Multiple outlets are reporting LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri has been contacted by Texas about its head coaching vacancy and he has interviewed with Longhorn athletic officials. Mainieri just completed his 10th season as the Tigers’ skipper and his current contract with LSU runs through 2018. Mainieri has yet to comment publicly. There are some who suggest Mainieri could be using this opportunity as a way to get a pay raise from LSU.

In other LSU baseball news…shortstop Kramer Robertson says he’s returning for his senior season.

LSU star running back Leonard Fournette is the men’s recipient of the SEC Sportsmanship Award. Fournette earned the award for his action in support of the people of South Carolina who suffered through an unprecedented flood last Fall. Fournette came up with the idea to auction off the jersey he wore during the South Carolina game. The jersey auction raised 101-thousand dollars, the most ever generated for an auction by an active college student-athlete.

The Saints final minicamp practice is today. The linebacker unit looks much different from last year. James Laurintatis and Nathan Stupar are two big additions. Stupar says he’s been impressed with recently acquired linebacker Craig Robertson, who started nine games in Cleveland last season….

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Preparedness is urging Louisiana residents to take precautions as the state is experiencing dangerously high temperatures this week. GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says much of the state is under a heat advisory, as heat indexes are reaching triple digits. He says the biggest concern for people will be heat exhaustion….

A new study shows Louisiana parents average premium for car insurance increases by over 86-percent when they add a teen driver to an existing policy. Senior insuance analyst with Insurance-quotes-dot-com, Laura Adams, advises parents to take advantage of every discount available to them…

During Governor John Bel Edwards weekly call-in show, he was asked if increasing the state’s gasoline tax could be used to address the state’s 600-million dollar shortfall. Edwards says he has established transportation task force that will look into revenue raising measures such as gas taxes, tolls, and other ideas. But he says those dollars will have to go towards transportation…

The governor is hoping the House will pass a bill today that would decrease a state income tax deduction that many citizens who make over 100-thousand dollars enjoy.

Crowley Representative Jack Montoucet is set to be released from the hospital today after he was carried out of the Captiol on a stretcher yesterday. The 68-year-old complained of chest pains before he was rushed to a hospital, but it turned out he did not suffer a heart attack. No word on when he’ll return to the Capitol.

A House committee and a senate committee approved seperate bills that would generate revenue to address a 600-million dollar shortfall. In House Ways and Means, the panel on a 10-9 vote sent a measure to the House floor that would reduce a tax break for those who itemize on their tax returns. It would generate over 100-million dollars.

The Revenue and Fiscal Affairs committee moved a bill to the Senate floor that requires large manufacturing facilities to choose between two different property tax breaks they currently benefit from. Alexandria Senator Jay Luneau says the state is struggling financially and can’t afford to give businesses large tax breaks…

LSU announces they’ve developed a plan to allow halftime performances of visiting bands. The plan involves re-configuring the seating areas in the South End Zone so visiting bands may take a more direct route to the field, which will reduce congestion on the sidelines and enter the field in a precise manner.

The Sun Belt Conference has announced that it’s men’s and women’s basketball championships will remain at the New Orleans Lakefront Arena through 2019. The league also announced that the formate for the 2017 championship will include all 12 members. The men’s tournament will run from March 8th to the 12th. The title game will be played at noon on Selection Sunday.

In college football, Tulane announced today that it’s home opener against Southern on September 10th will kick-off at 7 PM and it’s contest against UL Lafayette on September 24th will start at either 6 or 7 PM. And Nicholls has announced its home game against Lamar has been moved to Thursday, November third.

Former LSU infielder Ryan Schimpf and member of the 2009 national championship team made his major league debut last night for San Diego and recorded a double and scored a run in the Padres five to two loss to Miami. Schimpf was hitting .355 with 15 home runs for Triple-A El Paso.

Former LSU hitting coach, Turtle Thomas, has announced his resignation as the head coach at FIU. He’s been the skipper of the Panthers the last nine seasons. FIU went 29-and-29 this past season.

Southeastern Louisiana first baseman Jameson Fisher has been named the Southland Baseball Player of the Year. The Zachary native hit .424 and drove in 66 runs for the Lions. He reached base at least once in his last 51 games of the year. Fisher was selected in the fourth round by the White Sox and signed with Chicago, so he’s not coming back to the Lions.

East Baton Rouge Coroner, Doctor Beau Clark, says the body found in a ditch in Iberville Parish yesterday was shot in the head, but he’s unable to to make a positive identification because of advance stages of decomposition. Authorities believe the body is that of a pregnant woman from Baton Rouge. Clark says the female victim was pregnant at the time of her death.

A federal hearing took place today in Baton Rouge about the hot conditions at Angola’s Death Row. Several inmates are pushing the state to install air conditioning. But the state is arguing that cold showers, ice and fans are there to help the inmates stay cool. The fifth circuit court of appeals ruled last year that death row inmates are not entitled to air conditioning.

The fines for texting or using social media while driving have been increased from $175 to $500 for a first offense, as a bill has just been signed into law by the governor. Major Doug Cain with State Police says they see this is a lot in crashes caused by distracted driving.

Drivers could pay a fine of up to $1,000 for a subsequent offense. Cain says state police deal with distracted driving accidents almost every day, and it’s something that’s entirely avoidable. He says using a cell phone while driving can be a deadly decision.

The fines more than doubled for minors who text and drive, and subsequent offenses could result in a 6 month suspension of their driver’s license. Cain says State Police do issue tickets for this offense, they are usually are made aware that a person is playing with their phone while behind the wheel, based on the driver’s actions.

The new law is now in effect.

FEMA has released a smartphone app to help residents get prepared for potential natural disasters. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate says app is available in the iTunes store and on Google Play. He says it gives you a checklist to follow in the palm of your hand even if you lose cell service.

It also allows users to receive prescheduled safety and preparedness tips, including practicing a fire escape plan and updating emergency tips. Fugate says in today’s society everyone is always on their phone. He says many tools are built in to the app.

Whenever you have service, the FEMA app sends weather alerts for up to five locations across the nation, making it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening family and friends. Fugate says the app will remind you to check your smoke detector and make sure you have emergency supplies prepared in the event of an emergency.

A heat advisory is in effect for the upper half of Louisiana until 7 o’clock Thursday night. State Climatologist Barry Keim says summer has kicked off with a vengeance with temperatures reaching into the mid and upper 90s. He says on top of that, humidity levels are running high leading to high heat index values.

Keim says contributing to the extreme heat is the lack of rain the state will see this week. He says we’re going to have lots of sun baking us with heat index temperatures reaching a possible 108 degrees.

A former deputy with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is under arrest amid charges he had sex with a juvenile while he was on duty. Cops say 31-year-old William Lanoux of Prairieville is charged with malfeasance in office and 1st degree rape. Deputies say the juvenile was considered a runaway when she allegedly met Lanoux on social media and the two went off to have sex. Upon Lanoux’s arrest he was immediately terminated.

Kikaha was expected to be one of the Saints top pass rushers in 2016. Potential replacements on the roster are third year pro Kaism Edebali and Obum Gwacham, who appeared in nine games as a rookie last season. Coach Sean Payton says there’s no rush to sign a veteran pass rusher, but that could change…
