Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Angelle has a new TV ad out. It’s called “I’m Ready” and it highlights his plans to ramp up the state’s workforce development programs. So far Angelle has been the only candidate in the governor’s race to release television ads.

A candidate for the state House of Representatives plans to appeal a judge’s ruling that says he can’t list himself as a republican and democrat on the October 24th ballot. Judge David Arceneaux ruled that it would create confusion for the voter. But Houma Attorney Damon Baldone, a candidate for House District 52, disagrees…

ULM football released a depth chart today and it has Garrett Smith as the first string quarterback. Smith is a redshirt freshman from Spring Branch, Texas. In his senior season at Smithson Valley High School, he threw for nearly 21-hundred yards, 21 touchdowns and he was intercepted three times. He also rushed for 685 yards and 11 scores.

UL Lafayette Coach Mark Hudspeth says the battle to be the starting quarterback for the Ragin Cajuns is down to two players, but he’s not saying which two. Hudspeth plans to keep it a secret on who will be the starting QB for the season opener at Kentucky.

The Kentucky Wildcats have named a starting QB. Patrick Towles beat out freshmand Drew Barker. Towles started alst season as a sophomore and threw for 27-hundred yards and 14 touchdowns.

Elsewhere in the SEC…Alabama quarterback Jake Coker will miss the next few days because of a minor foot injury. Arkansas running back Jonathan Williams will miss the entire 2015 regular season, because he’ll undergo foot surgery.

A state district judge has thrown out the lawsuit of a candidate for the State House of Representatives who wanted to be listed as both Democrat and Republican on the ballot. Houma attorney Damon Baldone filed the suit after the Terrebonne Parish registrar of voters listed his party affiliation as “other”. Baldone feels he has the Constitutional right to register with both parties…

Baldone argues the registrar’s decision violates his freedom of speech and his right to associate with any group. In the judge’s dismissal of the suit, he stated that Baldone was not being deceptive; however, a double listing could confuse voters. Baldone disagrees with that claim…

The Terrebone Parish Sheriff’s Office says a woman is facing many charges after going on a tirade against her ex-boyfriend and several others in Houma. Captain Dawn Foret says they received 911 calls regarding 25-year-old Miranda Riley of Dularge ramming her vehicle into other cars and trying to fight with multiple people while armed with a knife:

Foret says as deputies detained Riley they learned from a neighbor that there was a fire on the front porch of the victim’s trailer which had not yet spread into the house…:

Louisiana chef Jay Ducote was not the big winner last night on this season’s Food Network Star, but he remains optimistic about the future. The title went to former NFL player Eddie Jackson. Ducote found out along with everyone else that he is the runner-up on the cooking competition’s 11th season. He says his first reaction was extreme disappointment…:

27-year-old William Jabour is charged with 49 counts of monetary instrument abuse. Anderson says casino personnel is well trained to detect counterfeit money and there are several precautions in place…

He says their investigation uncovered several counterfeit $50 and $100 bills in Jabour’s possession and in his vehicle. Monetary instrument abuse is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a million dollar fine, and the offender is required to make full restitution. With 19 days to go before the season opener, sophomore Brandon Harris has the edge over Anthony Jennings in the quarterback battle at LSU. Harris took more snaps than Jennings with the first unit during a scrimmage on Saturday night. Louisiana Tech is mourning the death of track and field student-athlete Noah Riche. The 22-year-old, who was a javelin thrower, was killed in an automobile accident in Arkansas after working at a Christian children’s camp at Camp Ozark. The Madisonville native was also an engineering major at Tech.

ULM announces that this Saturday will be Fan apperciation night. The Warhawks are set to hold a scrimmage at JPS Field at Malone Stadium at six-thirty and then after the scrimmage, there will be a meet and greet with the players.

The Pelicans have announced they will hold training camp at the Greenbrier in While Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, the same place the Saints currently hold training camp. The Pelicans 2015 training camp will take place at the Greenbrier from September 29th to October 2nd.

And the Saints have reportedly signed former Ragin Cajuns linebacker Justin Anderson. The Foley, Alabama, native played in two games with the Giants last year.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is promoting the Catch and Cook Program, which allows anglers to bring their catch to a local restaurant and be prepared by a chef. Franklin Senator Bret Allain says this is a great opportunity to promote Louisiana’s recreational fishing industry.

The Catch and Cook Program started last year as a result of a bill authored by Allain. He says the way the program works, if you catch a fish, clean it and bring it to a participating restaurant within six days of being caught.  He says the dish will only be served to the person who brought the catch in and their guests.

The department of wildlife and fisheries says they have 14 restaurants who have signed on to the program including Galatorie’s in the French Quarter. Allain says it doesn’t cost a restaurant anything to participate in the program and they can charge the guest any amount they choose for the prepared dish.

Legal experts anticipate the debate over the Confederate monuments in New Orleans will go on for years and years. The legislative process of removing 4 statues from their current location has started. New Orleans Attorney Tim Meche says there are several legal impediments to taking the monuments down…:

Meche says not only will there be legal issues with moving the monuments, but political grandstanding will also play a heavy hand in the direction of this matter. He says, in addition, there’s the question of how much this will cost and who is going to pay for it…:

Mayor Mitch Landrieu started the conversation about moving the Robert E Lee statue from Lee Circle during a national conversation about Confederate symbols in late June. Governor Bobby Jindal opposes taking the monuments down saying he’s looking into the Heritage Act to see if he has the legal authority to stop it. Meche doesn’t think so…:

The Obama Administration has approved limited crude oil trading with Mexico. President of the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association Don Briggs says this is good for the industry because it helps with the balance of trade after the banning of crude oil exports since the 70’s.

