It’s another big day on the recruiting front for the Fighting Tigers football program as five-star defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence of Neville High School in Monroe announced he plans on attending LSU. Louisiana Tech announces that it’s home opener in football for the 2016 season will be South Carolina State on September 10th. The Bulldogs are an F-C-S school and went seven and four last season. Tech begins its regular season at Arkansas on September 3rd.

We have tornado watches posted in south Louisiana and winter weather advisories for the northern parishes as a strong cold front will bring the bayou state a little bit of everything over the next 12 to 16 hours. South Louisiana Serial killer Derrick Todd Lee died today at a hospital in Baton Rouge. Lee has been hospitalized for the last several days and his cause of death is unknown at this time. John Sinquefield prosecuted his capital murder case in Baton Rouge…

The LSU Professor who was fired for allegedly creating a hostile learning environment by cussing and making sex jokes says she’s suing the university. Teresa Buchanan feels she was wrongfully fired for what she calls “expressing academic freedom.” She says it’s a professor’s job to stimulate students thinking and to get them to question assumptions…:

Leaders of the state’s public univerisities and colleges have told Governor John Bel Edwards that they can not sustain anymore cuts. The Edwards administration is developing solutions to deal with a 750-million dollar budget shortfall this fiscal year and Higher Ed Commissioner Joseph Rallo says they are bracing for what might happen…

Four star offensive lineman Will Allen from John Curtis High School has given his verbal commitment to sign with LSU. Allen is considered one of the state’s top prospects and one of the top offensive linemen in the nation. His verbal pledge moves LSU back to number one in some of the recruiting rankings. Tomorrow, the Tigers will find out if Neville defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence plans on attending LSU.

UL Lafayette has named Lewis Caralla as its new head strength and conditioning coach. Caralla was the director of strength and conditioning at North Texas and has also spent time at Michigan, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech.

In college basketball tonight…UL Lafayette begins a five-game homestand when they take on Sun Belt rival South Alabama. ULM is unbeaten at home this season and they’ll host Troy tonight.

In the NBA…the Pelicans host the Detroit Pistons. Tip-off is at 7 PM.

Changes have been made to LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri’s staff. LSU assistant Will Davis is leaving the program immediately to be an assistant at Lamar. It was previously announced that Davis would serve as the head coach at Lamar in 2017. Former LSU pitcher Nolan Cain will replace Davis on Mainieri’s staff. And it’s being reported that former Tigers catcher Micah Gibbs will be the new coordinator of baseball ops.

Former LSU baseball star Todd Walker has been elected to the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame. Walker was a standout baseball player at Airline High School in Bossier City and during his senior season, they lost just one game…

LSU has added another four-star prospect to its 2016 football recruiting class. John Curtis offensive lineman Willie Allen announced his decision this morning to attend LSU. He’s listed at six-foot-seven, 300 pounds. ESPN has hhim as the second ranked prospect at his position and 16th overall. Allen also visited Georgia and TCU.

In college basketball tonight…UL Lafayette begins a five-game homestand tonight when they take on Sun Belt rival South Alabama. The Cajuns have won eight straight at home. UL Lafayette is looking to improve on its 7-8 record, 3-3 in conference play.

ULM is unbeaten at home this season and they’ll host Troy tonight. The Warhawks are 2-4 in league play, while the Trojans are 1-5.

A former personal assistant to Saints and Pelicans Owner Tom Benson accuses Mr. Benson’s wife, Gayle, of racial discrimination. The accusations have been made by Rodney Henry in a filing with a federal court. Henry says Gayle treated him with disdain and disrespect. But the Saints deny these allegations in a statement and it goes on to say that Tom and Gayle are extremely hurt by Henry’s court filing.

The Pelicans will be without shooting guard Eric Gordon for the next four to six weeks after he broke his ring finger in last night’s win over Minnesota. Gordon is averaging 15 points a game and has yet to miss a game up until this point.

The LSU men’s basketball team is looking to rebound after losing last night to 10th ranked Texas A-and-M. Quiet night for Ben Simmons as he had just 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers will now get ready to play Alabama this Saturday. The Crimson Tide are 1-4 in league play.

Southeastern Louisiana has announced its football schedule for the upcoming season. The Lions kick-off the year against Oklahoma State on September third and their home opener is against Northwestern State on September 24th.

The Ragin Cajuns have set a new season ticket record for baseball as over 27-hundred season tickets have been sold for this year. UL Lafayette has been ranked in the top ten in a couple of preseason polls and they open the season on February 19th at home against Sam Houston State.

Former Ragin Cajun, Jonathan Lucroy, is seeking a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers. The veteran catcher says he’s not interested in playing with a team that’s rebuilding.

Governor John Bel Edwards has offered several options to the state legislature to address the state’s budget crisis. House Majority Leader, Republican Lance Harris of Alexandria, says the delegation is still studying the governor’s plan. He says House Republicans will work on their own plan to deal with the fiscal mess in the coming weeks…

Harris says he appreciates the governor being so candid about the budget numbers. Governor Edwards has proposed a one-cent hike in the state’s sales tax. In regards to that, Harris says you have to look at everything in its entirety and he just hasn’t had time to form an opinion on the issue…

The current, sharp drop in the price of oil is having an adverse effect on the state’s budget. This morning the price of crude oil dropped below $27 a barrel. Louisiana Budget Project Director Jan Moeller says diminishing mineral revenues are doing a real number on the budget…

Projected oil revenues are used in creating the state budget. He says the budget has already been adjusted twice because of declining oil prices and may have to be adjusted again. Moeller says not only are shrinking mineral revenues hurting the budget, oil field layoffs are as well…

Noble Drilling has announced a layoff of 100 to 120 employees due to the anticipated shutdown of a rig offshore. Moeller says the massive drop in oil prices is a very serious problem across the board in Louisiana…

A New Orleans woman has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of her 3-year-old grandson. New Orleans Police says 43-year-old Deonca Kennedy first reported that the gun was under her pillow and went off hitting the child in the chest — then refused to cooperate with police or give a statement. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says the police should’ve done more testing before filing charges…

Kennedy has been charged with negligent homicide and second degree cruelty to a juvenile. Meche says a variety of tests will be conducted to find out how the gun was fired…

Meche says there needs to be more investigating as to who owned the firearm and why it was there. He says in some New Orleans neighborhoods having a loaded gun in your home isn’t uncommon.

