Big news involving former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu. The Honey Badger has reportedly agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Mathieu is set to sign a five-year deal that will pay him around 12-million dollars per year. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says Mathieu’s deal includes 40-million dollars in guaranteed money. The fearless defensive back intercepted five passes last year, before his season was cut short from a torn ACL.

LSU has made a couple of announcements. First of all, you will hear all Fighting Tiger broadcasts for free on your desktop and mobile devices this season. Previously, LSU fans had to pay for a subscription to hear games on their phones or computer.

And LSU has scheduled two football games against Rice. The Tigers will face the Owls in NRG Stadium in Houston on September 19th, 2020 and Rice will play LSU in Tiger Stadium in 2024. The two schools are also scheduled to meet in 2018.

ULM cut the ribbon on its new Football Fieldhouse this morning. It’s the first athletic facility in ULM history to be completely funded by private donations. The nearly 12-thousand square football facility has coaches offices, a video room, locker rooms and a hall of fame area. The players will see those new locker rooms when they report for fall practice tomorrow.

Nicholls State reports for fall camp on Sunday. The Colonels will have 20 practices leading up to their first week of the season. Expectations are low for second-year head coach Tim Rebowe. The Colonels were 3-and-8 last season and their top two running backs, Michael Henry and Tobias Lofton, have departed. Rebowe says they’ll be tough to replace…

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is asking residents in southeast Louisiana to partcipate in a phone survey, where they’ll be asked questions about evacuating from a hurricane.

A well owned by Texas Petroleum Investment Company dischared the oil. A Coast Guard spokesperson says they are trying to collect as much oil as possible with skimmers.

Kids and parents are gearing up for the start of the new school year, and that means getting back in the school routine. LSU Health New Orleans Clinical Pediatrics professor, Dr. Cory Hebert, says if parents haven’t started getting their kids adjusted to a school sleep schedule, they should. He says the most important thing for parents to do is practice good sleep hygiene.

Hebert says parents should limit the amount of caffeine their children have, especially right before bedtime, to make sure they get enough sleep. He says the amount of sleep a child needs depends on their age.

Hebert says parents can help their children adjust to new bedtimes by going to bed at the same time as them. He says lack of sleep can cause a child to act out in class, and it can even affect their grades.

A poll from the University of New Orleans finds that 49-percent of Louisiana residents surveyed give Governor John Bel Edward positive marks in his performance for his nearly eight months in office. UNO Pollster Ed Chervenak says they surveyed 600 likely voters and his favorability rating seems to be rising…

Chervenak says they conducted a poll in February and Edwards had an approval rating of 43-percent. He says in this latest poll, women were more approving of Edwards than men.

The UNO survey found that just over one third of the respondents gave a negative review of his job performance and 15-percent had no opinion. Chervenak says an approval rating near 50-percent isn’t bad for a Democrat in a red state.

A phone survey on hurricane preparedness is being conducted by LSU, and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is urging residents of southeast Louisiana to participate. Mike Steele with GOHSEP says participants will be asked about their evacuation plans in case of a hurricane.

Steele says LSU will perform the survey over the next three months. He says the results of the poll will help GOHSEP and other state agencies help residents in southeast Louisiana evacuate.

A Luling man has been arrested after shooting his estranged father-in-law in the chest. St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne says 30-year-old William Canada, Jr is charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder for shooting into the home of his estranged wife’s parents where she was staying. He says Canada showed up at their home at around 4 in the morning the father-in-law was watching TV in the living room.

Champagne says the bullet that hit the father didn’t penetrate his chest cavity because it first went through a door and sofa. He says Canada fled the scene but left behind a makeshift Molotov cocktail and some form of accelerant. The Sheriff says they are searching Canada’s residence.

Champagne says after Canada and his wife separated, he went into a depression. He says Canada went into rehab for an addiction to Oxycodone after suffering head trauma while serving in the military and quit his job at Valero oil refinery two weeks ago.

There have been 27 shooting deaths in Shreveport this year. Corporal Marcus Hines says the latest victim is 15-year-old Desmon Bell, who was found dead inside a home from a gunshot wound to the head. He says they still don’t know the shooter and witnesses aren’t cooperating…:

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information on this crime. Hines says 27 murders so far this year is a high number, but most of them are not just random acts of violence…:

A UNO poll shows that 82-percent of likely voters in Louisiana disapprove of US Senate candidate and former KKK leader David Duke. The survey found that 13-percent of the respondents said they would vote for Duke and UNO pollster Ed Chervenak says young voters were twice as likely to rate him favorably…

Duke is one of 24 candidates in the US Senate race.

Hundreds of new laws are now in effect including one that doubles the fine for not wearing your seat belt. Interim Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Ken Trull, says the fine for a first offense went from $25 to $50. He says this is not about money, it’s about driver safety…:

This new law applies to everyone in a vehicle, not just the driver.

