Tremont Waters scored 28 points last night as the LSU Tigers defeated Vanderbilt 88-78. Waters also had nine assists and set the school freshman record for assists in a season.

The LSU Tigers won their fifth straight game inside the Pete Maravich Assembly center as the Bayou Bengals beat Vanderbilt 88-78. The Tigers got a huge game from freshman point guard Tremont Waters who had 28 points. Wayde Sims added 16 points, while Aaron Epps added 15. LSU shot 63% from the field. They were 15-of-20 from the field in the 2nd half.

It looks like former LSU Tiger Jarvis Landry will have another season with the Miami Dolphins. The Fins placed the franchise tag on the wide receiver from Lutcher, which means he’ll get paid 16-million dollars in 2018, unless Landry and Miami can work out a long term deal. The team is using a non-exclusive tag, so another franchise can offer a contract to Landry, but they would owe Miami two first round picks if Landry left south Florida. The 25-year-old had 112 receptions last season to lead the NFL.

LSU’s bad start to the 2018 season got worse today. Coach Paul Mainieri announced shortstop Josh Smith will miss at least a month because of a stress reaction in his vertebrae. Mainieri said Hal Hughes will play shortstop during Smith’s absence.

In Starkville, former LSU hitting coach and Tulane star Andy Cannizaro stepped down as head coach of Mississippi State. It’s unclear what led to the move, but Cannizzaro released a statement that said he had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately he made some poor decisions. Cannizzaro added that he hopes the fans and people affected will one day forgive him.

On the baseball diamond tonight, Louisiana Tech has its home opener as they face McNeese State, who is winless on the season. Northwestern State is at ULM. Both teams are 2-1. Southeastern Louisiana takes on Alcorn State in Hammon, while UNO hosts Jackson State.

LSU hosts Vanderbilt tonight looking to improve its league record to 7-9. The Tigers have an RPI of 75 and we’ll need a few more wins to get on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. But Tigers Coach Will Wade says his team is focused on building momentum rather than looking ahead to Selection Sunday….

The House Ways and Means committee looked at various bills today that would make changes to the state’s tax code in an effort to reduce a billion dollar budget gap that starts July 1st. But it was clear during today’s discussion, many Republicans oppose tax increases, especially changes to the income tax brackets.

The state attorney general’s office has taken control of the state’s lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. There was a dispute between the governor and the A-G-‘s office on who should control the suit that accuses drug companies of making the opioid epidemic worse. Chief Deputy for the Attorney General, Bill Stiles, is optimistic the suit will be successful…

And with a one-billion-dollar shortfall, it’s unlikely extra money will go towards the 47-thousand public school teachers. The picture had the caption: “If we want to make America great again, we will have to make evil people fear punishment again.” Tangipahoa Parish council member  Louis Joseph says it was a bad idea.

The A-G’s Chief Deputy Bill Stiles says the state seeks damages for costs incurred within the Medicaid program.

Stiles hopes to expand the scope of the lawsuit into all state services effected, including corrections and family services.

Stiles says the suit is in the interest of all Louisianans, as the opioid epidemic is a problem that cuts across racial and class lines.

Stiles is optimistic that the suit will be successful in attacking the root of the epidemic, and help the state recoup the heavy cost of opioid addiction.

Huge news out of Starkville. Mississippi State Baseball Coach Andy Cannizaro has resigned and former Kentucky Head Coach Gary Henderson will serve as interim coach. In a statement, Cannizaro says he had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but made some poor decisions. He asks that the fans forgive him. In 2017, Cannizaro led State to a 40-27 record and an appearance in the Super Regionals. Cannizaro is a former assistant coach at LSU and had a standout playing career at Tulane.

LSU remains ranked after losing two of three to Notre Dame, but they dropped in all four major polls. They fell seven spots in D-1 baseball to number 23. The Tigers host UNO tomorrow night.

Last night, Nicholls won its first game by beating Stony Brook 14-7. Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts winless McNeese State. Northwestern State is at ULM.Both teams are 2-1.

The LSU football team is short at cornerbacks next season, but they are trying to use current players on the roster to build depth at that position. Cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond said on ESPN 104-5 in Baton Rouge last night that Mannie Neterhly will move from wide receiver to cornerback.

The State Transportation Department will begin work on the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles on March 3rd. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says they will replace the expansion joints on the bridge, initially closing one eastbound lane. Mallett says this work is part of a large scale job they plan to perform…

Officials hope to minimize the amount of accidents during the work on the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles.  Mallett says it’s important that drivers pay attention while driving in the work zone to avoid adding delays…

North Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham made no bones about his intentions to take a hard look at running for Governor. On the day when Governor John Bel Edwards took center stage at the capitol and opened the special legislative session, Abraham took a swipe at his potential opponent while speaking to the Baton Rouge Press club.

Three teens were arrested in connection with two alleged social media threats made against Tangipahoa Parish Schools. Sheriff Daniel Edwards says a 17-year-old female and a minor are charged in spreading a post that said, “Don’t go to school Monday.  A school shooting is going to happen and they are warning everyone.” Edwards says that resulted in his deputies sweeping the school before allowing students on campus…

Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the legislature, calling on the state’s governing body to put party politics aside to fix the impending fiscal cliff that triggers July 1st after a series of sales taxes expire. If no deal is struck, TOPS, higher Ed, and healthcare would see massive cuts. Edwards says it’s time to put party aside for the future of the state.

The governor called on lawmakers to adopt his plan that would reduce the state sales tax, and replace the funds by widening the tax base, removing certain business sales tax exemptions, and compressing income tax brackets. Edwards says funding popular state programs should be every legislator’s objective.

Because the fiscal cliff is a revenue issue, it must be addressed in a special session. Edwards says putting a deal off until a possible June special session would have major repercussions for the 2018-2019 college academic year.

Will Wade’s LSU men’s basketball team is close to completing an astonishing turn around less than a year after the Tigers bottomed out at 10-21 last year. A win tonight versus Vanderbilt would give LSU 16 victories and guarantee a winning record for this season.

The Bayou Bengals have won four straight league games at home after winning only 2 total league games last year. Wade says a big part of the turnaround is due to his team locking down the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

With a successful regular season almost in the books, many are wondering whether or not the Tigers will make this year’s NCAA tournament. Wade, who led VCU to the tournament as head coach, says this LSU team is more focused on building momentum than looking ahead to a possible selection.
