Officials say the proposed cuts could result in the closing of of satellite campuses and drastic losses of academic programs and faculty on the main campus. The Baton Rouge Police Department is now saying that former LSU player and potential first round draft pick La’el Collins will not be interviewed about the murder of a pregnant woman until after the NFL draft. Cpl. Don Coppola says there has been contact between Collins and the police…

Authorities say Collins is not a suspect in the murder of 29-year-old Brittney Mills but think he may have some information that can be helpful in their investigation since the two had previously been in a relationship. Coppola says detectives would like to interview Collins as soon as possible…

The NFL Draft begins tonight and runs through Saturday. Police have yet to name a suspect in Mills’ death. Coppola says details of the meeting with Collins are up in the air at this time…

State Police announce a recent multi-state operation which resulted in the rescue of six missing or exploited children. Lt. JB Slaton says between April 14th-16th, several agencies took part in an initiative which is designed to teach troopers how to recognize at-risk children who are exploited for sexual purposes…:

Slaton says the participants in the operation included nine states and two municipalities. He says in addition to rescuing the children, the operation also saved one adult victim, made four initial arrests and launched three investigations…:

Baton Rouge police tells L-R-N that they will meet with former LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins, but that meeting will take place after the draft which concludes on Saturday. Collins was expected to be a first round pick, but he may drop out of the first round, now that police want to talk with Collins in connection with the murder of a pregnant woman. Police have said Collins is not considered a suspect.

Cornerback Jalen Collins, no relation to La’el, also has a chance to be selected in the first round, but it’s been reported Jalen failed multiple drug tests at LSU. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says Collins could be a late 1st first round pick or early second round selection as some teams are not scared off by failed drug tests…

The Saints have two first round picks, the 13th and 31st overall pick.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team won their seventh straight last night as they defeated UNO 6-3. U-L Lafayette was able to win, even ought they were outhit 10 to 4 for the game. Derek Herrington drove in two runs for the Cajuns, who begin a three game series at Appalachian State this weekend.

In other action last night…McNeese State thumped Southern 13 to 5. The Cowboys have 16 hits and shortstop Connor Lloyd drove in five runs.

ULM scored four runs in the first inning last night, but the Warhawks lost to Nicholls State 16 to 6. The Colonels scored seven runs in the 4th and 5 runs in the 8th inning. Nicholls third baseman Kyle Reese drove in five runs.

Louisiana Tech scored seven runs in the sixth inning as the Bulldogs beat Stephen F Austin 11 to 3. Taylor Nichols hit his second home run of the year and drove in 3 runs. That’s 11 straight non-conference wins for Tech, who host Texas San Antonio this weekend.

LSU begins a three-game series at Mississippi State tonight.

It’s been reported that LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins is returning to Louisiana to speak with authorities about a murder of a pregnant woman. Collins was in Chicago this morning for the NFL draft, but ESPN has reported that Collins is heading back to Baton Rouge. Corporal Don Coppola says Collins is not a suspect in the murder of 29-year-old Brittney Mills, but the two had a previous relationship and Collins could provide information to help their investigation…

It’s been reported Collins and Mills were at one time romantically involved, but police could not confirm that information.

Multiple media outlets are reporting LSU defensive tackle Mickey Johnson, who didn’t play much in Baton Rouge, is transferring to Louisiana Tech and he will be able to play for the Bulldogs next season as he’s set to graduate in August. Johnson is a four-star recruit out of St. Paul’s High School in Covington.

LSU pitchers Alex Lange and Jesse Stallings have been named to the national pitcher of the year watch list. Lange is 7-0 with a 1.86 ERA this season. Stallings leads the SEC with 11 saves and has 1-1 record with a 2.10 ERA. The Tigers left today for a three game series against Mississippi State, which starts tomorrow night.

