The wife of LSU football coach Ed Orgeron nearly died in May of 2017. That’s according to a Sports Illustrated report. Kelly Orgeron, who was born with scoliosis, had two ten-hour surgeries to insert rods and screws into her spine and hips last year. One of the surgeons reportedly nicked her colon, caused her stomatch to swell, resulting in three weeks in the hospital and an additional surgery.

That woman who was pulled out of a burning car in Western Canada last week by a group of baseball players, including three from Southeastern Louisiana, continues to recover from her minor injuries. Evan Pace of Zachary was the first to get to 67-year-old Linda Jack, who was stunned her S-U-V ran off the road and started on fire. Pace says once they got her out of the burning vehicle, they took her to the nearest hospital….

State Police is reminding motorists about the three foot rule when passing bicycles following a fatal wreck on Saturday in St. Francisville that killed avid bicyclist and East Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Buddy Amoroso. Senior Trooper Bryan Lee says 21-year-old Nicholas Alexander of Lafayette failed to reduce his speed and move over when he attempted to pass Amoroso and another bicylist on LA 66

The 11th Annual National Suit Drive is underway through the end of July. The Louisiana Department of Corrections is once again partnering with Men’s Wearhouse and Refined by Fire Ministries as they collect suits to be given to offenders upon release, assisting them as they look for a job. CEO of Refined by Fire Ministries, Elaine Ellerbe, says it is a rewarding moment to see the change in a person when they receive the new suit.

And a new sales tax rate for Louisiana is in effect as a result of the tax plan agreed upon in the last special session. The sales tax rate dropped from five to 4.45 percent.

Now that the state has found a solution to the fiscal cliff with the passage of a sales tax bill, the focus in state politics will turn towards next year’s governor’s race. GOP House Chairman Lance Harris says Republicans remain committed towards reducing the size of state government, but that can’t happen with Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards in office…

The N-B-A’s Western Conference is even more difficult now for the Pelicans as LeBron James is leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for a second-time in his career for the sunshine and good weather in Los Angeles. The three time NBA champion has signed a four-year, 154-million dollar contract with the Lakers.

With James in L-A, could DeMarcus Cousins join him? League sources say the Lakers are trying to sign the 27-year-old unrestricted free agent. ESPN says Cousins has heard from the Lakers and the Pelicans since free agency began Sunday morning.

New Orleans has made one-free agent signing. Former Ragin Cajun and Gretna native Elfird Payton has agreed to a one-year deal with the Pels. In five seasons in the NBA, Payton has averaged 11 points and six assists a game, but he’s shot just 30-percent from three point territory.

Former LSU standout and Shreveport golfer David Toms won the U-S Senior Open yesterday as he shot three-under part for the tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Toms made two big putts on the last three holes, a 15-foot birdie that put him in the lead on 16 and then a 20-footer to save par on 17.

Louisiana High School football is mourning the death of former St. James Football Coach Rick Gaille, who led the Wildcats to three state championship appearances during his 19-year coaching career at St James. He won 169 games through the 2010 season. Gaille was diagnosed with cancer last year.

The USA Baseball Collegiate Team beat Chinese Taipei four to two on Sunday night as they scored all of their runs in the third inning. LSU’s Daniel Cabrera had the big hit, a two-run single to give the US a 3-0 lead.

Former LSU star Kevin Gausman pitched eighth innings to snap a streak of eight winless starts as the Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels eight to two.

State leaders have had a week now to stew about the results of the special session that ended with a 4.45 percent sales tax rate that fully funds most state programs. With the fiscal cliff in the rear view mirror, attention now turns to next year’s governor’s race. GOP House Chairman Lance Harris says the results of the session make it clear the state needs a conservative governor.

According to Yahoo sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Pelicans are one of four teams interested in Cleveland restricted free agent Rodney Hood. The 25-year-old wing man averaged nearly 15 points a game last season and shot 38-percent from three-point territory.

The LSU Board of Supervisors meets on Friday where they are expected to approve a huge salary increase for gymnastics coach DD Breaux, who is set to get a 47-percent increase to raise her annual salary to 405-thousand dollars. The LSU gymnastics team has finished in the top four in the country in the last three seasons.

LSU women’s basketball coach Nikki Fargas is set to get a three-year contract extension. The Lady Tigers have made the NCAA Tournament the last two years.

Big game for former LSU star Alex Bregman as he had four hits last night including his 13th home run of the season as Houston blanked the Blue Jays seven to nothing.

Arkansas is one win away from its first national championship in baseball. The Razorbacks took game one of the championship series of the C-W-S with a 4-1 win over Oregon State last night. The Hogs scored all of their runs in the fifth inning and had just two hits in that inning as Beavers starting pitcher Luke Heimlich couldn’t find the strike zone. Game two is tonight at 6 PM.

