The Louisiana National Guard says over 300 of their soldiders and airmen have returned from a deployment to Puerto Rico to help the island nation recover from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The Guard says the soliders cleared roads and helped electric companies restore power.

Houma native Jay Clune has been named as the next president of Nicholls State. Clune graduated from Nicholls and will begin serving as the leader of the Thibodaux school after the new year. Clune says he’s ready to take ideas on how to make Nicholls an even better university…

LSU heads out tomorrow to play Tennessee in Knoxville. Edge rusher Arden Key and linebacker Donnie Alexander remain questionable as both did not practice yesterday. Head Coach Ed Orgeron said on his radio show last night that starting left tackle K-J Malone also remains questionable, but O did say he’s walking around and looking much better.

There’s college football in the state tonight as Southeastern Louisiana faces Nicholls State. Colonels Head Coach Tim Rebowe says they are worried about the Lions explosive offense…

The Colonels are 8-and-2 overall, 7-and-1 in the Southland and still in position to earn a berth into the F-C-S playoffs,.

The Pelicans had their three-game winning streak snapped last night as they lost to Toronto 125-116. New Orleans is now 8-and-7 on the year and have yet to beat a team with a winning record. The Pels are at Denver on Friday.

Tonight, the LSU men’s basketball team looks to go 2-and-0 on the season when they host Samford. The Tigers are comign off a 40-point season opening win over Alcorn State. Samford is 1-and-1 on the year, a season opening loss to Arkansas and a victory over Alabama A-and-M.

Also tonight, ULM hosts Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling is at Iowa. Last night SMU downed Northwestern State 81-35.

65-year-old Wilbert Jones became a free man today after serving over 45 years in jail in connection with a 1971 rape and kidnapping of a Baton Rouge nurse. State District Judge Richard Anderson threw his conviction out, because he determined the case against Jones was weak and the prosecution withheld evidence. The TSA has put in a new policy for those who fly out of Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Effective immediately, any electronic larger than a cellphone must be taken out of a carry-on bag when going through security. TSA Spokesperson Sari Koshetz says if your traveling with an I-Pad or lab top, take it out of the bag and place it into its own bin to help the security checkpoint run efficiently…

State officials are gradually introducing 23 juvenile whooping cranes from Wisconsin, Maryland and Canada to the wild in Louisiana as part of the state’s effort to grow the population of the rare, endangered birds. State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist Sara Zimorski says 12 of the birds were brought to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge on the southwest Louisiana coast where three cranes recently hatched…

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine says Mike Seven, the school’s live mascot that arrived on campus in August, has added 100 pounds of weight during his first three months in Baton Rouge. The 14-month old Tiger now weighs about 270 pounds and the Bengal-Siberian mix is expected to keep growing until he’s about four or five years old.

Sixty-five-year-old Wilbert Jones, who spent almost 46 years in prison was set free today after his conviction for kidnapping and raping a Baton Rouge nurse was recently overturned. A judge said there was evidence withheld by the prosecution that could have exonerated him. The group the Innocence Project worked for 15 years to free Jones. According to the Associated Press, Governor John Bel Edwards recent trip to Puerto Rico to discuss ongoing hurricane recovery cost taxpayers 51-hundred dollars. Much of the cost went towards security detail.

The governor attended a ribbon cutting ceremony today for a new emergency room in north Baton Rouge. It cost the state over five-million dollars to build the facility.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy says he’s successfully added an amendment to the Senate’s tax reform legislation that would provide 200-million dollars in tax relief for thousands of Louisiana residents who were impacted by last year’s August flood. The legislation still needs approval from the entire Senate and House.

Members of the Louisiana Congressional Delegation are not happy about a bill the House passed to overhaul the National Flood Insurance Program. Richland Parish Representative Ralph Abraham says the measure would mean higher premiums and doesn’t make strong enough reforms to mitigate flood risk. He hopes the Senate has a better bill…:

The state has added 23 juvenile whooping cranes to the Louisiana flock as part of an effort to re-grow the population, after the large white birds disappeared from the Bayou state in 1950. Louisiana Department of Wildlife Fisheries Wildlife Biologist Sara Zimorski says these young birds join 49 other cranes. She says they re-introduced whooping cranes to Louisiana to 2011.

Wilbert Jones walked out of prison today, a free man after spending nearly 46 years behind bars for a conviction that was thrown out by a Baton Rouge judge because the prosecution hid evidence that could have exonerated him. There is a law that allows wrongly convicted individuals to receive compensation, but Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says Jones’ case may not qualify…

The busy holiday travel season starts next week and the Transportation Security Administration is asking passengers to make sure they don’t pack guns in their carry-on travel bags. T-S-A spokesperson Sari Koshetz says so far this year, six guns have been confiscated at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport and 52 from Louis Armstrong in New Orleans….

LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron said on the SEC Teleconference this morning that the kicking competition has been re-opened after Conner Culp missed two extra points and a field goal in the win against Arkansas. Jack Gonsoulin replaced Culp and made two extra points. Coach “O” also said Quarterback Danny Etling is feeling a lot better this week after tweaking his back before the Arkansas game.

In LSU’s first three SEC games, they allowed opponents to rush for 189 yards or more in each of those contests. The Tigers run defense has been much better since the Auburn game. Defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence explains why…

In SEC news, sources say Jeff Long has been fired as the athletic director at the University of Arkansas. Not a good sign for Razorbacks Head Coach Bret Bielema, who will not produce a winning season in Fayetteville this year.

Alabama is number one in the latest college football rankings and there are reports Texas A-and-M is interested in Florida State Head Coach Jimbo Fisher.

College basketball last night…5th ranked Villanova beat Nicholls 113-to-77, while the Ragin Cajuns handled Louisiana College 113 to 58. Tonight, Northwestern State is at SMU and the Pelicans host the Raptors tonight at the Smoothie King Center. Toronto beat New Orleans by four last week in Canada.

A Louisiana man convicted of a 1971 kidnapping and rape of a Baton Rouge nurse is set to walk out of prison today as a free man after a judge overturned his conviction. State District Court Judge Richard Anderson called the case against 65-year-old Wilbert Jones weak and authorities withheld evidence that could have exonerated him decades ago. Jones’ family says they’ll have gumbo ready for him when he gets out.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is holding a large nuclear Prevention Exercise today on the Mississippi River near the Port of Baton Rouge. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says Operation Great River aims to find out how well Louisiana is prepared should we face this type of emergency…:

The Cost of Living Index shows Shreveport and Monroe are among the lowest cost of living cities in the country. Ragin Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth anticipates true freshman quarterback Levi Lewis will start in Saturday’s home game against New Mexico State, despite a sprained ankle.

The Saints have reportedly signed running back Jonathan Williams from the Denver Broncos practice squad. The former Arkansas standout appeared in 11 games with the Buffalo Bills last year. He joins the roster as back-up running back and special teams contributor Daniel Lasco will miss the rest of the season with a bulging disc. Lasco was carted off the field last Sunday and needs surgery, but Coach Sean Payton says the prognosis is good.

The Pelicans have won five of their last six after beating Atlanta 106 to 105 yesterday. New Orleans hosts Toronto tomorrow night. The Raptors beat the Pelicans last week. Toronto has won the last five meetings between the two teams.

Tonight in college basketball…Nicholls State is at 5th ranked Villanova in a game that will be shown on F-S One. The Colonels opened their season with a 111-106 win over Texas Rio Grande Valley.

UL Lafayette has its home opener tonight as the Cajuns host Louisiana College.