In action tonight…Louisiana Tech will host Stephen F Austin. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-0 win over FIU. Nicholls State is set to hose ULM at six PM tonight. The Colonels are 24-16 and 1, while the Warhawks are 21-and-23. UNO is at U-L Lafayette and McNeese State visits Southern.

And last night…Tulane edged Southeastern Louisiana five to four in ten innings.

New Orleans state Representative Austin Badon is once again pushing legislation that would lessen the penalties for some marijuana possession arrests. Badon says House Bill 149 in no way legalizes marijuana for either medical or recreational use. He says the bill only brings fairness to sentencing for simple marijuana possession…

He says the bill will keep current provisions for first convictions, but lowers the penalties for second and subsequent convictions. Badon says this would bring much needed reform to Louisiana’s drug law. He adds that this measure would take simple marijuana possession out of the state’s “Three Strikes You’re Out” law…

This is the third time Badon has filed this legislation and he hopes the third time is the charm. He says the Louisiana District Attorney Association is not opposed to the bill. Badon has also reached out to the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association who vehemently opposed the measure last year…

State Police is investigating the shooting of an armed teenager in Livingston Parish early this morning. L-S-P Lt. JB Slaton says authorities responded to a 9-1-1 call of a suicidal person and when deputies arrived at the home, 19-year-old Matthew Peyronnin, was on the front porch with a shotgun raised in the direction of the officers…

Slaton says after being confronted with a weapon, a Livingston Parish Deputy fired his weapon and his bullets struck Peyronnin….

Legislation that requires sex education to be taught in seventh through 12th grade in every public  schools in Orleans Parish was approved by the House Education Committee today .New Orleans councilwoman LaToya Cantrell, a supporter of the proposed law, says comprehensive sex education needs to be mandatory…

Baton Rouge Police Corporal Don Coppola says they believe Collins may know why someone would want to shoot her…

The LSU Baseball team scored three runs in the fourth and eighth innings and went on to beat Alcorn State six to one. Danny Zardon drove in three runs. Andrew Stevenson and Chris Chinea each had two hits and seven pitchers combined to limit the Braves to two hits.

Also last night, UNO crushed Jackson State 14 to 3, and Tulane edged Southeastern Louisiana five to four in ten innings. Tyler Wilson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth inning for the walk off win for the Green Wave.

In action tonight…Louisiana Tech will host Stephen F Austin. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-0 win over FIU. Nicholls State is set to hose ULM at six PM tonight. The Colonels are 24-16 and 1, while the Warhawks are 21-and-23. UNO is at U-L Lafayette and McNeese State visits Southern.

In the high school baseball playoffs, In 3-A, Evangel Christian is the top seed, in two-A, Doyle is the number one seed, and In Class One-A, Ouachita Chrisian is the number one seed.

The House Ways and Means Committee approves three different bills that would cap the state’s film tax credit program anywhere from 150 to 223 million dollars a year. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says the state faces big cuts to higher ed and health care, it’s time to put restraints on a program that costs the state 256-million dollars this year…

Harris’ original proposal would have phased out Louisiana’s film tax incentive program. But Will French, president of the Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association, says Harris’ bill will put thousands of people out of work and not help the budget…

Harris bill was turned into a 200-million dollar cap that will be debated more by the full house.

A senate committee approves legislation that would give domestic abuse victims the ability to break a lease or get their abuser out of a home without penalty from their landlord. Scott Carwile has the story….

In other legislative news….the House Commerce Committee pulled the plug on a bill that would have given the Public Service Commission the authority to regular cable and video service providers. Supporters say it could lead to better customer service, but members on the panel say cable and video services are already regulated.

Baton Rouge police say their detectives want to speak with former LSU Tiger La’el Collins about the shooting death of a pregnant woman last week in the capitol city. 29-year-old Brittney Mills was gunned down at her home last Friday. Corporal Don Coppola says Collins is not considered a suspect in her muder, but they know he had a relationship with the woman. Coppola would not go any further about the type of relationship the two had. Collins is planning on attending the NFL Draft in Chicago, where he’s expected to be a first round pick.

