Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi says he’ll interview with the team next week as the franchise begins to ramp up its search for a permanent head coach. A southwest Louisiana resident is the first person in the United States to die from the bird flu. State health officials say the patient was over 65 years old and had underlying health conditions and contracted the virus through exposure to a backyard flock of wild birds. Christofferson says the overall public health risk is low, individuals working with birds, poultry, or livestock face higher exposure risks. To prevent H5N1 infection, people should avoid contact with sick or dead birds and their droppings and keep pets away from contaminated animals.

Christofferson says workers in poultry or dairy farming are advised to get a seasonal flu vaccine to reduce the risk of co-infection with influenza viruses, though it does not protect against avian flu.

Five parishes in North Louisiana are under a winter storm watch for later this week.  The five parishes are Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne and Union Parishes. National Weather Service Meteorologist Brandon Thorne says the winter storm watch goes into effect Thursday morning and goes into Friday afternoon.

This will likely bring widespread rain south of I-20, freezing rain north of I-20, and Thorne says significant snowfall near and north of I-30, where heavy snow accumulation is possible.

Temperatures will stay frigid throughout the event, with highs only in the 30s and lows in the 20s.  Thorne says travel could become hazardous, and monitoring updates closely is crucial as this storm could significantly disrupt the region.

Jeremy Alford, the publisher of LaPolitics-dot-com, says Landry set a new standard in moving quickly on his agenda, which not only included the biggest tax overhaul in decades, but it also included consolidating his power as governor.

Alford says Landry greatly boosted his national profile in his first year as governor.

As for Landry’s agenda for year number two, Alford says one of his biggest focuses will be on public safety, particularly in New Orleans.

One of college athletics most popular athletes is glad she’s back for her fifth and final year of eligibility. LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne had strong performances on the balance beam and floor on Friday as the Tigers began defense of their first national championship with a win over Iowa State. Dunne says it was a blast performing again at the PMAC…

Dunne is one of the most followed college athlete on social media. On3.com says Dunne’s NIL valuation is 4.2 million dollars, the most of any female athlete. The New Jersey native could have pursued a career as a model and influencer full-time. McNeese men’s basketball knocked down a season-high 16 three-pointers as the Cowboys defeated Northwestern State 92 to 69 in Natchitoches last night. D-J Richards made six threes, and led all scorers with 20 points. The Cowboys improve to 4-and-0 in the Southland, while the Demons fall to 3-and-1.

Jakevion Buckley had 25 points as Southeastern Louisiana defended its home floor and beat U-T Rio Grande Valley 79 to 75, Nicholls went to Commerce and defeated East Texas A-and-M 83 to 61.

Southern improved to 2-and-0 in the SWAC as the Jaguars defeated Prairie View A-and-M 84 to 80.  A-J Barnes had 19 points and nine rebounds. Grambling fell to 0-and-2 in the SWAC with a 71 to 66 loss to Texas Southern.

The LSU men’s basketball team looks to rebound after dropping its SEC opener to Vanderbilt on Saturday. Tonight the Tigers are at Missouri, who also started off conference play with a loss.

Prior to the service, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the federal Department of Homeland Security has agreed to designate the Carnvial season as a level one event. That’s the same rating the Super Bowl gets, which New Orleans is also hosting next month. It means the federal government will provide additional resources to make sure Mardi Gras parades are safe. Publisher of the Mardi Gras guide Arthur Hardy says the beefed-up security will involve not only things that people will see, including law enforcement in tactical gear, but also what people WON’T see.

It was the story of the 2024 New Orleans Saints – they couldn’t hold a late lead. That was the case in Tampa yesterday as the Saints coughed up a fourth quarter lead and lost to the Buccaneers, 27-19, to finish their dismal season with a record of 5-and-12. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi said he was disappointed with the outcome but not the effort.

The Saints will have the ninth overall pick in the first round. It’s New Orleans first top ten pick since 2008.

The Detroit Lions captured the number one seed in the NFC with their win over the Vikings. That means Detroit gets a bye in the postseason and it also gives the Saints a chance to interview Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn was the Saints defensive backs coach from 2016 to 20200 and he can be interviewed virtually until January 13th.

The Pelicans have won two in a row after beating an equally bad team, the Washington Wizards, twice over a three day period. NOLa-dot-com columunist Jeff Duncan expects big changes with the franchise in 2025…

Louisiana wages have grown 25-percent since 2019 according to a report by the Committee of 100 for Economic Development. Committee of 100 CEO Adam Knapp says that type of wage growth is solid, but it lags the Southern average. But Knapp says the Meta Artificial Intelligence data center coming to Richland Parish should help…

The new year means changes to state’s unemployment laws. The number of consecutive weeks a person can be on unemployment has been decreased from 26 weeks to 12 to 20 weeks depending on the state’s unemployment rate. Robert Wooley with the Louisiana Workforce Commission says the state is also cracking down on unemployment fraud and will pursue legal action in certain cases…

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says President Joe Biden has granted Mardi Gras a level one Special Event Assessment Rating, which is the highest potential threat rating the federal government can give to an event. Mardi Gras usually receives a level two rating, but Cantrell says a SEAR 1 rating means they’ll have more federal resources….

Cantrell has also asked for the federal government to provide a tactical expert to review the city’s security plans.

Louisiana is experiencing its coldest temperatures of the winter as highs this week will be in the 40s and by the end of the work week, we’ll see high temperatures in the 30s for central and north Louisiana. LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim says it’s been a mild winter up until this point…

And the National Weather Service says there’s the possibility of wintery precipitation Wednesday night, into Thursday morning for the western side of the state.

The Committee of 100’s (C100) year-end economic report says wages statewide have increased 25-percent since 2019, with the average weekly wage nearly 12-hundred dollars. Committee of 100 CEO Adam Knapp says the state has made progress in bringing in more higher paying jobs, but there’s still more work to do…
