The Louisiana Department of Education says there’s been an increase in the number of high school students who achieved an ACT score that allows them to go to college. Just over 25-thousand high school seniors scored an 18 or higher, which is an increase of 68-hundred since 2012.

A father and his two sons drowned on the Sabine River near Merryville this past weekend. Beauregard Parish Sheriff Rick Mosely says the bodies of the both boys were pulled out of the river last night….

Tragedy hit the Sabine River this weekend when a father and his two sons drowned in Beauregard Parish. Sheriff Rick Mosely says 51-year-old Harlin Powell’s 12-year-old son Dale Powell and stepson Robbie Merritt were swimming in the river when they began to struggle.

Mosely says by the time his deputies arrived at the scene, it was already too late. He says they recovered Mr. Powel from the river, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He says search teams then began trying to locate the two boys.

Mosely says it’s been about five years since anyone has drowned in that part of the river. He says the Sabine River is a popular swimming spot, but the current is stronger than it looks.

Lawmakers will likely consider a bill to increase the state’s gasoline tax, when they meet for the 2017 fiscal session. That’s according to Representative Kenny Havard, who serves as chairman of the House Transportation Committee and sits on the newly-formed Transportation Taskforce. Havard says the state’s gasoline tax has not been raised in over 20 years and there is not enough funds to address the $12 billion backlog for transportation maintenance, much less any new projects.

Louisiana’s 20-cent gas tax ranks 41 in the nation, and only 16-cents of it goes to the transportation trust fund. Havard says he doesn’t really want to raise any taxes, but the state needs the revenue to address the problems with our roads and bridges.

The 18 member taskforce must come up with suggestions for the 2017 session by January 1. Havard says he is open to any other ideas to fund transportation projects, including tolls and public-private partnerships.

The final of the three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers slain in an ambush on cops was laid to rest Monday. Thousands turned out for the funeral of BRPD’s Corporal Montrell Jackson, a 32-year-old 10-year veteran of the department who leaves behind a wife and baby boy, Mason. Governor John Bel Edwards says we have to make this world a better place for Mason:

LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye returns to New Iberia today after surviving a fatal wreck in Wisconsin. Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler died in the one-vehicle crash, when the driver apparently lost control on wet pavement and struck a tree. Delahoussaye’s coach at New Iberia High, Rick Huston, says Delahoussaye suffered injuries that require more medical attention

Delahoussaye was in the back seat of the car at the time of the accident. The kicker is heading into his senior season at LSU and has a chance to be the starting kicker after losing that job to Trent Domingue, who has since transferred to Texas. Hutson says Delahoussaye bleed purple and gold…

Delahoussaye was in Wisconsin to participate in the Kohl’s Kicking Camp. He was participant in the camp last week and was scheduled to serve as a camp counselor this week. Former LSU star Alex Bregman will make his major league debut tonight with the Houston Astros, who host the New York Yankees at 7 PM. Bregman has been hitting the cover off the ball in the minors. In Double and Triple-A, Bregman has a .306 batting average with 20 homers and 61 RBIs. He’ll likely play third base or left field with Houston, who is two and a half games back of Texas for first place in the American League West.

In football news…LSU kicker Colby Delhoussaye is expected back in Louisiana today after suffering what has been described as minor injuries in a fatal wreck in Wisconsin. The NFL has determined quarterback Peyton Manning did not use HGH or any performance enhancing drug. The’s league investigation included interviews with witnesses, a review of records and lab analysis.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office says sports radio host and former LSU basketball player Jordy Hultberg was arrested over the weekend on battery charges. Hultberg allegedly shoved his wife into a dresser after she caught him with another woman.

A record 24 candidates will appear on the November ballot for the US Senate seat being vacated by David Vitter. UL-Lafayette political science professor Pearson Cross says State Treasurer John Kennedy is leading in the early polls. But Cross says Kennedy is going up against some big names.

Republicans Congressmen Charles Boustany and John Fleming, Col. Rob Maness, and former KKK leader David Duke are also big names in the race. Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell and attorney Caroline Fayard are the major Democrats on the ballot. Cross says if a Democrat can pull most of the party vote, they will have a good chance at making the runoff.

Cross says Duke’s entrance into the race means national media coverage, and with this many candidates, there will also be quite a bit of money spent. He says with this many candidates on the ballot, the high vote getter in the primary might only have 23-percent of the vote.

The Democratic National Convention begins today in Philadelphia with 59 Louisiana delegates in attendance. Michael McHale is one of the delegates says and the Lake Charles resident expects this convention to be much different than last week’s Republican convention.

Two weeks before he was killed on the job, he made a post on Facebook pleading for people not to let hate infect their hearts — in the aftermath of the death of Alton Sterling during a confrontation with cops. A tearful goodbye was given today to Baton Rouge Police Officer Matthew Gerald, one of three officers killed in Sunday’s police ambush. Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden called Gerald a hero at the funeral and also urged the community to come together. He says it’s important the public respects the work of police officers…

Tomorrow, funeral services will take place for Deputy Brad Garafola at Istrouma Baptist Church, which is located just off of I-12. On Monday, it’s the funeral services for Corporal Montrell Jackson.

An 81-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged rape of a six-year-old child. Caddo Parish Sheriff deputies say James Dickens had sexual contact with a little girl on number of occasions while at his home. Dickens was arrested and booked into Caddo Correctional Center for first-degree rape.

New Orleans is reportedly the favorite to host the NBA All-Star game in February now that the NBA has stripped the contest away from the city of Charlotte. The NBA moved the game out of North Carolina because that state passed a law this year that limits anti-discrimination protections for the L-G-B-T community. The league says a new location for the 2017 All-Star game will be announced shortly and the city and the association are reportedly in negotiations to bring the star studded event to the Big Easy.

The Pelicans have announced they signed first-round pick Buddy Hield. The NBA franchise also announced the signings of unrestricted free agent forward Terrence Jones and the re-signing of guard Tim Frazier. Jones is a former first round pick of the Rockets in 2012. During his career in Houston, he averaged 10 points and five rebounds a game. Frazier played in 16 games with the Pels last season.

The Sun Belt released is preseason football all-conference team today and only one Ragin Cajun and Warhawk appears on the first team. UL Lafayette senior defensive back Savion Brown is the lone first-team selection. On the second-team offense, you have Cajuns running back Elijah McGuire, ULM wide receiver AJalen Holley. The second-team defense features defensive linemen Karmichael Dunbar and Taboris Lee, linebacker Otha Peters and defensive back Tracy Walker, all from UL Lafayette. ULM’s defensive back Tre Hunter is also on the second-team.

There’s sad news to report out of the NFL. Former Head Coach Dennis Green has passed away. Green led the Vikings to 8 playoff appearances and his 1998 Vikings team went 15-and-1.

And McNeese State is mourning the loss of former athletic director and track and field coach Bob Hayes. He was inducted into the McNeese Hall of Fame in 2000.

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says law enforcement will receive $650,000 in federal funding to defray some of the costs incurred when they responded to Sunday’s deadly attack. Graves says when you consider the amount of overtime that officers worked, total costs for the police could reach $3-5 million dollars.

Former state legislator and ex-Klansman David Duke has entered the US Senate race in Louisiana. Duke says his campaign principles haven’t changed as he’ll stand up for the rights of European Americans….
