Former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu has been placed on the physically unable to perform list by the Arizona Cardinals. The Honey Badger is still recovering from a torn ACL.

The Southland Conference Media Day will take place today in Lake Charles at L’auberge. Sam Houston State is the preseason favorite to win the league as the Bearkats return 16 starters from a team that reached the semifinals in the FCS playoffs last year. McNeese went 10-0 last year in the regular season, but they have a new coach and need to find a new starting quarterback.

LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye said in a social media post that he anticipates he’ll make a full recovery in a very short amount of time. Delahoussaye was the lone survivor in a one-vehicle crash in Wisconsin that claimed the lives of two others. Delahoussaye reportedly has second-degree burns on his left thigh and some bruising and stitches.

Former LSU basketball player Randy Livingston has been named as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Tigers.

Alex Bregman remains hitless after two days in the major leagues.

And UL Lafayette announces they are selling the chairback seats from the old grandstand at Tigue Moore Field.

At around midnight, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a suspect, who allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it during an officer while on a foot chase. Deputies responded to an area near an I-10 service road after getting reports of two suspicious men rolling a shiny object down the street. The sheriff’s office says the victim was carrying a nine millimeter handgun. The victim’s name has not been released.

Former state lawmaker Rick Gallot has been picked as the new president of Grambling State. Gallot says one of the first things he wants to do as president is to restore the university’s undergraduate nursing program, which lost its temporary approval status in 2015….

Franklinton Police are searching for a suspect or suspects who broke into 25 vehicles that belong to members of the Louisiana National Guard. Maj. Justin Brown says robbers stole money, electronic, and personal weapons from the vehicles. He says the secure facility is patrolled regularly:

A man who was driving drunk and traveling over 100 miles per hour in a fatal wreck on Mardi Gras Day in 2015 has plead guilty to vehicular homicide. 25-year-old Bryce Chapman faces up to 30 years in prison. t Lafayette prosecutor Daniel Landry says Chapman is a first time offender, but that likely won’t help his case…

Lafayette Parish School system employee Carol Richard was killed in the wreck.

14 deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office traveled to Dallas to deliver donation checks to two foundations to help the families of the fallen officers who were killed in the July 7th attack on police. Saints players are arriving at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, as tomorrow is reporting today for training camp. Starting left tackle Terron Armstead will apparently start camp on the physically unable to perform list. Armstead is reportedly dealing with a soft-tissue injury and should return in a couple of weeks. For the third consecutive year, the Saints are holding camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Louisiana Tech Head Coach Skip Holtz has expressed confidence that his team can reach a bowl game for a third consecutive season, even though they return just four starters on offense and two on defense. Lafayette prosecutor Daniel Landry says 25-year-old Bryce Chapman is facing up to 30 years in prison and a state judge will decide in November how much time he’ll serve in prison…

The Saints are getting ready to begin training camp as the players are required to report to camp tomorrow. Disabled veterans will see an increase in their compensation beginning next year thanks to a bill by Congressman Ralph Abraham that has just been signed into law. Abraham says the bill will adjust the amount of compensation veterans receive for disability, dependents, and clothing allowance, as well as compensation for surviving spouses.

Abraham says the increase is tied to the social security increase, so we won’t know how much more money these vets will get until the end of November.

Abraham has been an advocate for veterans since he was elected to Congress in 2014. He says veterans have been failed in a lot of areas by the Department of Veterans Affairs. He says the VA has got to get better.

More students than ever have achieved ACT scores that allow them to go to college, according to State Superintendent John White, who says the state’s composite ACT score has increased nearly a half a point since 2013. He says over 25-thousand students in the Class of 2016 scored an 18 or higher on the ACT.

White says he credits this to the 2012 “ACT for All” initiative that allows students to take the exam at no cost, which he says gives more students access to the test. He says they also saw a record number of students qualify for the TOPS scholarship.

Since 2012, over 4-thousand more students have qualified for the TOPS Opportunity scholarship, and more than 2-thousand more earned the TOPS Performance award. White says this growth is good news for Louisiana students.

According to AAA, nationwide gas prices are at a 12 year low. Spokesperson Don Redman says the current statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is about $1.98.

Redman says the price of oil is also down to around $40 a barrel. He says drivers could see prices at the pump go down even more before the end of the summer.

Redman says abundant supply has driven prices down. He says refineries have kept up with the supply surprisingly well considering the high demand.

After a lengthy meeting of the LHSAA executive committee, it’s been decided that Eddie Bonine will remain as the executive director of the association that oversees high school sports. Bonine apologized for the statement he made in a report to the NFHS that referred to the LHSAA as a proverbial dumpster fire.

Lawmakers will likely consider a bill to increase the state’s gasoline tax, when they meet for the 2017 fiscal session. That’s according to Representative Kenny Havard, who serves as chair of the House Transportation Committee and sits on the newly-formed Transportation Taskforce. Havard says there are not enough funds to address the $12 billion backlog for transportation maintenance, much less new projects…:

Former LSU star Alex Bregman will play third base and bat sixth tonight for the Houston Astros as the Albuquerque native makes his major league debut tonight. Bregman will try to get his first major league hit off of Michael Pineda and the Yankees. He’ll wear number two and he’s expected to also play left field as he tries to help the Astros get back to the playoffs.

LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye is lucky to be alive after surving a car crash that killed two others in Wisconsin. Delahoussaye was in the back seat of the car at the time of the accident and suffered minor injuries. The kicker is heading into his senior season at LSU and his high school football coach at New Iberia, Rick Hutson, says Delahoussaye says is really excited for this year…

Delahoussaye was in Wisconsin to participate in the Kohl’s Kicking Camp and is expected back in New Iberia today.

At Sun Belt Media Day, Commissioner Karl Benson believes the league has reached a level of stability and doesn’t believe any team would leave the league to join another non-Power 5 conference. But Benson understands that if the Big 12 comes calling, it would be foolish for a Sun Belt school not to listen.

Ragin Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth announced wide receiver Devin Scott is out for the season with a knee injury. Scott had 12 catches for 202 yards last season.

In the NFL….former Saint Junior Galette has torn his achilles tendon and he’ll miss the 2016 season for the Washington Redskins. Galette missed the 2015 season after tearing his Achilles in his other leg.

And in basketball…former LSU Tiger Tim Quarterman has signed a partially-guaranteed training camp contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.

The final of the three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers slain in an ambush on cops was laid to rest today. Over two-thousand people turned out for the funeral of BRPD’s Corporal Montrell Jackson who leaves behind a wife and baby boy, Mason.
