The over 350 individuals who remain at a shelter at the Baton Rouge River Center will be shifted to another shelter today, because the River Center needs its facility for upcoming events. State Senator Troy Brown pleaded “no contest” today to an allegation that he punched his longtime girlfriend in the eye. The incident took place at a New Orleans hotel following the Bayou Classic Football game. A judge handed Brown a suspended six month sentence after the plea. Brown represents parts of St Charles and St. John the Baptist parishes.

The Obama Administration has sent a $2.6 billion request to Congress for Louisiana flood relief assistance. Congressman Garret Graves says it will be an uphill battle to get the request approved. The Baton Rouge Republican says the Louisiana delegation is trying to make Congressional leaders understand the impact of this flood…:

LSU Football Coach Les Miles said today on the SEC teleconference that he can’t imagine Danny Etling not taking the first snap against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday night. Etling replaced a struggling Brandon Harris in the second quarter in last Saturday’s 34-13 win over Jacksonsville State. Etling led the Tigers on three consecutive touchdown drives. Miles says they spoke to Harris about being ready to play if they need him….

Saints Coach Sean Payton said today that they had to cut running back CJ Spiller, because they needed to open a roster spot so they could sign a cornerback to replace the injured Delvin Breaux. Breaux is out six weeks with a broken fibula. B-W Webb who has some NFL experience was signed to add cornerback depth. The release of Spiller means the Saints lead the NFL in the amount of dead money, meaning the amount of money the franchise is paying to players who are not on their team.

Breaux was one of three Saints players who did not practice today. The other two are linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, with a quad injury and tight end Josh Hill with an ankle injury. Tackle Terron Armstead was limited with a quad.

The Pelicans announced the signing of free agent guard Lance Stephenson. Stephenson split time last season with the Clippers and Grizzlies and averaged eight points and three rebounds a game. During the 2013-14 season, he led the NBA in triple-doubles with the Pacers, but hasn’t been the same player since.

Lamar Advertising CEO Sean Reilly is on this panel and says they are not only looking to assist homeowners, but small businesses impacted by the floods in north and south Louisiana this year….

Governor John Bel Edwards announces the creation of the Restore Louisiana Task Force, which will oversee flood recovery and redevelopment. The task force is comprised of 21 members ranging from cabinet secretaries to state lawmakers and local mayors. There are also business people on the panel, including Lamar Advertising CEO Sean Reilly who was on the Louisiana Recovery Authority, which was formed after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Reilly says the task force will push for extra federal aid to help flood victims, because the majority did not have flood insurance. He hopes we learn lessons after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita when it comes to the rebuilding of homes…

Enrollment at Nicholls State University is up for the first time since 2009. Nicholls President Bruce Murphy says they saw an increase of 103 students, which is just over a 1% hike. He says they have improved their recruitment by empowering recruiters to give scholarships to potential students.

Murphy says as a result of their recruiting efforts, freshmen applications were up 300 over last year. He says even after the confusion over TOPS, having to increase fees, and the flooding, their enrollment is still went up.

Saints Coach Sean Payton says they had to release running back CJ Spiller in order to sign a cornerback, because of the injury to Delvin Breaux. Governor John Bel Edwards announces I-10 will be widened from four to six lanes between Highland Road in Baton Rouge and Highway 73 in Ascension Parish. He says about 30-percent of the traffic on I-10 is moving commerce. But he says this project will benefit all drivers.

State Department of Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says the project will cost more than 60-million dollars, but the state plans to use 40-million dollars in federal monies to get the project started.

The Saints have reportedly released running back CJ Spiller. Spiller was inactive for the season opener, even though he’s healthy. Coach Sean Payton said the game plan was the reason why Spiller didn’t play. Spiller never lived up to expectations in New Orleans after signing a four-year deal with the Black and Gold in 2015. His first season was injury plagued.

So is LSU football coach Les Miles surpised that he had to bench quarterback Brandon Harris after just five quarters. Miles says they scripted and rehearsed their first few plays going into the first two games of the season and he expected that Harris would play well…

American Cancer Society volunteers from Louisiana and many other states were in Washington, D.C, today rallying for more funding for cancer research. Director of the LSU Health Stanley S.
