One of the top high school football prospects announced his decision to play at LSU today. Riverdale defensive back Donte Jackson chose the Tigers over Georgia and U-S-C. Football analyst Mike Detillier says Jackson is a great talent…:

The five-foot-eleven cornerback from New Orleans had five interceptions in his senior and played well in the U-S Army All-American Bowl. Jackson is expected to sign with the Tigers on National Signing Day which is February. Detillier says LSU’s 2015 recruiting class also features a couple of other outstanding defensive backs in Kevin Toliver and Xavier Lewis.

In high school football coaching news…East St. John has named Alden Foster as their new head coach. Foster led the Amite Warriors to the Class Three-A Championship this past season.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis confirmed the hiring of former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and the firing Rick Reiprish, who was the director of college scouting. Loomis made the comments after watching practice at the Senior Bowl in Miami…

LSU football received a verbal commitment today from a five-star recuirt. Riverdale cornerback Donte Jackson chose the Tigers over the Georgia Bulldogs. Jackson had five interceptions for the Rebels last season, average 38 yards on kick returns and he was also outstanding on offense. Jackson said today there’s a chance he can play on both offense and defense.

LSU basketball rebounded from a tough loss on Saturday to Texas A-and-M to beat Florida last night. The loss ended the Gators 20-game SEC home winning streak. Jarell Martin had 22 points and Tim Quarterman added 15 points.

In other action last night…Sam Houston State defeated Nicholls State 62-39, McNeese State beat Abilene Christian 63-56. Desharick Guidry had 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. And Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi had its way with Northwestern State, beating the Demons 88-76.

You will be able to watch every LSU game this season, whether it’s on your computer, tablet, labtop or your TV. Most of the games will be streamed, but 20 of the 56 regular season games are set to be shown on television, whether it’s one of the ESPN channels or CST.

Southeastern Louisiana’s Bryan Bennett has been added to the South Roster of the Senior Bowl. Bennett threw for 18 touchdowns and 23-hundred yards last season for the Lions. He’s the third player from S-L-U to get a chance at playing in the Senior Bowl, which is this Saturday at 3 PM.

The Saints have reportedly fired their director of college scouting Rick Reiprish after 11 years with the club. It’s expected that former Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland will take his place.

In the NBA…the Pelicans host the Los Angeles Lakers tonight. Anthony Davis is expected to play. He missed the last two games because of a toe injury. New Orleans has a record of 20-and-21 as they’ve hit the halfway point of the season.

The Saints have reportedly added former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to their front office. Based on reports, Ireland will handle college scouting. There’s also been an addition to the coaching staff, based on media reports. Dennis Allen will serve as an assistant on defense, working with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Allen was with the Saints from 2006 to 2010. He left to become the Broncos defensive coordinator and served as a head coach for the Raiders in 2011.

And one other Black and Gold note, running back Mark Ingram has been added to the Pro Bowl roster. Ingram takes the place of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.

LSU says 53 of the 56 regular season baseball games can viewed on either SEC Network-plus, which is on the internet, or on ESPN’s family of TV channels. That includes ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN-U and the SEC Network. Seven games are also set to appear on C-S-T.

The LSU men’s basketball team will battle Florida tonight. The Tigers are trying to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year. They blew a double-digit lead to Texas A-and-M on Saturday and suffered gut-wrenching loss. Coach Johnny Jones…

The Pelicans are back home tomorrow night after a two-and-three road trip. They host the Lakers and Anthony Davis is listed as probable to play after missing the last two games with a sprained toe.

Jennings Police have arrested a 66-year-old man accused of raping three girls, all under the age of 10. Deputy Chief Danny Semmes (Sims) says their investigation began when a government agency informed them of suspicious activity regarding Clarence Bouley (Boo-lay) of Jennings being in the presence of some young children. Semmes says the girls were interviewed by the Child Advocacy Center…

He says interviews determined that Bouley engaged in inappropriate behavior with the girls, aged 6, 7, and 9. The incidents allegedly occurred in the suspect’s home where his daughter babysat the girls. Semmes says Bouley was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail on three counts of aggravated rape…

ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says it’s bewildering that Jindal continues to insist these “no-go zones” exist…

“No-go zones” are areas that have been allegedly taken over by radical Islamists where police are less likely to go in to enforce the country’s laws. Stockley says if Jindal is trying to bolster his foreign policy leading up to a presidential run, this is not the way to do it…