The Baton Rouge Soccer Club has reportedly fired one of its coaches after he was arrested on allegations he repeatedly sexually assaulted one of his female players in Connecticut several years ago. 42-year-old Adam Allerton is facing multiple counts of second and fourth-degree sexual assault. The executive director of the Baton Rouge soccer club said they took significant precautions to ensure the safety of their players.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission announced plans to close the current recreational, seven days per week red snapper season at 11:59 PM on July 8th. Depending on the number of red fish caught this summer, it’s possible the red snapper season will re-open during the weekends in August.

Texas Southern will introduce former LSU coach and player Johnny Jones as its new men’s basketball coach tomorrow. The DeRidder native spent last season as an associate head coach at Nevada, helping the Wolfpack reach the Sweet 16. He was 90-and-72 during his five seasons as LSU’s head coach. Jones replaces Mike Davis, who is now the head coach at Detroit-Mercy.

Anthony Davis missed out on receiving any end of the year awards at the NBA Awards Show last night. A-D was up for Defensive Player of the Year and M-V-P. Houston’s James Harden won the M-V-P as expected and Utaz Jazz Center Rudy Gobert won the 2018 Defensive Player of the Year Award. Former LSU standout Ben Simmons was named Rookie fo the Year.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees comes in at number eight in the NFL Network’s annual list of the top 100 players. It’s the first time Brees has been ranked in the top ten since the 2014 season. He set an NFL record last season with a 72-percent passing percentage.

Alabama three-star linebacker Kendall McCallum becomes the 18th commitment of the 2019 recruiting class for the Tgiers. He’s six-foot-three, 235 pounds and also had offers from Louisville, Ole Miss and Missouri. He’s ranked by 24=7 sports as the 25th best inside linebacker in the nation.

LSU-Eunice’s Zach Hester has been named the national junior college division two player of the year. The right-hander from Texas was 13-and-1 with a 2.34 ERA with 133 strikeouts as he helped LSU-E win a national title.

Mississippi State has named Chris Lemonis as its new head baseball coach. The 48-year-old has led the Indiana Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons. Lemonis replaces interim coach Gary Henderson, who just led the Bulldogs to a surprise trip to the College World Series.

Game one of the championship series of the C-W-S was rained out last night. So they will try again tonight at 6 PM. Arkansas will send Blaine Knight to the hill. He’s 13-0 while Oregon State’s Luke Heimlich will go for the Beavers. He’s 16-2 on the year.

Argentina has reached the knockout round of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Nigeria. France and Denmark played to a zero-zero tie and Crotia won again by beating Iceland 2-1.

The traffic death of a Sterlington officer in 2016 has yielded a 15 year sentence for a 46-year-old Louisianan. Jeff Palermo has the story.

The man who struck and killed a Sterlington police officer, David Elahi with his car in 2016 was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. 46-year-old Tracy Govan was found guilty of vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injury in February. Govan’s Attorney, Louis Scott, says it’s a shocking sentence considering his client’s clean record and the fact that the crime was an accident.

Elahi was standing behind the fog line conducting a traffic stop when Govan’s vehicle crossed over the marker and struck three officers. Prosecutors say Govan was intoxicated, because two hours later he blew a .062 blood alcohol level, but Scott says thats not above the legal limit.

Elahi says it’s a gross over sentencing of his client, considering the sentences handed out for similar crimes in Judge Carl Sharp’s courtroom.

The fiscal cliff is officially gone as the Revenue Estimating Conference recognized 500-million dollars in revenue that will be used to shield TOPS, public colleges and most state agencies from cuts after July 1st. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne led the meeting, one day after the governor signed a new sales tax bill into law…

Most of the new revenue comes from the legislature’s decision to renew nearly half of an expiring one-cent sales tax. The Revenue Estimating Panel heard from the state’s legislative economist and then Dardenne called for a vote to recognize the money…

The Pope has appointed a new Bishop to preside over the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Bishop Michael Duca will be transferred from Shreveport, where he’s been for the last ten years. He’s replacing Bishop Robert Muench, who’s held the position since 2002. Duca says he didn’t see it coming, but he’s looking forward to serving the people of Baton Rouge.

Duca, who previously served in Texas, as well as Shreveport, says he’s got a lot to learn about the culture of the southern portion of the boot.

The state, and nation, has seen a rash of recent incidents involving misconduct from Catholic priests, including a recent confession from a father in Acadiana who admitted to sexual misconduct with a minor. Duca says if something like that were to happen under his watch, he wouldn’t hide it.