A study from the personal finance website WalletHub finds Louisiana has the worst school system in America. WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzales says that’s disappointing when you consider Louisiana ranks in the middle pack of other states when it comes to state spending on public education, which means the state might not be spending is money wisely when it comes to schools…

In response to the report, the state department of education says public school students have made tremendous growth. They point to improving reading and math scores from 4th graders and the graduation rate is at an all-time high.

US Senate candidate and former-KKK leader David Duke has an 82% disapproval rating, according to a University of New Orleans poll of about 600 likely voters. Duke entered the US Senate race on the final day of qualifing for the election. He’s one of 24 candidates in the race.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office arrests a 45-year-old driving school instructor for stalking and having inapproprate contact with a 15-year-old femal student. Angel Owens of Sulphur faces several charges after she allegedly gave an iPhone to the victim and threatened violence if she told her parents. Detectives found over 12-thousand text messages on the phone, some of the messages included inappropriate sexual language.

The state Department of Revenue has put out a warning that scam artists are attempting to steal money or personal identification information from Louisiana taxpayers. L-D-R spokesperson Byron Henderson says one woman in East Baton Rouge parish received a phone call in which she was told she pre-qualified for a program that could help her resolve a tax lien…:

The son of LSU Coach Les Miles, Ben Miles, has committed to Nebraska, despite receiving a scholarship offer from his dad. Ben Miles is a fullback at Catholic High and helped the Bears win their first state championship last season

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow morning for ULM’s new four-point-one million dollar end zone facility. It’s the first athletic facility in ULM history to be funded completely by private donations and it’s the first atheltic facility to be built on campus since 1983. The facility contains a new locker room, new coaches offices and a Hall of Fame area.

Former Ragin Cajuns star Jonathan Lucroy is heading to the Texas Rangers. The All-Star catcher, who rejected a deal to Cleveland on Sunday, was sent to the Rangers by Milwaukee in a five-player deal. The Rangers also get Carlos Beltran in a trade deadline deal with the New York Yankees.

Over 400 new laws take effect in Louisiana today. One of the new laws calls on municipalities to post visible signs within 500 feet of red light camera intersections. New Orleans Senator Troy Brown says if those in support of the red light cameras truly have the best interest of drivers in mind – then they should have no problem with this law…:

Also going into effect today is the stripper age law, meaning girls under 21 can’t dance in an exotic club. John Geiger is a bouncer at a stripclub in Port Allen. Geiger says this means dancers under the age of 21 will have to perform other jobs in the establishment or go out of state, which could be more dangerous…:

A new law went into effect today regarding red light cameras that issue traffic tickets. It says a sign must be posted alerting motorists that ticket writing cameras are present at the intersection. The author of the legislation, New Orleans Senator Troy Carter says if a city or parish fails to comply, they can’t use photographic or video images collected by the camera to impose a fine on a citizen. He says the goal is to prevent people from running red lights, period…:

The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s office says a West Monroe man is dead after falling off the roof of a home that’s under construction in the St. Luke Area. Deputies believe 54-year-old Donavan Labbe fell 18 to 20 feet to his death.

More endorsements were handed out in the US Senate race. The Jefferson Parish Republican Executive Committee says its backing Republican Congressman Charles Boustany. While Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy says he has the support from former GOP governor Mike Foster.

Starting today, strip clubs in Louisiana can no longer have anyone under the age of 21 dancing. Many strip club owners are not happy with this new law. John Geiger works at a strip club in Port Allen and says the dancers are just trying to earn a living…

A new law goes into effect today that means strippers at clubs in Louisiana will have to be at least 21 years old and sources say the dancers are considering legal action. John Geiger is a bouncer at the Crazy Horse club in Port Allen. Geiger says this means dancers under the age of 21 will have to perform other jobs in the clubs or go out of state, which could be more dangerous.

Geiger says he knows there are concerns about sex trafficking, but he says he’s never seen that happen at any of the clubs he’s worked. He says the dancers are just trying to earn a living.

Henderson says scammers often use public information to target a taxpayer. He says another method tries to convince people to reveal private financial information, which is called ‘phishing.’

Many of these scam artists claim to be with the Department of Revenue, the IRS, or other state agencies. Henderson says they will never contact a taxpayer to request personal information over the phone, instead they will typically request some form of documentation.

Adam Einck with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says 5-year-old Ethan Hancock and his father were frogging in the Intracoastal Waterway when they ran out of gas. He says the father tried paddling out, but two barges came too close to their mudboat, so they jumped into the water.

Einck says they were both wearing lifejackets. He says the boy’s body was recovered at 7:30 yesterday morning, and father was not injured in the incident.
