There’s good and bad news on the state of labor in Louisiana on this Labor Day. The Louisiana Budget Project says between 2012-2014, median wages have increased 39 cents. LBP Director Jan Moller says while we have more people working in the state than ever before, but the gap between the number of low income residents and wealthy individuals continues to get bigger….

Moller says we’re also losing jobs in the construction industry and manufacturing.

According to a recent LSU AgCenter report, in 2013 feral hogs caused more than $74 million dollars in farm damage here. The research was conducted by AgCenter Economist Shaun Tanger. He says that number is just based on reports from farmers and doesn’t even include non-farm land damage:

The Agcenter estimates the feral hog population at 500-thousand.

Franklin Parish remains in shock over the death of 16-year-old Tyrell Cameron, who lost his life from an apparent broken neck sustained while playing football on Friday night. Matt Reynolds is the play-by-play man for the Franklin Parish Patriots and says Cameron was covering a punt and ran into a Sterlington player who was blocking for the returner…:

Cameron was died shortly after the fatal hit. Franklin Parish’s next game is against Wossman and the game has been moved up to Thursday.

The Calcasieu parish Sheriff’s office says a fight between two roomates left one person dead and the other facing charges of manslaughter. Deputies say 64-year-old Randall Austin fatally shot 40-year-old Sidney “Jody” Joseph during a struggle with a shotgun. Austin is in the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

Franklin Parish is still trying to get over the shock of a high school football player dying after apparently breaking his neck during a game on Friday night. A vigil was held for 16-year-old Tyrell Cameron on Saturday at Franklin Parish High School and Matt Reynolds with KMAR radio says it was great to see Franklin Parish support the team and Cameron’s family…

And LSU football coach Les Miles agrees with the decision on cancelling Saturday night’s McNeese State game because of lightning. The decision was made around 10:30 and Miles says there was no sense in trying to resume the game around midnight…

The state department of health and hospitals announces that there’s been three cases of salmonella in Louisiana that’s part of a 27-state oubreak. The culprit is cucumbers from Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego. DHH says they’ve been working with restaurants and grocery stores to make sure these cucumbers are thrown out.

There is mixed news for the workers of Louisiana on this Labor Day. The Louisiana Budget Project found that wages for workers in the state have finally started to turn upwards, with the median wage rising to $15.63 an hour, a 39-cent increase from 2012 to 2014. L-B-P Director Jan Moller says with the good news, there is also some bad news to report.

Moller says we’re not doing nearly enough to improve the lives of workers across Louisiana. He says we have more people working in the state than ever before, yet these large pay gaps continue to get bigger.

To conclude our series of questions to the gubernatorial candidates, we asked them how they would work with state agencies to reduce the number of sexually transmitted diseases. Louisiana has some of the highest STD rates in the country. Senator David Vitter says education is the first step to lowering these numbers.

Republican Scott Angelle believes Louisiana suffers from such high STD rates because we’re failing to educate children. He says parents should have the birds and the bee’s conversation at home but sex education should also be taught in public schools.

Republican Jay Dardenne says problem needs to be addressed through increased awareness, testing and treatment. He says the areas experiencing the highest rates of STDs are Louisiana’s bigger metropolitan cities, which also are at an increased risk for human trafficking.

Democrat John Bel Edwards says healthcare access is crucial to reducing the rate of HIV, AIDS and STDs, as well as, treating those already infected. He says educating the public on prevention is key to stop the spread of more diseases.

The additional 21-million in non-production losses includes replanting costs and damage to pastures and levees. Tanger says since the feral hog population continues to grow, so will the amount of damage

The LSU AgCenter estimates Louisiana’s feral hog population at a half-million, with heavier concentrations in the south-central and northeastern regions of the state. He says this study is based on a survey of Louisiana farmers, so it doesn’t account for damage to non-farm land

There’s no LSU game from Saturday to react to on this Labor Day. The Tigers and McNeese State played a handful of snaps, when lightning near the stadium halted the contest. The decision to cancel the game, came just after 10:30 after the teams waited nearly four hours for the lightning to stop. Coach Les Miles says there was no sense in trying to resume the game at around midnight

Saturday’s cancelled game will not be made up. McNeese will still receive a 500-thousand dollar game check from LSU. Miles is not sure how this will impact the team, if they are a candidate to play in the four-team college football playoff and they only played eleven games, while everyone else played 12

LSU is now getting ready for Mississippi State, without the benefit of having a full game under their belt. But Miles says the Tigers will be ready for the Bulldogs…

A sophomore on the Franklin Parish Patriots football team died last night after taking a hit while returning a punt in the fourth quarter of a game against Sterlington. It’s been reported that the hit broke the neck of Tyrell Cameron. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died. Franklin Parish high school is asking for prayers for his family.