Pelicans head coach Monty Williams met with the media today to wrap up the season. Williams said he’s proud the team exceeded expectations by making the playoffs. The coach did not want discuss whether he deserves a contract extension and says improving their transition defense will be at the top of their list for improvement.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis will meet with the media tomorrow.

The number one ranked LSU Tigers are back on the baseball diamond tonight to host Alcorn State. If LSU is involved in a close game tonight, coach Paul Mainieri says he won’t have second thoughts about using Jesse Stallings as his closer, even though Stallings has blown three saves in SEC play. The coach says the Colfax native has great stuff, but has trouble locating his fastball at times…

The Pelicans season is over after getting swept by Golden State in their first round playoff series. Even though New Orleans didn’t win a game in the postseason, Anthony Davis showed he’s one of the top players in the league. Davis had 36 points and 11 rebounds in the series finale…

In college football…Louisiana Tech released its post-spring depth chart and it lists Jeff Driskel or Ryan Higgins as the number one quarterback for the Bulldogs.

A nasty thunderstorm moved through Baton Rouge today, knocking down the left field and right field foul poles. But they will be able to play their regularly scheduled game against Alcorn State tomorrow. LSU is ranked number one in the five polls that were released this morning. It marks the seventh week this season the Tigers are number one in at least one poll.

The Ragin Cajuns are one of the hottest teams in Louisiana. UL Lafayette won its sixth straight yesterday beating UT-Arlington four to one. The Cajuns are now just a half game back of Georgia State for first place in the Sun Belt. U-L-L junior outfielder Kyle Clement has been named a Louisville Slugger Player of the Week. Clement was 10-for-21 at the plate with three home runs and nine RBIs.

And Southeastern Louisiana’s Jacob Seward has been named Southland Hitter of the Week. Seward was 11-for-16 at the plate last week, including a five-for-five performance against Houston Baptist. He has a 22-game hitting streak, which ties a school record.

The strong storm activity that swept through southeast Louisiana earlier today has resulted in wind damage and street flooding in the area. Frank Rivette, with the National Weather Service, says trees and power lines are down throughout the region. He says the damage caused by these storms is fairly widespread…

He says they still have to survey the area to determine if any damage was the result of tornadoes. Rivette says downpours with these storms has caused street flooding in several communities. He says the area may not be out of the woods just yet…

The family of 27-year-old Kris Beall of Pineville, who was competing in a regatta in Mobile Bay when a powerful storm capsized several sailboats, says he is among the dead. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Seth Johnson says the incident happened Saturday afternoon…

The family says Beall’s body was one of two recovered, although authorities have yet to release names of the victims. Over 100 sailboats and more than 200 people were participating in the regatta when the storm hit. Johnson says the storm was quite powerful…

Beall’s wife reported his death in a Facebook post Sunday. Four people remain missing and officials say they are focused on finding them. Johnson says the storm caught boaters by surprise…

The House Ways and Means Committee approves a bill that increases he state’s cigarette tax from 36-cents per pack to 68-cents, to match the tax rate in Mississippi. The bill’s author, Bogalusa Representative Harold Ritchie, originally proposed a tax increase of over one-dollar, but agreed to the lower tax, so the measure would be approved…

The tax proposal passed on a 11-5 vote. It’s expected to generate an estimated 67-million dollars for the state annually, which could be used towards the one-point-six billion dollar shortfall. Opposition came from convenience store owners, like former state senator Fred Hoyt…

Ritchie’s bill originally proposed a tax increase from 36-cents per pack to $1.54, which is a national average. Jack Casanova is a cigarette wholesaler and he says such an increase will have an impact on jobs and bring security concerns…

Health advocates lined up to speak in favor of a higher tax on cigarettes.  Frances Gilcreast, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, is a former smoker and told the committee about how smoking has impacted her file…