The LSU men’s basketball team shot the ball poorly in the second half and lost to 10th ranked Texas A-and-M 71-57 last night to fall to 4-2 in SEC play. The Tigers shot 32-percent from the field in the second half. It was a quiet game for Ben Simmons as he had 10 points, eleven rebounds, but also had four turnovers. The Tigers host Alabama this Saturday.

In other action last night…UConn clobbered Tulane 60-42, Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi downed Northwestern State 89-79 and Abilene Christian dribbled past McNeese State 75-67.

In the NBA…the Pelicans started their seven-game homestand with a win over Minnesota, beating the Timberwolves 114-99. Big night for Anthony Davis as he had 35 points and seven rebounds, but shooting guard Eric Gordon fractured a bone in his ring finger and he’ll miss the next four to six weeks.

In football recruiting news…Mr. Football in 2015, Zachary quarterback Lindsey Scott, has received an offer from LSU. He’s also been offered by Maryland, Navy, Army and Rutgers. Neville defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence will announce on Friday if he’ll attend LSU or Ohio State.

LSU is 4-1 in SEC play, but they face its biggest road test in conference play tonight as they visit Texas A-and-M. The Aggies are 15-2, 5-0 in the league and ranked 10th in the latest AP Top 25 poll. A&M beat the Tigers twice last season and they’ll start four seniors tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00.

The Pelicans begin a seven-game homestand tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves. If New Orleans is going to get back into the race for a playoff spot, this where they can make up some ground. They trail Utah by 4-and-a-half-games for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Tip-off tonight against the T-Wolves is at 7 PM.

LHSAA director Eddie Bonine is meeting with principals and head coaches ahead of the association’s annual convention and many of them have questions and concerns over the news that the split playoff system in football has been terminated, because of an error made by the LHSAA. Several schools still support the split playoff system.

LSU football is set to return 18 starters from last year’s 9-3 team now that linebacker Kendell Beckwith and conrerback Tre’Davious White have decided to return for their senior seasons. Football analyst Mike Detillier gives credit to head coach Les Miles for retaining his draft eligible juniors…

In years past, LSU has seen multiple juniors skip their senior season and enter the NFL draft. This year, the Tigers will likely lose only one player and that’s offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins.

Latest financials involving the Southeastern Conference shows the league made 527-million dollars in total revenue for the fiscal year that ended August of 2015. It’s a 60-percent increase over the previous year.

Gas prices continue to fall all across Louisiana. GasBuddy-dot-com reports that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped six cents in the past week. Spokesperson Gregg Laskoski says Louisiana’s average price per gallon has fallen to $1.67…

He says the lowest gas price in the state is $1.41 a gallon reported at a location in Kenner. Laskoski says falling gas prices is becoming a nationwide trend…

The price of West Texas Intermediate crude has plunged below $30 a barrel as a result of the lifting of sanctions against Iran, which will add more oil to an already glutted market. The Department of Health and Hospitals says the worst of the current influenza season is still to come and they encourage everyone to get a flu shot. Immunization Director Dr. Frank Welch says it’s fortunate that flu season has been very slow, to date, in Louisiana. Welch thinks there’s one big reason for the slow start…

He says doctor visits for flu-like symptoms in the state are down around 50-percent from this time last year. Welch says flu activity is increasing in other parts of the country and it’s only a matter of time before it hits Louisiana…

The ex-mayor of Sorrento has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and animal cruelty charges. Spokesperson for the 23rd District Attorney’s Office Charlotte Guedry says under the plea deal Wilson Longanecker, Jr. will spend 40 years in jail.  She says the D-A’s office was ready to go to trial with a forensic veterinarian that testified in the Michael Vick case.

Guedry says Longnecker is charged with 40 counts of child porn and seven counts of animal cruelty. She says the videos found at Longanecker’s Sorrento home involved minor girls, some as young as three years old.

A Lamborghini was found completely burned outside of H and O Investments in Baton Rouge this morning. H & O Investments pulled out of a contract last week to remove Confederate monuments in New Orleans. Attorney Roy Maughan, Jr. says in recent weeks, the company owner, David Mahler, received personal death threats at home and work.

Maughan says authorities are working to determine if the fire is related to the removal of the monuments. He says Mahler believes the story isn’t about him but about what the city council of New Orleans voted to do.

Star Ragin Cajuns running back Elijah McGuire has joined the UL Lafayette men’s basketball team. Coach Mark Hudspeth says McGuire loves to compete and hopefully his addition to the team can help the Cajuns win on the basketball court.

Southeastern Louisiana won its 3rd game of the season last night as the Lions beat Lamar 98-70.

All but one draft eligible underclassmen is returning to the LSU football team as linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White said they are returning for their senior seasons. Draft Analyst Mike Detillier says he’s surprised by White’s decision to come back…

LSU offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins is the only draft eligible underclassmen that’s declared for the NFL draft, but he has not signed an agent, so he has a couple more days to decide if he wants to return to LSU.

The 2015 Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year has enrolled early into Louisiana Tech. Quarterback Jack Abraham threw for just over 5,000 yards and 57 touchdowns in his senior season at Oxford High School.
