There’s another good chance for rain on Saturday too.

There’s a good chance Louisiana legislators will pass legislation next year that will seek to reduce auto insurance rates, which are among the highest in the country. Republican Pollock Representative Gabe Firment is the chairman of the House Insurance Committee and says one of the biggest factors in our high premiums is the cost of litigation…

Firment says transparency is the key, making sure a judge or jury know the exact cost of the medical bills of the injured party.

Earlier this fall, the legislature passed a sweeping package of tax reforms. Next Wednesday, they go into effect. Kace Kieschnick (KEESH-nick) reports.

Back to work for the Saints today after their dismal performance against Green Bay on Monday night. New Orleans was shutout for the first time since 2022 in a 34 to nothing loss. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler was 15 of 30 for 153 yards and an interception. Rattler was also sacked three times and fumbled once. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi says there was some good things Rattler did, but also a lot to work on…

The Ragin Cajuns have arrived in Albuquerque for Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl game against TCU at 1:115, This is U-L Lafayette’s seventh consecutive bowl trip and will practice today at the University of New Mexico’s Indoor Facility and then some of the players will visit the U-N-M Children’s Hospital.

Tonight the Pelicans take on the Houston Rockets looking to snap a seven game losing streak. Houston has the second-best record in the Western Conference.

Looking ahead to 2025, expect the Louisiana Legislature to take another stab at lowering auto insurance rates. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Based on a CDC report, COVID and flu vaccination rates are low in Louisiana. About a third of Louisiana adults and children are vaccinated against the flu in Louisiana, when the national average is 42-percent and just ten percent of adults in Louisiana are vaccinated against COVID.

Come next Wednesday, scores of new tax laws will go into effect. The state income tax will be reduced to a flat three-percent following a 12,500-dollar standard deduction, which means everyone will see more money in their paychecks. Manish Bhatt (BOT), the senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation, says while that is certainly good, it is offset by higher sales taxes.

New laws governing the sale of CBD and THC products will go into effect when the calendar flips to 2025. Ernest Legier (le-ZHAY), the commissioner of Louisiana alcohol and tobacco control, says starting January 1st, the minimum age to purchase these products goes from 18 to 21, with no grandfather clause for those who are between those ages.

Legier says the state will also be cracking down on companies selling THC-laced gummies in packages that resemble those of popular candies, so that they are not marketed to children.

A military veteran from Lafayette who scored a black bear hunting permit through the Healing Road Foundation harvested what’s believed to be the biggest bear in state history. Andrew Greenstein reports.

This week, human remains have been discovered at two different locations near the town of Ville Platte. The first discovery was over the weekend in a field located south of the Martin Luther King Junior Center. The second set of human remains was found just north Ville Platte on Monday. Authorities are working to identify the remains.

The Christmas Eve Bonfires on the Mississippi River levee tonight in St. James Parish is a great Louisiana tradition. Parish President Pete Dufresne (du-FRAYN) says the tradition dates to the Cajun settlers, these bonfires serve as a guide to Midnight Mass and light the way for Santa.

Saints fans have received a lump of coal from their favorite NFL team this year as New Orleans continued its dreadful season last night with a 34-to-nothing loss to Green Bay. Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi says it was a disappointing performance….

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a total of ten bears, eight males and two females were harvested during a black bear hunting season that ended Sunday….

Military veteran Deron Santiny from Lafayette harvested a 696-pound bear in Tensas Parish. It’s believed to be the largest harvested bear in the state’s history.

Louisiana’s first black bear hunting season since 1987 ended on Sunday, so how did it go?

That’s John Hanks, who is the manager of the large carnivore program at the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Deron Santiny of Lafayette harvested a 696-pound male in Tensas Parish.

President Biden has commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 federal death row inmates. Two of the prisoners are from Louisiana.  In 2014 a federal jury Alexandria decided Thomas Sanders should be put to death for the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Lexis Roberts in 2010. Ex-New Orleans Police officer Len Davis no longer faces a death sentence for hiring a hitman to murder Kim Groves who filed a complaint against him in the 1990s. Both men will now serve a life sentence, without the possibility of parole.