The US Supreme Court decides not to take up a Baton Rouge case that involves whether a priest should report allegations of sex abuse against a minor. The Diocese of Baton Rouge asked the nation’s highest court to review the case, after the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that priests should be subject to mandatory reporting laws. This case stems from a civil lawsuit filed by a Baton Rouge family against the Diocese and a priest with the church for not coming forward after a girl, who was 14 at the time, confessed that she was kissed and fondled by an adult church parishioner. President Barack Obama tonight will give a speech to the nation and the newly Republican Congress in the State of the Union Address and it’s expected he will introduce a plan to increase taxes on wealthy Americans to deliver cuts to the middle class. Mr. Obama will deliver his message beginning at 8pm. The Saints have reportedly added Dennis Allen back to their coaching staff. Allen was an assistant under coach Sean Payton from 2006 to 2010. He left to become the defensive coordinator of the Broncos and he later served as head coach of the Raiders. It’s been reported that Allen will work with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

The Saints have also reportedly hired former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to do college scouting. And one other Black and Gold note, running back Mark Ingram is heading to the Pro Bowl. He replaces Seawhawks running back Marshawn Lynch, who is getting ready to play in the Super Bowl.

In the NBA…the New York Knicks ended their 16-game losing streak by beating the Pelicans 99-92 last night. Baton Rouge native Langston Galloway had 21 points for the Knicks, while the Pels, who were without the injured Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday, were led by Tyreke Evans’ 23 points.

Big win for ULM in Lafayette last night as the Warhawks defeated the Ragin Cajuns 57-55 for their sixth consecutive win. Tylor Ongwae led the way with 13 points. U-L-M is now six-and-one in the Sun Belt, while the Cajuns fall to four and three. Shawn Long had 19 points in a losing effort.

The LSU men’s basketball team is in action tonight as they visit Florida. The Tigers are trying to bounce back from a tough loss to Texas A-and-M on Saturday. In that game, LSU led the Aggies by 13 points in the second half, but still ended up losing. Florida is 3-and-1 in league play.

The LHSAA begins holding a series of meetings today in advance of their annual convention which takes place at the end of the month. Up for discussion is the future of high school football. There’s several proposals on changing the format of the playoffs, including a suggestion to have public and private schools compete with each other again. But there’s also a proposal to split the playoffs in basketball, baseball and softball as well.

BP faces a 13-point-seven billion dollar penalty as a federal trial begins today that will determine exactly how much money the oil company will dish out in Clean Water Act fines. Associate Director of the Tulane Energy Institute, Eric Smith, says environmentalists hope the fine is 13-billion, because most of the money will go towards Gulf Coast restoration…

BP is arguing for a lower fine. In court documents, the company already says its costs associated with the oil spill have reached 42-billion.

The Louisiana Supreme Court has refused to hear convicted killer Brandon Scott Lavergne’s request for a new trial. Lavergne pleaded guility to first-degree murder in August 2012 in the death of UL Lafayette student Mickey Shunick.

With election day about nine months away, the four major announced candidates are starting to speak out about why they should be Louisiana’s next governor. Republican Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne says there are many major issues facing the state and he has a history of bringing people together to solve problems…

No one is playing better basketball in the state than the U-L-M Warhawks. They won their sixth straight last night as they went into the Cajundome and walked away with a 57-55 victory over U-L Lafayette. Tylor Ongwae had 13 points for U-L-M, while Shawn Long had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Cajuns, who have lost three straight.

In other college hoops action…Lamar dribbled past Southeastern Louisiana 57-50 and Stephen F Austin downed UNO 79-54. Southern routed Mississippi Valley 79-55 and Grambling fell to Prairie View 74-60. Tonight, LSU is at Florida, trying to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year.

The Pelicans completed a five-game road trip last night by losing to the New York Knicks, who ended a 16-game losing streak. New Orleans was without injured starters Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday in the 99-92 loss. The Pels went two-and-three on the trip and New Orleans hosts the Lakers on Wednesday.

Authorities had to close the I-210 bridge in Lake Charles due to a bomb threat this morning. State Police Sgt. Anderson says the investigation is ongoing, but they aren’t ruling out that this is all a hoax. He says their intelligence section is looking into the suspect’s background…