There are some who say LSU can be one of the four teams in the college football playoffs. We’ll see how they look tonight when they host McNeese State in the season opener. Coach Les Miles says the players believe they can compete with anyone…

Sad story out of Winnsboro today as a Franklin Parish football player died after he was injured while returning a punt in a high school game against Sterlington. Sophomore Tyrell Cameron was taken off the field on a stretcher and died at a local hospital. Franklin Parish High School sent out a tweet that said Tyrell will live on in the memory of those who loved him.

In Winnsboro last night, a high school football player died after reportedly breaking his neck after taking a hit while returning a punt. Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore for the Franklin Parish Patriots, was rushed to a local hospital where he passed away from his injury. The school is asking for Louisiana residents to pray for his family.

It’s been a tough year for Louisiana law enforcement, as six officers have been fatally shot while on duty. But a Baton Rouge waitress showed her support for the men in blue by buying lunch for three BRPD officers and her kind note to the policemen has gone viral on facebook. Lt. Johnny Dunham with Baton Rouge police says it’s nice to be reminded there are people who side with law enforcement…

A state judge is putting the City of New Orleans on notice and threatening to place Mayor Mitch Landrieu on house arrest if they don’t cough up firefighters back pay. The city’s firefighters union claims New Orleans owes them more than $140 million dollars. Landrieu says that kind of money would cripple the city…:

Previously, the city reportedly offered to pay $15 million up front and the remaining balance over the next 30 years, but that offer was rejected.

LSU hosts McNeese State tonight in the college football opener in Tiger Stadium. The Cowboys athletic program receive 500-thousand dollars to play in this game. McNeese Coach Matt Viator says it’s also an awesome opportunity for his players….

Tragedy struck at a high school football game in Winnsboro last night, as Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore for Franklin Parish, died from injuries he sustained while returning a punt in a game against Sterlington. Cameron was taken off the field on a stretcher in the fourth quarter and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The school tweeted out that Tyrell will live in the memory of those who loved him. They asked asked for prayers for his family.

Today is the first Saturday of the college football season. At six-thirty tonight in Tiger Stadium, LSU will host McNeese State. The Cowboys nearly upset Nebraska in Lincoln last year, but McNeese Coach Matt Viator says playing in Baton Rouge will be a bigger test for his team….

For LSU, sophomore Brandon Harris will start his first game at quarterback at home.

ULM is a big underdog heading into today’s game against ninth ranked Georgia. The Bulldogs are a 35-point favorite. In 2012, the Warhawks opened the season with a win over Arkansas. Georgia has a new starter at quarterback, Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert.

UL-Lafayette and Kentucky face off for the first time ever at six o’ clock in Lexington. The Cajuns have never defeated a team who plays in the SEC. Louisiana Tech opens its season by hosting Southern. The Jaguars are 0-7 against FBS schools. Southern will have its hands full with Tech running back Kenneth Dixon who is the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns.

Louisiana Tech’s former coach, Sonny Dykes, begins his third season at Cal by hosting Grambling State. The Tigers have lost all 13 games they’ve played against FBS teams since 1996. Cal has won 11 of its last 13 home openers. Kick-off is at 4 PM.

In the NFL…the Steelers traded former LSU punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants. Former Louisiana Tech star IK Ememkpali was cut by the Buffalo Bills.

A state judge has held the City of New Orleans in contempt of court over their dispute with firefighters over back pay — even threatening Mayor Mitch Landrieu with house arrest. Landrieu says he will accept the sentence because the money the firefighters are asking would cripple the city and he plans to appeal…:

The firefighters claim the city owes them $75 million in back wages plus $67 million in interest.

With the college football season starting, LSU’s only Heisman Trophy winner, Billy Cannon, has a new book out about his life. It gives insight to his two and half years in federal prison for his part in a counterfeiting money scheme and how that time changed his life…

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office says four workers at Renewable Energy Group, or REG, sustained injuries as a result of an explosion during the over night hours at the bio-diesel plant in Geismar. Sheriff Jeff Wiley says an initial investigation revealed a hydrogen line under maintenance had become pressurized…:
