New Orleans lawyer Caroline Fayard, who once ran for Lt. Governor, is the first Democrat to get in Louisiana’s US Senate race. Fayard joins a crowded field of republican candidates. It’s also been rumored that Democrat and Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell will also get in the race.

Governor John Bel Edwards released a column today outlining why he feels cuts to higher ed and healthcare are not the answer to the budget woes. But Republican House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry says, in the face of the $750 million dollar shortfall, nobody likes cuts but unfortunately they’re necessary…:

He believes legislators will look at cuts first and do what they can to reduce the size of government. A special session is expected to start on Valentine’s day to address the state’s budget crisis.

A six-year-old girl was killed in a three-bedroom mobile home fire in the Rapides Parish town of Deville. Her 12-year-old sister was also seriously injured in the blaze that started while the family was sleeping. Investigators believe a space heater may have caused the fatal fire.

The state department of transportation is trying to determine what other safety measures are needed at a railroad crossing in Iberia Parish that saw five people die in a train-versus-vehicle crash last December. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says their study involves observing traffic volumes, the speed of vehicles crossing the tracks and additional reports…

Mallett says gates were installed at the crossing over ten years ago and there’s also a sign warning drivers not to stop on the tracks.

The 2016 recruiting class is in the books for the LSU Tigers as they signed 19 young men that were ranked as the top 300 players in the country by ESPN. One of those players is Michael Divinity, a linebacker from John Ehret High School in Marrero. Coach Les Miles says Divinity has the physical ability to play right away…

Saints quarterback Drew Brees was making the rounds in San Francisco today, appearing as a guest on a bunch national sport talk shows. Brees says he’s still resting his injured foot, he said there’s been no contract talks between him and the team, and he believes another window of opportunity is just opening for the Saints.

Conference USA released Louisiana Tech’s 2016 football schedule today. The Bulldogs begin league play on September 24th at Middle Tennessee. After that game, they’ll host UTEP and Western Kentucky. Tech’s bye week comes on November 19th, the week before they visit Southern Miss on November 26th.

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball begins a two-game road trip in Texas today as they visit Rice. The Bulldogs have won three in a row. The Ragin Cajuns are at Appalachian State. UL Lafayette has won seven .

In the NBA….the Pelicans are back at the Smoothie King Center to host the Lakers. Kobe Bryant is questionable with a shoulder injury. Tip-off is at 7.

The plea deal entered by former Saints star Darren Sharper in New Orleans to charges he drugged and raped women, is imploding according to a legal filing this week. Sharper pleaded guilty last year and agreed to a nine-year federal prison sentence in a so called “global deal” to resolve all allegations in multiple states. Legal Analyst Tim Meche is not surprised this isn’t working out…:

Meche says, even though a written ruling has not been issued, the new filing suggests the judge in New Orleans wouldn’t accept the deal. He says this is not good news for Sharper as he’s already admitted to being a serial rapist in multiple jurisdictions…:

The joint motion by Sharper’s attorneys and the US Attorney asked the judge to postpone a March 7th trial date. Meche says it looks like Judge Jane Triche Milazzo isn’t committing to the prison terms which means lawyers have to start over and come up with a sentence she’ll accept while preparing for trial. He says Sharper is in a precarious situation…:

Three Louisiana cities are in the Top 10 of the best places to live and work as a moviemaker in 2016. New Orleans ranks number two, Baton Rouge comes in at number three and Shreveport-Bossier is ranked ninth. Executive Director of Louisiana’s Film Office Chris Stelly says there was concern with recent changes to film tax credit program this industry would go downhill but that’s not the case…

Stelly says it’s a testament to how these cities have welcomed the film industry. He says New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport-Bossier all have great infrastructure and staging facilities to invite filming into their cities.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation is surveying an Iberia Parish railroad crossing where five people died right before Christmas. DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallett says gates were installed over 10 years ago and a “do not stop on tracks” sign has been installed. He says they’ll see if any additional safety features can be added at this intersection and others in Iberia Parish.

LSU’s 2016 football recruiting class just missed out on being ranked number one in the country. According to ESPN, it’s the 3rd best class, with Florida State coming in first and Alabama second. Coach Les Miles says whether it’s number one or third, they filled some holes on their roster…

LSU also finished with the third best recruiting class according to 24-7 sports. They had Alabama number one followed by Florida State.

The Ragin Cajuns signed 22 players, six of them are considered three-star prospects by 24-7 sports. UL Lafayette also signed five players out of junior college. Highlighting that group of players is cornerback Artez Williams and safety Denarius Howard from Mississippi Delta Community College.

Louisiana Tech’s recruiting class contains some beef on the defensive line. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz….

Unfortunately for LSU, Alabama won the recruiting title again as they are ranked number one by 24-7, Rivals and Scout.

According to Rivals-dot-com, Louisiana Tech’s recruiting class is ranked as the fifth best in Conference USA. There are a couple of three-star prospects, Livonia defensive end Willie Baker and Pine Bluff, Arkansas defensive back David Beasley.

UL Lafayette did well in getting guys from the New Orleans area…Shaw running back Trey Ragas and East St. John cornerback Dontrell Allen.

ULM signed a quarterback from Dallas. His name is Caleb Evans. They also received signed national letters of intent from Lafayette defensive back Jayrin Wilson, Parkview Baptist running back Kayin White, John Ehret defensive end Kerry Starks and Walker linebacker Kyle Nevels.

In the NBA…the Pelicans have a tough challenge tonight as they visit the San Antonio Spurs, who have won 35 straight regular-season home games. The Spurs will not have Tim Duncan, who is out with a sore right knee.

A new report from LSU’s Institute for Public Health and Justice suggests that Louisiana should increase the age for adult imprisonment. The study recommends that 17-year-olds should be treated as juveniles instead of adults after they are arrested. Lead author, Professor Stephen Phillippi (Philip-ee), says this study did not look at heinous and very violent crimes committed by 17-year-olds…

The report suggests raising the age for adult imprisonment in routine situations. The study was compiled at the request of the state legislature. Phillipi says several states have recently put 17-year-olds back in their juvenile system with good results…

The report discovered that 17-year-olds sent to adult prison are more likely to to commit additional crimes when they are released. Phillippi says some states actually save money by making this change…

New York real estate heir Robert Durst pleads guilty to a weapons charge today in New Orleans federal court. Durst was arrested at a hotel on Canal Street in March 2015 when, during a search by the FBI fearing he was about to leave the country, a .38 caliber revolver was found which is illegal for a convicted felon to possess. Legal analyst Chick Foret says, under a plea bargain, Durst will be sentenced to 85 months in federal prison…:

The judge said he would decide whether or not to accept the plea after receiving a pre-sentencing report. Foret says a seven year, one month sentence for the 72-year-old is a substantial one. He says Wednesday in court, Durst didn’t look so good…:

Foret says Durst had to make a deal today because his only defense was whether or not the search of the room was valid, but a judge ruled the evidence was admissible. The millionaire’s first wife vanished in 1982 and authorities believe he killed Susan Berman to keep her quiet about what she knew. Foret believes Durst is now looking for closure…:

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Melville woman and her two sons in connection with the shooting death of 15-year-old Treyvon Edwards. Capt. Clay Higgins says a 12-year-old has been charged with Negligent Homicide and it’s believed he and Edwards were playing with a gun and it went off accidentally killing Edwards.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office charged 33-year-old Twanda Louray Washington with Obstruction of Justice and two counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile. Higgins says they suspect the mother and other son helped to cover up the crime scene. He says there are details of the case that might never be released…

Finishing with the nation’s number one recruiting class might not happen for the Tigers. Erick Fowler a linebacker from Texas decommitted from LSU today and signed with the Texas Longhorns. He’s considered one of the top outside linebackers in the country. But LSU should have a top 5 recruiting class, thanks to signings from some very good defensive and offensive linemen like John Curtis offensive tackle Willie Allen. Patriots head coach JT Curtis says Allen has the intangibles to be an outstanding offensive lineman in the SEC…

And Charles Hanagriff with ESPN 104.5 in Baton Rouge is reporting that offensive coordinator Cam Cameron could be leaving LSU. Cameron’s current three-year contract expires in March.

According to rivals-dot-com, Louisiana Tech has the fourth best recruiting class in Conference USA with three… three-star recruits and that includes Livonia defensive end Willie Baker.

Highlighting the Ragin Cajuns recruiting class is East St. John cornerback Dontrel Allen, Cecilia running back Raymond Calais and Breaux Bridge linebacker Korey Louis.

ULM’s recruiting class features some Louisiana talent as well. Parkview Baptist running back Kayin White, John Ehret defensive end Kerry Starks and Acadiana’s Jayrin White.

In basketball…the LSU Tigers have moved into sole possession of second place in the SEC after beating Auburn 80-68 last night. Ben Simmons had 21 points and 13 rebounds. Shawn Long scored a season high 28 points and had 17 rebounds as UL Lafayette beat ULM 72-65 in overtime. Justin Roberson had 21 for the Warhawks.

And Zeek Woodley poured in 30 points as Northwestern State defeated Central Arkansas 91-75.