The Christmas Eve Bonfires on the levee in St. James Parish is a tradition in Southern Louisiana, and they are happening tonight. Sean Richardson has more.

Kelly challenged the fanbase earlier this month when he launched the Kelly Family Million Dollar Match Challenge. The Tigers coach would donate up to one million dollars to the Tiger Athletic Foundation for every dollar that’s donated to LSU’s NIL collective.

Rookie Spencer Rattler was 15 of 30 for 153 yards and an interception in his fourth start of the year. The 5-and-10 Saints have two games left and the final home game of the season is this Sunday against Las Vegas.

Ragin Cajuns football coach Michael Desormeaux has received a new five-year contract after leading U-L Lafayette to a Sun Belt West Title.  Desormeaux had two years left on his original contract. The Cajuns take on TCU in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly has done a lot of shopping during this holiday season in the transfer portal as the Tigers program has signed 13 players. According to 2-4-7 sports, LSU has the second-best transfer portal class.

To increase dollars for LSU’s NIL collective, Kelly launched the Kelly Family Million Dollar Match Challenge, matching up to one million dollars in donations to the Tiger Athletic Foundation for every dollar that’s donated to LSU’s NIL collective.

Kelly says the big donors have also increased their contributions to LSU’s NIL collective, but it’s the grassroots support that has been really encouraging…

The LSU’s women’s basketball team is 14-and-0, but actually fell one spot to number six in the AP Top 25 poll. UCLA is number one followed, by South Carolina, Notre Dame, USC and Texas. The Lady Tigers host Albany on Sunday in the final nonconference game.

Black bear hunting season in Louisiana ended with a bang. John Hanks, the large carnivore program manager at the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, says it concluded Sunday with the harvesting of a massive 696-pound male.

The massive bear was harvested by Deron Santiny (san-TIN-ee) of Lafayette, a Purple Heart recipient who received his permit through the Healing Road Foundation, which raffled off a permit to a Louisiana military veteran. Santiny’s bear was taken in Tensas Parish and is believed to be in its late teens to early 20s.

This was the state’s first black bear hunting season since 1987 and a total ten bears, eight males and two females, were harvested in the season that went from December 7th to the 22nd.

The Saints were shutout last night as the Packers beat New Orleans 34 to nothing. The Black and Gold are now five and ten on the season.

The Pelicans dropped their seven straight game losing to Denver 132 to 129 in overtime. C-J McCollum had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed a three-pointer. The Pels have not won since December fifth and they are now 5-and-25 on the season.

LSU men’s basketball improved to 10-and-2 with an 86 to 70 victory UNO yesterday. Guard Cam Carter had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Vyctorius Miller came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points.

McNeese outscored U-L Lafayette ten to one over the final 4-minutes and 47-seconds and beat the Cajuns 64 to 56. Cowboys Coach Will Wade is now 2-and-0 against the Cajuns in his two seasons at McNeese…

Senator John Kennedy is hailing the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act. The act eliminates two provisions that reduced the Social Security benefits of people who worked in the public sector. Senator Kennedy said good riddance to them.

Kennedy said Social Security is not free and belongs to the people who paid into it.

State Police are investigating a fatal police shooting in Hammond on Saturday night. Authorities say a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot 48-year-old Timothy Douglas of Ponchatoula during a foot pursuit. Trooper Marc Gremillion says the deputy was trying to apprehend Douglas who allegedly was driving a stolen vehicle…

The Justice Department is suing the State of Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Corrections, claiming that the state is keeping prisoners in custody after they have completed their sentences. Lydia Wright with the Promise of Justice Initiative says a years-long investigation found that the Louisiana Department of Corrections is keeping thousands of prisoners behind bars beyond their scheduled release dates.

Wright is pinning the blame on the state not using modern technology to keep track of when prisoners are scheduled to be released.

Governor Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill issued a joint statement, calling the lawsuit frivolous and calling it, in their words, “Grinch Joe Biden’s parting Christmas present to the state and to its people.” The statement goes on to say that the problem stems from the failed criminal justice reforms pushed by the Biden administration. Wright says the problems started much earlier.