Briggs says this is a good step forward to possibly opening the doors to the US trading with other countries. He hopes this could be a reaction from the Obama administration due to oil prices being so low and the high demand to allow for exporting crude oil.

Briggs says there is no reason for the US to be excluded from trade and it’s time to be involved in the open and free market. He says this would have a tremendous impact on oil and gas companies in the country.

State lawmakers have learned the budget shortfall for the next fiscal year is already projected at 713 million dollars. Director of the Louisiana Budget Project Jan Moller says it’s not a surprise we’re looking at a big deficit but we’re in better shape than we were a year ago, when the deficit reached 1.6 billion dollars.

Moller says it’s good to see that the four gubernatorial candidate have acknowledged the state’s budget problems.

The Jindal administration had said that they would use the “Heritage Act” to prevent the removal of four confederate monuments in New Orleans. But the Baton Rouge Advocate reports there’s no such thing as the “Heritage Act” on the state’s books. It’s expected the New Orleans City Council will consider removing the monuments after the city’s landmark’s commission voted that the statues should be taken down.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says law enforcement was searching for a body under the I-10 bridge this week in Lake Charles. He says no human remains were found, but the search began after a credible informant told authorities that 35-year-old Gammion McCloud of Phoenix Arizona killed someone then tossed them over the bridge…:

McCloud is facing charges for rape in a separate case out of Calcasieu Parish.

State Police say a 7-year-old girl was killed in a Grant Parish crash. Trooper Scott Moreau says, 26-year-old Kristopher Silk of Pollock, was speeding when he crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler going in the same direction on Hwy 165. The 7 year old front seat passenger died in the crash..:

Jim Harris has been named as the first executive director of the Ragin Cajuns Athletics Foundation, which is the official fundraising arm for UL Lafayette. Harris most recently worked at South Florida, where he was successful in raising cash.

He says after meeting up, Wilson took the girl to the Naval Air Station in Belle Chasse where he was making a delivery…

State Police say a young girl was killed in Grant Parish after being involved in a high speed collision. Master Trooper Scott Moreau says, 26-year-old Kristopher Silk of Pollock, was speeding when he crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler going in the same direction on Hwy 165.

7-year-old Adrein Silk was pronounced dead. Moreau says the driver, Kristopher Silk received minor injuries. He says crashes like this are highly uncommon.

Moreau says they’re unsure if Silk was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the accident but routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. He says if the child was properly restrained, her life might’ve been saved. The crash investigation is ongoing.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says the crime scene authorities had been searching under the I-10 bridge this week was related to a body dumping case — but it’s now clear. He says no human remains were found, but the search began after a credible informant told authorities that 35-year-old Gammion McCloud of Phoenix Arizona killed someone then tossed them over the bridge…:

Mancuso said they already had a warrant for rape out on McCloud in connection with a 2014 incident in which he allegedly continually raped and beat a woman at a local motel in front of a young child. He says there is plenty of evidence that McCloud dumped a body in 2013 but it could have been washed away…:

McCloud, who was arrested in Oregon this week on unrelated charges, will be extradited back to Calcasieu and arrested with one count of aggravated rape, 1 count of aggravated incest and 2 counts of second degree battery. It was not a good debut for the Saints, who lost to Baltimore 30-27 in last night’s preseason opener. The defense was supposed to be better this year, but the starting unit allowed Baltimore to march down the field for an 80-yard touchdown scoring drive to open up the game. The Saints also committed 16 penalties.

If you’re looking for a positive. The young quarterbacks played well. Ryan Griffen threw for 112 yards and one touchdown and Garrett Grayson was 8 of 12 for 87 yards. Drew Brees did not play in this one, we’ll see if he gets any action in preseason game number two, which is August 22nd at home against the Patriots.

Saints cornerback Brandon Browner was carted off the field during last night’s game. But according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, Browner is fine, but it’s unclear how long the injury will keep him on the sidelines. Browner left the game after taking a hit to his right knee. Dannell Ellerbe also left the game with an injury. It’s been reported he re-aggravated a toe injury.

The battle for starting quarterback at LSU is getting the most headlines during the Tigers preseason camp. Brandon Harris appears to have the lead in that battle over Anthony Jennings. Another position battle is at field goal kicker. Colby Delahoussaye was the place kicker for much of the 2014 season, but struggled late in the year. Coach Les Miles says Trent Domingue from Mandeville is battling Delhoussaye for that role…

Jim Harris has been named the new executive director of the Ragin Cajuns Athletic Foundation. Harris will lead fundraising efforts as UL Lafayette is in the middle of a 115-million dollar athletic facilities upgrade. The program has been without a chief fundraiser the last two years.

There’s been a lot of discussion across the state this summer about confederate monuments. There was a lengthy hearing about that subject in New Orleans today and the city’s Historic District Landmarks Commission voted to remove four confederate monuments from where they currently stand. The proposal still needs city council approval.

The Jindal Administration has added tracking devices to state vehicles as a way to monitor employee driving habits. Jan Cassidy, assistant commissioner for procurement, believes the GPS will make state workers more responsible drivers…:

The program is expected to save the state $30 million over the next five years in fuel, maintenance, and insurance cost reductions.

The Louisiana Lottery Corporation’s revenue is up for the 5th consecutive year as it ended its 2015 fiscal year with 453 million dollars which is more than 3 million dollars from the prior year. Lottery Spokesperson Kim Chopin says they’re excited about this progress because it benefits the state.
