LSU running back Leonard Fournette says he’s ready to go for Saturday’s season opener against Wisconsin. Fournette enters the season 13 rushing yards shy of reaching three-thousand for his career. He will likely become the fastest player in school history to three-thousand rushing yards. Fournette is set to play in his 26th collegiate game and Head Coach Les Miles says that kind of experience should benefit him well…

Saints Coach Sean Payton said today the starters will play in Thursday night’s preseason finale against Baltimore, including quarterback Drew Brees. 2006 was the last time Brees started in the preseason finale. The first-team offense has struggled in the preseason. The team is also looking to improve its pass rush. They’ve traded a conditional seventh round pick to Miami for defensive end Chris McCain and pass-rushing linebacker Paul Kruger visted the team today. Two years ago, Kruger had 11 sacks for the Browns, but last year the 30-year-old only had two and half sacks.

In news regarding former LSU players….the Chargers have released quarterback Zach Mettenberger. The Detroit Tigers have called up Jacoby Jones to the major leagues. Jones will make his major league debut tonight and start at third base and bat eighth as the Tigers host the White Sox, who will send Anthony Ranaudo to the mound.

Former Ragin Cajuns star Ladarius Green has been placed on the physically unable to perform list by the Pittsburgh Steelers, which means he’ll miss the first six weeks of the NFL season. Green signed a four-year contract in the offseason with Pittsburgh. Some believe he’s dealing with recurring headaches from multiple concussions.

Tropical Depression 9 in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to become Tropical Storm Hermine by this evening. Alek Krautmann with the National Weather Service says right now the area of low pressure is not expected to have an impact on Louisiana, expect for high tides along the coast in southeast Louisiana.

Krautmann says currently the tropical depression is moving at about 7 miles per hour to the north, northwest but later tonight we’ll see a gradual turn to the northeast. He says a ridge of high pressure is pushing it towards Florida.

Krautmann says the current forecast anticipates this will remain a tropical storm as it moves toward Florida but the Hurricane Center brings it right up to 60 mile per hour strength before landfall on Thursday…

The state Department of Health has confirmed more mosquito-borne illnesses in Louisiana, including Zika and West Nile Virus. Louisiana Medical Director for the Center for Community Preparedness, Dr. Frank Welch, says there have been 14 cases of West Nile Virus so far this year. But he says these cases are not flood related.

Welch says right after the flood we see a decrease in mosquito populations because they drowned. But he says we could see more West Nile cases soon, as mosquitoes will come back in higher numbers because of all the standing water from the flood.

The Cessna went down Saturday night and the Director of Aviation at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport Ben Morris says a large crane brought the bodies and aircraft out of the water…

Authorities have yet to identify the victims. But media reports say a passenger Briana Davis escaped and was rescued that night, but the pilot and Davis’ boyfriend, Baton Rouge tattoo artist and rapper Reginald Hilliard Jr., died in the crash. Morris says the couple chartered the airplane to do a nighttime tour of New Orleans Saturday night. He says the plane hit a thunderstorm during its approach to the airport.

Higgins will not start because he was arrested on DWI charges before the start of fall camp. Higgins could play against Arkansas. The Razorbacks are known for their power run game and Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says it will be a test for his defense…

Smith was a three-star recuit coming out of Mississippi and he’s filling in for Ryan Higgins, who will not start, after he was arrested on D-W-I charge right before the start of preseason camp.

Grambling State football coach Broderick Fobbs announced that wide receiver Chad Williams is suspended for the season opener against Virginia University of Lynchberg. Williams was arrested last May and charged with possession of marijuana and guns.

Saints Coach Sean Payton said today that they may move struggling offensive lineman Andrus Peat to left guard. Payton says when they drafted Peat in the first round, they envisioned he would play on the right side, but so far during this preseason, it isn’t working out, so he may move to left guard. New Orleans final preseason game is Thursday night at home against Baltimore.

The search continues in north Louisiana for three inmates who escaped from the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on Saturday. Authorities say Michael Elliot, Walshea Mitchell and Willie Ethridge scaled a fence with two rolls of razor wire to gain freedom. The three men are serving time for convictions that range from attempted to second-degree murder to theft. If you spot one of these escaped jail birds, contact 9-1-1.

Overall, at least 1,245 people died in Hurricane Katrina and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest US hurricane since the 1928. 13 fatalities have been confirmed following the recent flooding, and Nungesser says it’s incredible that number isn’t higher…:

Nungesser feels that FEMA is doing a great job this time around of getting to people quickly and providing information needed on what steps to take to make the rebuilding process go as smooth as possible. Commissioner of Agriculture Mike Strain announces pets that were lost in the flood are being moved from the shelter at the River Center to a new shelter at the Dixon Correctional Institute in Baton Rouge. He says the move comes as a result of a donation from the Humane Society.

Strain says the River Center shelter was for short-term housing of these pets, and the new shelter will be better for long term care, as there will be a vet hospital on site.

LSU safety Jamal Adams says he might do the Lambeau Leap if he returns an interception for a touchdown…

The last time LSU opened the season in Big Ten country was in 1977 when Charlie McCLendon’s Tigers lost to Lee Corso’s Indiana Hoosier by the score of 24-21.

Last year’s starting quarterback at McNeese State, Daniel Sams, has been arrested by Lake Charles police for his alleged role in a fatal home invasion on August 12th. Sams bond has been set at 200-thousand dollars.

The Saints who are winless in the preseason have one more exhibition game left and it’s this Thursday at home against Baltimore. Coach Sean Payton says they have two weeks left before the first regular season game and there’s still time to correct the mistakes that are being made…

Payton told reporters today he’s considering moving second-year offensive lineman Andrus Peat to left guard. Peat played left tackle and left guard last season and hasn’t adjusted to right guard as quickly as the coaches wanted.

Former Saints tight end Benjamin Watson is likely out for the season after tearing achilles tendon. Former Louisiana Tech star Kenneth Dixon was also injured in that game. The rookie Ravens running back injured his M-C-L in his knee and is it out at least four weeks.
