Is the tax reform package passed by the legislature good or bad for Louisianians? It depends on who you ask. Starting on January 1st, Louisiana’s graduated individual income tax system, which has a tax rate of 4.25 percent, will go to a single three-percent rate.

To pay for the tax cut, the state’s sales tax will go from 4.45 percent to five percent.

LSU football won its first game in five weeks on Saturday. Andrew Greenstein has this report from Tiger Stadium.

According to the Louisiana Farm Bureau, a Thanksgiving dinner prepared inside your home with all the fixings will cost 45-dollars. Farm bureau spokesperson Avery Davidson says that’s 13 dollars cheaper than the national average….

Gas prices are also down compared to last year. The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.71 according to Triple-A. That’s 11-cents cheaper than a year ago. Triple-A projects a record 71.7 million people will travel by car over Thanksgiving.

The LSU football team snapped its three-game losing streak on Saturday night with 24-17 victory over Vanderbilt. In the week leading up to the game, Josh Williams, Greg Penn, Will Campbell and Garrett Nussmeier called a players-only meeting. Williams discussed the nature of the meeting after the game.

Williams had his best game of the season, rushing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 61 receiving yards.

After a hiatus of more than 20 years, Northwestern State University is restarting its rodeo program. Faculty advisor Dr. Michelle Morris, a professor of educational psychology, says a huge outpouring of support from the community led to the resumption of the program.

One of the riders that the school recruited was McKenzie Davis of Pollock, who had participated in barrel racing her entire life. She transferred from LSU-Alexandria to be part of the rodeo program at Northwestern.

The team currently consists of two members and they will compete in five rodeos each semester and the national finals are in the summer.

In other college football action on Saturday, Louisiana Tech will not be heading to a bowl game again this season after the Bulldogs lost to the Arkansas 35-14.

McNeese missed out on a winning season as Lamar scored on a touchdown pass on the final play of the game, resulting in a 6-and-6 record for the Cowboys.

Northwestern State finished a winless season with a loss to Houston Christian.

Kick-off against the Cajuns is at 11 AM. A win for U-L Lafayette and they’ll clinch the Sun Belt West Title and would play either Marshall or James Madison in the Sun Belt title game.

In the NFL yesterday, Dallas ended its five-game losing streak with a wild win over Washington 34 to 26. Commanders quarterback Jaydyn Daniels threw an 86-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left, but Washington missed the extra point to tie the game.

The LSU men’s basketball team won in triple overtime yesterday beating U-C-F 107 to 102. The Tigers trailed by 20 points in the first half.

The tax reform special session ended Friday and tax changes will take place on January 1st. Starting on the first day of 2025, Louisiana’s graduated individual income tax system, which has a top rate of 4.25 percent, will go to a single three-percent rate.

This year, you can host a Thanksgiving feast for ten for relatively little money. Avery Davidson with the Louisiana Farm Bureau says the price of Thanksgiving dinner has gone down this year.

Furthermore, that’s more than 12 dollars less than the national average. Davidson says that low cost is spurred in large part by a drop in the price of turkeys.

Davidson says part of the reason for our comparatively low price is the fact that it costs less to transport the goods to your local supermarkets.

For the first time in more than a month, LSU is in the win column. The Tigers beat Vanderbilt Saturday night, 24-17, snapping a three-game losing streak. Adding to the turmoil of a three-game losing streak that took LSU out of playoff contention was the news days earlier that they lost the nation’s top recruit, quarterback Bryce Underwood, to Michigan. After the game, Coach Brian Kelly said he’s proud of how his team tuned out all the chatter and focused on the job at hand.

LSU simplified its defense. Defensive End Bradyn Swinson, who assisted on four tackles and one sack, said that game plan paid off.

The state Legislature has approved a major change to Louisiana’s tax laws, which will result in a cut in income taxes in exchange for higher sales taxes. Jeff Palermo has the story…

Early voting is underway in the December 7th election. Joel Watson with the Secretary of State’s office says what’s unique about this early voting period is that it goes straight through Thanksgiving; and as such, there are some days when the polls will be closed.

Watson says turnout is expected to be low, which would be unfortunate since everyone will have something on their ballot.

Watson says the Baton Rouge mayor’s race may be the highest profile runoff race, but it’s not the only high-profile item on the ballot.

