LSU AgCenter food scientist Marvin Moncada has developed a “nanosalt” which you can use to flavor your food, but it will reduce your sodium intake. Moncada says they are still in the lab stage, but he expects tests to be conducted with consumers shortly…

Triple-A expects over 38 million Americans will travel over the Memorial Day weekend, the highest number of travelers since 2005. Spokesperson Don Redman says it’s due to low gas prices, which are currently around $2.10 a gallon for regular gasoline. He says these are the lowest gas prices we’ve seen in 11 years.

Redman says from January until now, Americans have saved about 18 billion dollars that would usually go into their gas tanks. He warns drivers to be careful because a lot of travelers will be on the road this holiday weekend.

The nonprofit group Rebuild Louisiana is raising money that will go towards getting public support for Governor John Bel Edwards’ legislative agenda. It’s expected the governor will call a special session next month to address a 600-million dollar budget shortfall. Chairman of Rebuild Louisiana, Mary Olive Pierson says the group is raising money because there are plenty of what she calls “hard heads” in the legislature.

Several republican lawmakers have said a second special session should take place later in the year, after taxes were raised in the first special session. Pierson says Rebuild Louisiana is raising money through social media, direct mail, and every available outlet so they can spread their message through all popular mediums. She says one of their biggest concerns is the state budget. But she says they’re pushing for several issues.

Pierson says they are concerned about some items that have already been defeated, such as equal pay for men and women. She says the fight isn’t over yet, because after this session, there will be another special session, and her organization will continue to push for their concerns.

An LSU AgCenter scientist has discovered a new way to reduce the sodium content in food. Marvin Moncada developed nanosalt, which is salt in a powder form that is about one-thousand times smaller than kosher salt. Moncada says nanosalt is a natural alternative to reducing the amount of salt content in foods.

Moncada says The CDC recommends individuals eat 23-hundred milligrams of sodium a day but most people in the US eat double the amount. He says they’re still in the lab stage but expects tests to be conducted with consumers shortly.

State lawmakers have agreed to raise the GPA requirement for upper-tier TOPS students, who also receive a stipend to help pay for their higher education costs. The legislation heading to the governor’s desk would raise the GPA requirement to 3.25 for a TOPS Performance Award and 3.5 for a TOPS Honors Award.

In the bottom of the ninth last night, LSU first baseman Greg Deichmann blasted a solo home to tie the game with Tennessee at four and Kramer Robertson drove a line drive down the left field line to push across the winning run as the Bayou Bengals defeated the Volunteers five to four in the SEC Tournament. The fifth seeded Tigers face fourth seeded Florida tonight, after the Tigers took two of three from the Gators this past weekend.

After sweeping Rice last weekend, Louisiana Tech lost to the Owls in the opening game of the Conference USA Tournament. The final score was 13 to 12. Rice scored nine runs in the second inning, but as Tech Head Coach Greg Goff said, Tech ran out of outs to complete the come back. The Bulldogs will look to avoid elimination tomorrow against either Charlotte or Florida Atlantic.

Tulane is in the winner’s bracket of the American Athletic Conference after beating Central Florida four to three. The Green Wave play again tomorrow.

At the Southland Conference today….Southeastern Louisiana scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat UNO five to four. Jameson Fisher drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Kade Granier earned the victory in relief, his fifth of the season.

So tomorrow in the Southland. it will be Northwestern State and UNO in an elimination game at 9:00 in the morning. The Demons were blanked by McNeese State 3 to 0 today. Cowboys right-hander Kaleb Fontenot threw eight scoreless innings. McNeese will face S-L-U in a winner’s bracket contest at 4 PM.

The Ragin Cajuns play tonight in the Sun Belt Tournament as UL Lafayette faces Arkansas State in San Marcos, Texas. The Cajuns have won six in a row and they are in position to possibly host an NCAA Tournament Regional. First pitch is at 7:30.

LSU’s 2017 football recruiting class continues to grow. Six-foot-five, 315-pound offensive guard Saahdiq Charles has announced he plans to attend LSU. Charles is a New Orleans native, but currently lives near Jackson Mississippi. He’s considered a three-star prospect.

The LSU baseball team battled back from a four to nothing deficit to beat Tennessee five to four last night to avoid elimination from the SEC Tournament. Greg Deichmann tied the game with a home run in the ninth and Kramer Robertson produced another big hit, with his line shot down the left field line to score the winning run. LSU now enters the double elimination portion of the SEC Tournament and they’ll face Florida tonight at around 8:00.

The Southland Tournament gets underway today in Sugar Land, Texas. First up its McNeese versus Northwestern State. The second game of the day is seventh seeded UNO versus 2nd seeded Southeastern Louisiana. The Privateers just took two of three from the Lions about a week and a half ago.

A House-approved bill that would have punished so called “sanctuary cities” for implementing policies that are deemed to protect illegal immigrants, failed to get enough votes to pass out of a Senate committee. Normand added that it’s the federal government’s job to combat illegal immigration. The proposal could have hurt New Orleans and Lafayette’s ability to borrow money for construction projects.

A House-committee voted against a proposed program that would allow law enforcement agencies to automatically scan motorists license plates. Supporters say the program would be used to catch car thieves and uninsured motorists, but opponents raised concerns about a private vendor making a nice profit from the fine money.

The Senate Health and Welfare Committee voted for legislation that would ban abortions in cases where the fetus is determined to have a genetic abnormality. The House-approved measure passed on a three to one vote. Baton Rouge Senator Dan Claitor raised concerns the proposed law is unconstitutional, but despite his objection, the panel advanced the measure to the full senate.

The NFL has awarded Super Bowl 53 to Atlanta over New Orleans, as the Georgia city received more votes from the league’s owners than the Crescent City. It’s a second consecutive defeat for New Orleans, who also placed a bid to host the Super Bowl in 2018, but lost to Minneapolis. In both cases, New Orleans lost out to cities, who were building new stadiums.

Tonight, LSU faces Tennessee in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers have won 11 of their last 12 games and they’ve put themselves in a position to possibly be a Top 8 National seed and host up until the College World Series. Atlanta, not New Orleans will host Super Bowl 53 in 2019. The Big Easy made a proposal to NFL owners who are meeting in Charlotte today, but the vote went Atlanta’s way. Some considered New Orleans a long shot, because Atlanta is in the process of building a new stadium.

House-approved legislation that sought to penalize so called “sanctuary cities” died in a Senate committee today. The legislation was designed to force New Orleans and Lafayette to follow federal immigration laws. New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison spoke out against the bill..
