Louisiana ranks at or near the top among all states in the prevalence of sexually transmitted illness. Dr. Andrea Giamalva (jee-ah-MAHL-vah), the chief medical officer at Experity, says reasons include stigma and limited routine screening.

Dr. Giamalva says STIs are especially prevalent among younger people in Louisiana.

Giamalva says especially with some STIs being asymptomatic, it’s important for anyone who’s sexually active to get regular screenings for STIs.

Giamalva says in Louisiana, urgent care centers are experiencing a high burden of STI cases, because people can get tested there and get their results as early as the following day.

This month, Lafayette-based Acadian Ambulance, the nation’s largest employee-owned ambulance service, is celebrating 54 years of service. Porter Taylor, Acadian Ambulance’s director of operations in Louisiana, commends the many medics who have continued to value its patients all these years.

The Saints are close to signing a new long-term lease that would keep the franchise playing their home games at the Caesars Superdome. Nola-dot-com reporter Jeff Duncan says it has been a difficult agreement to reach, because Saints Owner Gayle Benson is 78 years old and someone else will likely take over as owner at some point during the length of this deal…

Duncan says sources have told him the agreement calls for a ten-year lease followed by four five-year extensions, with the Saints retaining the right to exercise each extension. The lease agreement runs through 2055. But Duncan says it doesn’t guarantee that the team will stay in New Orleans. He says sources have told him the relocation penalty could only be as high as 250-million dollars…

Duncan expects the lease agreement will be announced next week, and he says that’s the first domino to fall in an effort to bring the Super Bowl back to New Orleans in 2031, but’s it’s not a sure thing…

Scalise says Americans should not turn to political violence, but instead follow Kirk’s example and turn to civil debate and the ballot box.

Southern University has cancelled classes and events through the weekend. The Baton Rouge school was one of several HBCUs to receive a threat. Southern University was under a lockdown for a period of time earlier today.

Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins says if you mock Kirk’s death on social media than you should receive a lifetime ban from all platforms.

The 31-year-old Kirk was fatally shot during speaking event at Utah Valley University. He was set to speak at LSU next month.

The FBI is offering a 100-thousand reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise was shot in an assassination attempt in 2017 and says in the United States, no one deserves to be murdered for their political views.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has entered a not guilty plea in a federal courtroom to corruption charges. Cantrell faces 11 criminal counts. Prosecutors allege Cantrell and her police bodyguard bilked the city’s taxpayers out of 70-thousand dollars in a scheme that allowed Cantrell and Jeffrey Vappie to carry out an affair, while the mayor claimed Vappie was performing work as her bodyguard. Loyola University law professor Dane Ciolino says if Cantrell is found guilty, she will likely do time behind bars…

Cantrell’s trial is expected to start after her term ends in January.

The Saints and the state are closing in on agreeing to a new lease with the Superdome. According to NOLA.com, it would keep the team in New Orleans for at least another decade.

 

Registered voters in Louisiana will soon get a letter from the Secretary of State informing them about the change to closed party primaries next year for several political races.  Deputy Secretary for the Secretary of State’s office Joel Watson says party affiliation is key to participating in party primaries.

Starting next year, registered Republicans can only participate in a Republican primary and registered Democrats in a Democratic Party primary. No party voters can choose which party primary they can vote in.

New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell entered a not guilty plea in federal court today. Cantrell allegedly spent 70-thousand dollars in city funds on personal activities that involved her former bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie. Paperwork was filed that showed Vappie was working, but prosecutors say they were having an affair.

The East Baton Rouge District Attorney is considering pursing the death penalty in the case of a man accused of raping a four-year-old child.

Florida will soon become the first state in the country to exempt all children from routine childhood vaccines as a condition of enrolling in school. Senator Bill Cassidy, who’s a medical doctor by trade, says it’s a bad decision.

Cassidy says the childhood vaccines have been administered for years; and up until now, school districts in all 50 states have required them.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is challenging you to perform at least one random act of kindness to animals over the course of the next 30 days. Founder and Director Jeff Dorson has some ideas.

According to the Center of Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety at LSU, DWI arrests increased by four percent from the previous year in 2024. Mark Lambert with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says increased law enforcement is helping keep the roads safer.

The number of people killed on Louisiana roads in 2024 dropped to its lowest level in five years. Lambert says the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission believes that’s because of less drunk driving and more people are buckled up.

Florida has announced they plan to repeal its vaccine requirements for children attending school. Louisiana U-S Senator Bill Cassidy believes that’s a bad idea and he’s not the only Republican to think that…

Florida’s Surgeon General says they are moving forward with this policy because he believes you have sovereignty over your body and that’s that.

 

 

The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s Office is considering seeking the death penalty against a man who allegedly raped a four-year-old child, infecting that child with a sexually transmitted disease. 25-year-old Anthony Jelks is charged with first-degree rape. District Attorney Hillar Moore says the biggest obstacle in pursuing the death penalty against Jelks is a 2008 Supreme Court decision that ruled that executing someone for a crime in which the victim did not die amounts to cruel and unusual punishment…

Moore says if the death penalty is not an option, Louisiana has laws that allow for chemical or surgical castration of a person convicted of raping a child.
