Louisiana’s budget problems are getting worse. A special session that starts on Sunday and attempt to come up with a rebalanced budget that takes into account the huge shortfall. The administration’s chief economist Manfred Dix says the oil industry is not the only sector of our economy that’s struggling

State lawmakers have started filing bills for the special session, and one of the first measures proposed would increase the state tax on a pack of cigarettes another 22-cents to $1.08 per pack. Last year lawmakers increased the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 50-cents. If the proposed bill passes, the tax will go into effect on April 1. West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman says the state needs the additional money from the tax this year as Louisiana faces a huge deficit.

LSU Religious Studies professor Michael Pasquier says, even though some people may be critical of the mobile ashing, this is something more churches are considering to cater to their members’ schedules…

Governor John Bel Edwards will publicly address Louisiana residents about the state’s historic budget deficit. The Thursday night address will air at 6:30 on television and radio stations. ULM Political Science Professor Dr. Joshua Stockley says the governor is making an effort to restore the fiscal foundation of the state, without making major cuts to higher education and health care.

Louisiana’s budget problems are getting worse. The Revenue Estimating Conference has revised the deficit for this fiscal year from 750-million to 870-million dollars. Low oil prices are to blame for the decline in revenue, but that’s not the only issue. The legislature’s chief economist Greg Albrecht says corporate tax collections are also weak…

One of the first proposed bills for the special legislative session would raise the state tax on a pack of cigarettes to $1.08, an increase of 22-cents per pack. West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman says this tax will generate more state revenue and could save money on long-term healthcare if the tax encourages people to quit smoking.

More bad injury news for the Pelicans. Shooting guard Tyreke Evans will reportedly miss the rest of the season, because he need surgery on his ailing knee. Evans has missed the last seven games because of knee tendinitis and had arthroscopic surgery on that knee in October.

Tonight the Pelicans host the Utah Jazz. The Jazz have won seven in a row, eight of their last ten.

The Saints and Danell Ellerbe have reportedly agreed to a restructured contract for the veteran linebacker. His contract was expected to count nearly six million dollars towards the salary cap. Ellerbe is moving into the second year of a three-year contract after being acquired in a trade last offseason. The 30-year-old only played in six games last year because of injuries.

It appears the NCAA has enough evidence to levy some penalties against the Ole Miss football program. The Associated Press is reporting the NCAA has cited 13 violations against the Rebels and nine of them have occurred during Hugh Freeze’s tenure as head coach. Some of the violations are considered serious and some have been self-reported by the school.

The LHSAA has released updated power ratings in boys basketball. Natchitoches Central is the highest rated team in Five-A, followed by Scotlandville and Ruston. In Four-A, St. Thomas More is number one, in 3-A it’s Peabody, two-A Madison Prep, One-A Lafayette Christian and in Class B and C it’s Fairview and Elizabeth.

It’s ash Wednesday as thousands of Christians around the state will mark the start of the 40-day Lenten season by receiving crosses of ash on their forehead to symbolize penance. Churches around the state are holding services and some have set up mobile ash distribution sites so people can get their ashes without attending mass.

The Lenten season is also a busy time of the year for the seafood industry and Halen Doughty reports this could be one of the best for crawfish in Louisiana…

Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson is expected to formally announce he’s entering the race to represent Louisaina’s fourth congressional district. The republican gained name recognition for pushing a religious freedom bill in the legislature last year. Political analyst Elliot Stonecipher says Johnson will do well with voters in Bossier, but Caddo Parish is a different story…

The website Roadsnacks has released its top ten most boring cities in Louisiana and Central, which is located in East Baton Rouge Parish, is number one. Roadsnacks spokesperson Nick James says they looked at city population to come up with their list…

Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany introduces legislation designed to make sure President Barack Obama’s proposed 10-dollar tax on a barrel of oil never passes Congress. Boustany says this tax would create another level of problems for the state’s struggling oil and gas industry…

Fishermen that harvest wild crawfish out of the Atchafalaya Basin like what they are seeking this season. Sherbin Collette says the mudbugs are bigger because high waters flushed out many swamps that have not been fished in years….

Collette expects an agressive crawfish market as more people are getting into the industry, because of job losses in oil and gas.

Louisiana’s revenue forecasts will be revised today and that means the state’s budget crisis could get worse. If the data shows less revenue coming into the state than anticipated, then the state’s 750-million dollar shortfall for this fiscal year and 1-point-nine billion dollar deficit for next fiscal year could grow.

Central is the boringest city in Louisiana, according to a ranking complied by the website Road Snacks. Emelie Gunn has more on the factors that go into the ranking…

Louisiana’s budget situation could get even worse when the revenue estimating conference meets at the state capitol today. The state is already looking at a 750-million dollar shortfall for this fiscal year and a 1-point-nine billion dollar deficit next year and the shortfalls could grow because less than anticipated revenues are coming into the state’s coffers.

Last night…Southeastern Louisiana’s two-game winning streak ended as the Lions fell to Central Arkansas 88-72.

It was a beautiful day for the Courier de Mardi Gras in Mamou. Mayor Ricky Fontenot says Mamou is like a little New Orleans because people from all over flock there for the Mardi Gras celebrations. He says the traditional celebration starts off early at 6 am…

The website Trulia ranked the most Saintly Sanctuaries and Sin cities in the country and to no surprise, New Orleans comes in a number one for a sinful city. Spokesperson Filipe Chacon says the number of gambling establishments per household ranked highly in the categories of lust and greed for New Orleans. He says Shreveport came in as the number seven sin city in the country and both Louisiana cities come in pretty high on the list for sloth…

A statue honoring the late Pete Maravich has been approved by the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. The set back for a Maravich statue has been that “Pistol Pete” passed away a few credit hours short of earning an LSU degree. The LSU Board of Supervisors recently made changes to a policy that opened the door for a Maravich statue. Former LSU Basketball player Collis Temple Jr. says Maravich deserves this honor…