A prison escapee’s run for freedom comes to an end. 20-year-old Jamarcus Cyprian escaped from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail back on May 16th; and on Wednesday, he was arrested at an apartment complex in Hammond. Cyprian was serving time for armed robbery. Sheriff Gerald Sticker says deputies were executing a search warrant in connection with a shooting at another apartment complex, in which he was identified as a person of interest.

Sheriff Sticker says Cyprian was going to great lengths to change his appearance so that he would not get caught.

Cut 7 (07) “…of his hair.”

Sticker says Cyprian was traveling out of and back to Louisiana during his six months on the lam.

And Sticker says Cyprian was likely committing several crimes in Dallas during the times he went to that city. It was ten days before jail employees realized that Cyprian was gone, only discovering this after three other inmates escaped. Those three were quickly recaptured.

A Rapides Parish Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after being shot by a patient at a psychiatric treatment facility. Tommy Carnline with the sheriff’s office says there was a disturbance between the patient and hospital employees, and the patient started fighting with a deputy who was trying to de-escalate the situation.

Carnline says both the deputy and the suspect were taken to hospitals.

Carnline says this could have ended much worse for everyone involved.

Louisiana lawmakers have approved a tax reform package that will result in lower income taxes for working individuals, but a higher state sales tax rate. The individual income tax rate would be a flat three-percent rate. The standard deduction would triple $12,500 dollars. Leesville Senator Mike Reese says this tax change will help grow the economy…

Most Democrats also supported the tax code overhaul, even though the state sales tax rate will increase from 4.45 percent to five percent for the next five years. Lafayette Senator Gerald Boudreaux is the Chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus

The cut in income taxes would result in a one-point-three billion dollar annual loss in revenue. The state will get most of that back by raising the state sales tax to five percent. Also getting approved on Friday, charging state and local sales taxes for streaming services and online games.

The film tax credit program has been capped at 125-million dollars, down from 150-million. Legislators also voted to repeal the corporate franchise tax. Foil says this tax penalized businesses

The tax section of Louisiana’s constitution has also been changed, which will require voter approval in March.

The nation’s top high school quarterback in the Class of 2025 is no longer planning on attending LSU. Bryce Underwood decommitted from LSU and committed to Michigan after accepting their reported 12-million dollar NIL deal spread across several seasons. LSU’s offer was reportedly 1.5 million a year. The early signing period begins December fourth, so it will be difficult for the Tigers to find another elite quarterback in this recruiting class.

On a 38-and-1 to vote the Louisiana Senate approved a bill that would raise the state’s sales tax from 4.45 percent to five percent for the next five years. While the state sales tax will increase, Louisiana residents will see their income taxes go down to a flat three percent and the standard deduction would grow from 45-hundred dollars to 12,500 dollars.

It’s been a rough month for the LSU football program and it got worse yesterday as the nation’s top recruit for next season, quarterback Bryce Underwood, decommitted from the Tigers and will instead play for the Wolverines. Executive Editor of Tiger Rag Todd Horne says Underwood’s move came down to just one thing – money.

LSU’s NIL offer was a reported one-point-five million dollars a year.

On the field, the Tigers will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they host a Vanderbilt team that’s having its best season in years. The Commodores are 6-and-4 overall, 3-and-3 in the SEC.

The Ragin Cajuns host Troy tomorrow afternoon. Chandler Fields will start at quarterback for the injured Ben Woolridge. McNeese Coach Gary Goff is not saying who will start at quarterback when the Cowboys host Lamar tomorrow night.

ULM needs one more win to be bowl eligible. Coach Bryant Vincent’s team will try to get it done tomorrow against Arkansas State….

There’s a strong belief the tax reform special session will come to an end with lawmakers approving a plan that will lower individual income taxes, but increase the state sales tax from 4.45 percent to five percent for at least five years. Legislators would also repeal the corporate franchise tax.

Governor Jeff Landry says a three-billion dollar coastal restoration project, , would break parts of Louisiana’s culture. Landry appeared before the Senate Transportation Committee expressing concern the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion would hurt commercial shrimping and oyster growing in southeast Louisiana. But Amanda Moore, senior director of the gulf program for the National Wildlife Federation, disagrees with Landry’s assertion…

The Alliance for Affordable Energy has concerns about Entergy’s proposed plans to build three natural gas power plants to support a proposed five billion dollar Artificial Intelligence Data Center in Richland Parish.
