Tiger Rag Editor Cody Worsham has confirmed an ESPN report that says fifth-year senior Keith Hornsby could miss the rest of the season because of an injury. Worsham says Hornsby has been playing in pain all year and apparently he re-aggravated the sports hernia that required surgery at the beginning of the season.

After sweeping Cincinnati in a three-game series, the LSU Tigers remain in the top ten in both the Perfect Game and D-1 Baseball Top 25 polls. Perfect Game has LSU ranked at number five. LSU is ranked 7th by D-1 Baseball. The Ragin Cajuns, who swept Sam Houston State, are ranked 8th and 16th in those two respective polls.

According to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper, LSU linebacker Deion Jones is one player that’s moved up on teams’ draft boards. Kiper says it’s possible Jones could be selected late in the first round or in the second round. The NFL draft combine starts later this week.

In college hoops tonight…Southern, who is in third place in the SWAC, visits Alabama A-and-M. McNeese State hosts Central Arkansas. The Cowboys have lost six of their last seven. And Northwestern State hosts Nicholls State. Each team has won seven games total this season.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has awarded a 2.1 million dollar loan to assist an Avoyelles Parish water system improve its drinking water. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says the money comes from the state‘s Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund, which helps improve infrastructure to ensure drinking water stays safe.

Guidry says the project calls for a new pump stations, new ground water storage tank, a new well and chlorination facility at the Yellow Bayou Pump station….

But Michael Henderson, Director of LSU’s Public Policy Research Lab, says these surveys might not tell the whole story, because the polls do not ask the respondents about potential consequences if revenues are not raised….

 Henderson, who puts together the annual Louisiana Survey, says the public usually always opposes proposes to increase taxes. But voters also oppose spending cuts to education or transportation, so that’s why some of the recent polls are not an accurate description of what the legislature is dealing with…

Supermodel Pamela Anderson suggests to Governor John Bel Edwards that Louisiana’s budget could benefit from serving all-vegan food to prisoners. That’s according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA spokesperson Dan Matthews says Anderson has visited other jails around the country that save hundreds of thousands of dollars by not serving meat:

Another interesting series to watch is the one in Hammond as Southeastern Louisiana hosts ULM.

The Pelicans return from the All-Star break tonight as they host the Philadelphia 76ers. This is an excellent opportunity for New Orleans to get a win. The 76ers are an NBA worst 8-45. With about 30 games left, the Pels are six games back of Houston for the final spot in the Western Conference playoffs.

LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said on a Baton Rouge radio station this morning that the Tigers chances of getting an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament are not good. Alleva has been on the NCAA Tournament selection committee for the last five years and he says a team with an RPI over 80 has never received an invite into the tournament. LSU’s RPI is 82.

The 16-10 Tigers are at Tennessee tomorrow. In other games of note…the Ragin Cajuns will look to snap a two-game losing streak as they visit Texas State. ULM is at Texas-Arlington. Both teams have won four straight.Louisiana Tech travels to UTEP. In the SWAC Southern visits Alabama State.

Invest in a Healthy Lousiaina released a poll today that shows strong support among Louisiana voters for an increase in the state’s cigarette tax as a way to address the state’s huge budget shortfall. Pollster Glen Bolger says the poll asked people about three different tax levels and found no statistical difference between the options…

At this point lawmakers have only talked about raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 22-cents.

The last member of the Angola three was released from prison today. Albert Woodfox plead no contest to the manslaughter and aggravated burglary charges he’s facing in the death of a 1972 prison guard. Woodfox has spent most of his prison life in solitary confinement. Attorney General Jeff Landry says they will NOT seek to try Woodfox for a third time.

Harper Lee, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “To Kill A Mockingbird,” has died at the age of 89. Head of Special Collections at LSU Jessica Lacher Feldman says Lee’s death is the end of an era. Feldman worked at the University of Alabama, where Lee spoke to students once a year. Feldman was Lee’s handler when she visited and says Lee’s novel resonated deeply with many people.

Feldman says Lee’s recently released book “Go Set A Watchman,” broke many publishers records. Feldman says Lee’s first novel was influential because Lee wrote about race and gender issues in a very real, but idealized, way.

A new poll from Invest in a Healthy Louisiana and Public Opinion Strategies finds increasing the tobacco tax is favored by seven out of 10 voters. Pollster Glen Bolger says the survey polled 500 likely Louisiana voters and many people are opposed to hikes in the state’s income, sales or property taxes, but favor an increase to the state’s tobacco tax…

The Invest in a Healthy Louisiana Coaltion is advocating a $1.25 per pack increase in the tobacco tax. So far, only a 22-cent increase has been discussed by the legislature. Bolger says the poll asked people about three different tax levels and found no statistical difference between the options.

Increasing the cigarette tax by $1.25 would raise more than $200 million a year for Louisiana. Bolger says the increase is popular across party lines…

In the NBA…after trading for him yesterday, the Pelicans released Jarnell Stokes today. The Pelicans have also signed guard Bryce Dejean-Jones, who has played in 11 games this season for the Pels and averaged six points and nearly four rebounds a game. New Orleans returns from the All-Star Break tonight as they host the Philadelphia 76ers.

Last night in college basketball…Louisiana Tech defeated Texas San Antonio 87-74. That’s the third straight win for the Bulldogs. Alex Hamilton led the way with 25 points.

ULM won easily over Texas State 76-57. Justin Roberson poured in 21 points and Majok Deng add 16 points for the 14-and-12 Warhawks.

Tough loss for the Ragin Cajuns as they fell to Texas-Arlington in overtime 84-83.

Tomorrow…LSU is at Tennessee. Coach Johnny Jones says Ben Simmons is playing with an injured finger, which may have led to his 10-for-19 free throw performance in the loss to Alabama.

A debate broke out at the state capitol over a tax credit that benefits working individuals with low incomes. Prairieville Representative Tony Bacala has legislation to do away with the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit, which he says will save the state about 50-million dollars a year

The New Orleans lawmaker has a bill to double the earned income tax credit. A vote on the two different measures was not taken. The House committee is waiting to hear on all of the different tax bills, before deciding which ones should advance.

According to a poll of the SEC baseball coaches, the LSU Tigers are projected to finish in second place in the SEC West, behind Texas A-and-M. Starting pitcher Alex Lange is a preseason 1st team all-sec selection. The Tigers open the season tomorrow night against Cincinnati. LSU Coach Paul Mainieri said today that shortstop Trey Dawson may not play in the season opener because of pink eye.

Sixth ranked UL Lafayette is at home to take on Sam Houston State. The defending champs in the Southland Conference, Southeastern Louisiana, will host ULM for three games in Hammond.

The NBA trade deadline came and went and the Pelicans did NOT trade Ryan Anderson, even though there was a lot of interest in the veterans. The Pels did make one move by acquiring power forward Jarnell Stokes from the Miami Heat for a future second round pick. Stokes has played in 26 career NBA games after a three-year career at Tennessee.

After serving as an LSU grad student in 2004, former Auburn quarterback Dameyune Craig is back in Baton Rouge this time as the wide receivers coach for the Tigers. Craig joins LSU after serving as Auburn’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach…

A federal judge in New Orleans has rejected former Saints star Darren Sharper’s plea deal. Sharper who is accused of drugging and raping women in several states was hoping to get a nine-year sentence, but Judge Jane Triche Milazzo says the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Legal analyst Chick Foret says Sharper has three options in front of him…

Judge Milazzo had said the accusations against Sharper should lead to a 15 to 20 year prison sentence if found guilty.
