darren Rizzi is hopeful Werner can play this Sunday against the Browns. Werner missed three games earlier this season because of a hamstring injury. In the seven games he’s appeared in, Werner has 43 tackles.

The Pelicans lost their sixth straight last night as they fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 106 to 88.

Eighth ranked Houston ran the Ragin Cajuns out of the gym beating U-L Lafayette 91 to 45.

Louisiana Tech improved to 3-and-0 with a 76 to 66 win over U-Mass. The Bulldogs had five players in double figures led by Amaree Abram had 19 points.

He’s thrown five interceptions and lost a fumble over the last six quarters, but Coach Brian Kelly there’s been no discussion about benching him. He says the coaching staff will continue to work Nussmeier, especially his foot work, and they’ll also try to make it easier for Nuss to go through his progressions…

LSU is at Florida on Saturday. Gators Coach Billy Napier says quarterback DJ Lagway is trending in the right direction play against the Tigers. Lagway injured his hamstring a couple of weeks ago and didn’t play last week against Texas.

Nine players were listed on the Saints injury report today ahead of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Lucas Patrick, Pete Werner, and Jamaal Williams did not practice. Cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry and center Erik McCoy were limited, but there’s optimism they will play on Sunday.

An estimated 90-thousand Louisiana retirees will benefit from legislation approved in the U-S House. The measure would eliminate the social security penalty for teachers and first responders. Public servants like them would receive their full Social security benefits earned while working outside of government. Congressman Garret Graves says the vote was 327 to 75…

The Louisiana House has approved legislation that would move Louisiana to a three-percent flat income tax. It would result in every worker receiving a tax break on income taxes, reducing state revenues by one-point-three billion dollars. The revenue loss is what concerns New Orleans Representative Mandie Landry…

The Landry wants to pay for the tax cut by expanding the sales tax base.

A bill that would drastically increase the tax rate for online sports betting from 15% to 51% has been shelved for the session. Sean Richardson says the House Ways and Means Committee still discussed the legislation…

LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has signed the nation’s number one recruiting class. All four of the signees are five-star prospects. The highest ranked prospect according to ESPN is Grace Knox, a six-foot-three forward from Las Vegas.