After losing to number one ranked Oklahoma on Saturday, the LSU Tigers are back in action tonight against Auburn in an SEC match-up. The Bayou Bengals are 6-2 in league play, while Auburn is 3-5. It will be interesting to see how LSU freshman Ben Simmons will play. He had 14-points against the Sooners and faced criticism that he wasn’t aggressive enough or didn’t want the ball late in the second half. Tip-off is at 6 PM.

The Ragin Cajuns put their six-game winning streak on the line tonight as they host in-state foe ULM. The Warhawks have won four in a row and they are led by Majok Deng, who is averaging 20 points a game. But ULM is just 1-and-11 on the road, while UL Lafayette is 9-0 at home. Tip-off is at 7:15.

Also tonight, Northwestern State visits Central Arkansas. Two years ago and last year, these two teams played games that saw each team score over 100 points. Tip-off is at 6:30.

Tomorrow is national signing day. 24-7 sports and ESPN say as it stands now, LSU has the number one recruiting class in the nation. Ponchatoula offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell who committed to LSU last January announced that he’s sticking with that verbal pledge and will sign with the Tigers tomorrow.

According to a survey of coaches, UL Lafayette is picked to win the Sun Belt in baseball. The Cajuns received eight first place votes, while South Alabama received three. ULM is picked to finish tenth in the 11-team league.

Southeastern Louisiana has been picked to win the Southland title in baseball this season. The Lions are the preseason favorites in the coaches and sports information directors polls. In the SID poll, Northwestern State is picked to finish in second place, followed by McNeese State and Nicholls State is expected to finish in fifth place.

Louisiana’s Cajun groundhog, Pierre C. Shadeaux, predicts an early and long spring this year. The young nutria came out of his Cajun cottage in New Iberia this morning in front of a crowd awaiting to find out his forecast. Publisher of the Daily Iberian Will Chapman led the ceremony and says since he didn’t see his shadow, we will have a longer spring and put off the extreme summer heat.

Chapman says every February 2nd Pierre C. Shadeaux makes his prediction at Bouligny Plaza. He says every year there is a great turnout for the event and the kids really look forward to seeing him come out of his Cajun cottage.

Pierre’s cousin, Punxsutawney Phil, made a similar prediction today in Pennsylvania calling for an early spring. Chapman says Pierre takes his job very seriously, as he has a lot of responsibility with predicting this forecast.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, along with the EPA, are looking into water quality issues in the Tensas Parish town of St. Joseph. Residents have reported brown, murky water coming from their faucets. State Health Officer, Dr. Jimmy Guidry, says the system’s source water contains a level of iron that discolors the water…

He says the iron in the water is not a health issue. Guidry adds that the St. Joseph Water System is an older system in need of maintenance and repair. The state legislature has approved funds to work on the system. Guidry says they’re doing everything they can at the state level to move this project on as quickly as possible…

He says the legislature would have to make water treatment a top priority before those funds are readily available. Guidry says it could be a while before the water is cleared up…

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murder of a Melville teenager. Capt. Clay Higgins says 14-year-old Treyvon Goudeau was shot once and found dead in the woods on Friday. He says the case was originally identified as just a suspicious death but it has now turned into a homicide investigation.

The coroner says Goudeau was shot once in the head. Higgins says detectives searched a Melville home this morning and interviewed a number of people but no arrests have been made at this point.

Goudeau was a student at Port Barre High School. Higgins says they can’t imagine why someone would murder this teenager. He says detectives have been working non-stop to find who is responsible…

Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says he’s paying his executive staff nearly 400-thousand dollars less than what employees were paid under the previous administration. Dardenne says he’s decided against filling a couple of positions and will pay a few people less, because of the state’s budget problems

Dardenne’s annual salary is 237-thousand dollars, a 33-thousand dollar increase than his predecessor. Dardenne says that’s the salary the governor offered him and he accepted the challenge of solving Louisiana’s budget mess…

The LSU men’s basketball team can’t worry about what happened on Saturday when they lost to number one ranked Oklahoma, because tonight they take on Auburn at Auburn Arena at six PM. The Tigers are 6-2 in league play, while Auburn is 3-5. LSU is still very much on the bubble to make the NCAA Tournament and need to win games likes tonight.

There’s a good match-up in the Cajundome tonight as ULM squares off with UL Lafayette. The Warhawks have won four in a row, while the Cajuns have won six in a row. A win for ULM and they’ll move into a second place tie with UL Lafayette in the Sun Belt.

Also tonight…Northwestern State hosts Central Arkansas. Last night…Southeastern defeated McNeese 82-80, UNO thumped Nicholls 74-53 and Grambling lost.

The Pelicans ended their seven-game homestand with a 110-95 loss to Memphis. Memphis hit 9 three-pointers, five of them in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.
