The Pelicans moved within a game of fifth-place Oklahoma City in the Western Conference standings as New Orleans defeated Charlotte 101-96 last night. Jrue Holiday had 19 points, including two big baskets with less than 2:30 minutes left. Anthony Davis also had 19 points, while DeMarcus Cousins had 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Pels begin a three-game homestand on Friday against Houston.

Nicholls State is all alone in first place in the Southland standings after beating Lamar 79-74. Senior guard Tevon Saddler led the way with 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Southeastern Louisiana entered the night tied for first place in the league, but the Colonels fell to Sam Houston State 75-65. The Lions have lost seven straight to Sam Houston.

Also last night, UNO defeated Northwestern State 73-67. The Privateers are 7-2 in the Southland, while the Demons are now 0-8.

The ex-leader of State Police did not respond to the more serious allegations of misconduct in an audit produced by the state legislative auditor’s office. An attorney representing Mike Edmonson issued a response today that says he does not have the type of resources needed to respond to the allegations outlined. One accusation is using a state facility for housing and not reporting it on his taxes. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says defending that accusation will be difficult…

The LHSAA Annual convention is underway in Baton Rouge. On Friday high school principals will vote on whether to end the playoff split in basketball, baseball and softball. North Vermilion Principal Tommy Byler says as a member of the executive committee, he made the proposal on behalf of basketball coaches around the state…

Byler also has a proposal to change how football schools are classifed. It’s an effort to reduce the number of teams who make the football playoffs with a losing record. Both items need a two-thirds vote to pass.

LSU has named one of its legendary players as Director of Player Development. Kevin Faulk, the school’s all-time leading rusher and three-time Super Bowl champion, will work with student-athletes on academic direction, social development and overall quality of life.

Maryland has named former LSU O-C Matt Canada as its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Terrapins Head Coach DJ Durkin says Canada has a unique ability to utilize any and all types of personnel and still produce extremely explosive offenses.

Former Ouachita High School head football coach John Carr has been named as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at ULM. Carr spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Jones County Junior College.

Tallulah has been struggling with water issues and now an electrical transformer failure has left the city without water today. Hard freezes hampered the system earlier this month. Administrative Assistant to the Mayor Yvonne Lewis says water was restored to the city Tuesday and now another catastrophe has hit…

A mobile trailer fire in Hammond has claimed one life. Preliminary findings from the state fire marshal indicates the deadly blaze was a result of the resident using an outdoor cooking burner to heat the trailer. No smoke alarms were found and Fire Marshal Butch Browning says that tends to be the case in most fatal fires…

Retired State Police Superintendent Mike Edmondson’s attorney has responded to a legislative audit that found evidence of misconduct and tax evasion throughout his nine year tenure. The letter touted Edmonson’s character and leadership, but Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says there was one notable omission.

Edmondson’s attorneys say at the moment he doesn’t have the resources to respond to each allegation. Ciolino says this may be due to the breadth of allegations.

In the two-page response, Edmonson’s attorney said the retired superintendent does not have the type of resources to respond, because a draft report was released early.

Tonight at 8 PM, the LSU men’s basketball team will look to snap its three-game losing streak as they host Texas A-and-M. The Tigers leading scorer, freshman Tremont Waters, has struggled in SEC play as he’s failed to score in double figures in three of the last four games. Coach Will Wade says he’s going through some adversity and this is a learning process for him…

Louisiana Tech released its football schedule for next season. The Bulldogs open the year at South Alabama and the home opener is the next week against Southern. Tech will travel to LSU on September 22nd and open Conference USA play by visiting North Texas on September 29th.

Republican Congressman Clay Higgins is cosponsoring legislation that seeks to make immigration and border security reforms. Higgins says there’s also provisions in the bill that would punish sanctuary cities. New Orleans currently prohibits police officers from asking suspects about their immigration status. Higgins is tired of these cities disrespecting federal laws…

Back in November, the Justice Department found no evidence that New Orleans is out of compliance when it comes to immigration laws.

University of Louisiana System President Doctor Jim Henderson is not happy to see the governor proposing a budget for next fiscal year that cuts TOPS by 80-percent. Henderson says cutting TOPS would be a betrayal of hard working students…

The recent cold snap could mean a delay in the strawberry harvest this year, and a possible increase in price at the grocery store.
