Wade previously coached at VCU for two seasons. VCU has released a statement denying any NCAA investigation regarding Wade’s recruiting tactics at that school.

With 22 games left in the regular season, the Pelicans are tied for fifth place in the Western Conference. New Orleans won its sixth straight game last night with a 125-116 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Anthony Davis delivered another MVP performance with 53 points and 17 rebounds. New Orleans begins a three-game road trip in San Antonio tomorrow.

LSU football has announced that Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles will wear number seven for the Tigers in 2018. The wide receiver is eligible to play this season after sitting out last year because of NCAA transfer rules. He caught 69 passes for 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns in his last season in Lubbock in 2016.

Former LSU Tiger Donnie Jones has announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons. The punter from Catholic High in Baton Rouge goes out on top as he helped the Philadelphia Eagles win their first ever Super Bowl.

16th ranked LSU begins a five-game week by hosting Grambling State tonight at Alex Box Stadium. Cam Sanders will start on the mound for the Tigers. He failed to record an out in his last start against UNO. Coach Paul Mainieri’s pitching staff has only delivered one quality start on the young season.

UL Lafayette Head Coach Tony Robichaux has received a two-game suspension for excessive arguing after he was ejected from Sunday’s loss to Wright State.

What an absolute dominating performance by Anthony Davis as the Pelicans won their sixth straight as they defeated the Phoenix Suns 125-116 last night. Davis had 53 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots. During this six-game winning streak, A-D has scored 38 or more points five times and has eclipsed 40 points four times. Jrue Holiday added 20 points as New Orleans is now tied with Portland for fifth place in the Western Conference.

After winning eleven in a row, Grambling State has lost two straight. The G-Men fell to Mississippi Valley State 79-74 last night.

The state basketball tournament is underway in Alexandria. Yesterday,Christ Episcopal and Claiborne Christian advanced to the Division 5 state championships. In Class C…Plainview and Atlanta won their semi-final games and in Division 4, it was Houma Christian beating Vermilion Catholic in overtime. The Lady Warriors will face the top seed and the defending champion Lafayette Christian Knights on Friday night.

Today it’s the one- A semifinals. top-seeded Delhi faces Aracadia at 11:30 AM and the 4A semi-finals are today as well as top-seeded Benton takes on Warren Easton at 3 PM.

The LSU baseball team begins a five-game week by hosting Grambling State tonight at Alex Box Stadium. Coach Paul Mainieri is hoping starting pitcher Cam Sanders can pitch five or six innings in order to save the bullpen with a big week ahead. Sanders failed to record an out last week in a start against UNO. First pitch is at 6:30.

Flooding in north Louisiana remains a concern as a stubborn storm system dropped several inches of rain this weekend. National Weather Service hydrologist C.S. Ross says they are concerned about flooding on the Red River for the next several days….

The Ouachita River is also expected to crest in Monroe later this week as well as nearby bayous and rivers.  Areas in central Louisiana are also expected to get hit with high water as well further downstream on the lower Red River.  Ross says there isn’t a break from the rainy conditions…

Ross says if the predictions hold true, several roads will be impacted as the Red hits flood stage…

The Red River is expected to rise to 39 feet at Shreveport by Wednesday, six feet above flood stage.

LA ABLE is a new program that offers families with developmentally disabled members the opportunity to put tax deductible dollars in a safe state savings account to pay for future health and education needs. State Treasurer Jon Schroder says it gives families who, already facing a tough battle, a tool to help provide for their disabled loved ones.

Families can put in up to 14,000 dollars a year, to a max of 100,000 dollars.

Schroder says the money is invested safely, so you don’t have to worry about stock market turmoil putting your family’s finances at risk.

The fund operates similarly to the popular state educations savings program START, but Schroder says it’s not just for education, it covers health as well.

A slew of last minute amendments added to some revenue generating bills in the House Ways and Means Committee has bogged down the special session. Shreveport Representative Alan Seabaugh tacked a number of changes that did not go well with Democrat Marcus Hunter. Hunter says the amendments are so  in-digestible that this group of legislators might as well just go home.

Democratic legislators held the House proceedings at bay during the morning as nothing was moving.

The full House was set today to vote on tax bills that are needed for the state to solve a looming one billion dollar budget deficit. House Speaker Taylor Barras said they are looking for more direction from the Edwards administration on what tax proposals he supports. A spokesperson for the governor’s office tweeted out that Barras has not returned any of the governor’s phone calls.

There are flooding concerns along the Red River in northwest Louisiana and C-S Ross with the National Weather Service in Shreveport says it doesn’t help that more rain is on the way…

Ross says there are concerns backwater flooding can impact roads near the Red River and the more serious concerns for flooding are downstream in Natchitoches Parish and Alexandria. The Caddo Sheriff’s office has moved livestock from flooded waters in north Shreveport this morning.

The Pelicans take a five-game winning streak into tonight’s game against the Phoenix Suns. New Orleans beat Milwaukee 123-121 in overtime. Jrue Holiday stepped up his game after halftime and scored a game-high 36 points. New Orleans has won six straight O-T games and they are 7-2 in overtime games this season.

Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson is said to be in stable condition as he continues to battle the flu. He was admitted to Ochsner Medical Center last week.

Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball are outright Sun Belt champs for the first time since the 1999-2000 after beating South Alabama 88-71 on Saturday. UL Lafayette is 25-4 overall, 15-1 in the Sun Belt. They close out the regular season on Thursday by hosting Arkansas State and Little Rock on Saturday.

Yahoo Sports reports NCAA enforcement staff members have been investigating for the last six months the recruiting tactics of LSU Basketball Coach Will Wade. The NCAA apparently started doing work on the phone and in person not long after he was hired by LSU last March. But a source says the probe has stalled because of a lack of on-the-record specifics about Wade’s recruiting. LSU A-D Joe Alleva says his staff has not been contacted by the NCAA regarding any irregularities. LSU’s 2018 recruiting class is currently ranked third in the nation by Rivals-dot-com.

The Pelicans won their fifth straight yesterday in Milwaukee beating the Bucks 123-121 in overtime. New Orleans rallied back from an 18 deficit thanks to 36 points from Jrue (Drew) Holiday and Anthony Davis had 27 points. The Pels looks to stay hot tonight in the Smoothie King Center against the Suns.

Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson remains in the I-C-U as he continues to battle the flu. His doctors say the 90-year-old is in stable condition. Last Wednesday, New Orleans professional franchises said Benson had been admitted to the hospital because of the flu.

Baton Rouge Senator Dan Claitor is proposing a bill that would fine wreckless drivers for creating potentially dangerous wakes while driving through flooded areas. The bill would add a new specification to existing law that would fine drivers up to 500 dollars, with potential for 90 days in jail. Claitor says the legislation was inspired by flood horror stories from his constituents.

Claitor says passing the bill could help cut down on such incidents.

If the bill passes, Claitor says you’ll be able to report wreckless flood zone drivers to the authorities.

Taxes are down 14 percent for utility companies in the wake of the federal tax overhaul, but Louisianans haven’t seen lower rates. The Public Service Commission says they anticipate lower rates as a result, but Commissioner Lambert Boissierre says you could be waiting until summer to see the change.

Boissierre says the new tax structure means the PSC will have to redo its previous analysis that it sets every six months to a year for rate changes. He says there is a lot that goes into formulating the rates.

Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator is asking the Caddo Parish School Board, to allow some faculty and administrators to carry guns on campus.  Most Caddo Parish schools have a security guard or a resource officer, but he feels it’s not enough.  Prator says schools are an open door to criminals with weapons…

Teacher union groups oppose Prator’s proposal. President of the Red River United Union, Jackie Lansdale, says teachers are there to educate students and going beyond that to protect students is more than what they signed up for…

Two tax bills that will help the state overcome a looming one billion dollar budget deficit are heading to the House floor. Some Republicans were seeking to make permanent a quarter of a temporary one-cent sales tax. But Shreveport Representative Alan Seabaugh didn’t like the permanent part, so he changed the legislation so a quarter of the temporary one-cent sales tax stays until mid-2021

If this legislation becomes law, the state’s sales tax rate would be a four and a quarter percent until June 30, 2021. It’s currently 5-percent, but two years ago, the sales tax rate was four-percent. The measure also temporarily eliminates some sales tax breaks. Baton Rouge Representative Barry Ivey opposed it..

For Democrats to support the sales tax bill, they wanted the House Ways and Means Committee to remove tax breaks for middle and upper income wage earners who itemize deductions on tax returns. The panel did on a 10-7 vote. New Orleans Representative Walt Leger says these tax bills can stave off deep budget cuts..

It was all LSU last night in its matchup with Texas as the Tigers trounced the Longhorns 13-4 at Alex Box Stadium. The Bayou Bengals bats came out hitting in the first inning, scoring five runs off Texas ace Nolan Kingham. Kingham lasted just three innings and gave up eight runs.

Offensively, the Tigers were led by second baseman Brandt Broussard who was 4-for-4 with 4 runs driven in. Lead off man Daniel Cabrera drove in three runs as the Tigers had 16 hits. Zack Hess gave up two runs in the 2nd inning, but pitched six strong innings and struck out a career-high 10. Game two of the series is tonight at 6:30 with Caleb Gilbert pitching.

Elsewhere, Louisiana Tech thumped S-I-U Edwardsville 13-1. Chris Clayton drove in three runs. ULM swept a doubleheader Northern Kentucky. The Ragin Cajuns lost to Wright State 8-2 in the first game in the completely renovated Tigue (Teague) Moore Field.

The Pelicans returned from the All-Star break and they were pushed to limit but came away with a 124-123 overtime victory over the Miami Heat last night. Anthony Davis gave an MVP performance with 45 points, 17 rebounds, five blocked shots and five steals. During this four game winning streak, A-D has scored at least 38 points. New Orleans will be in Milwaukee to face the Bucks on Sunday afternoon.

The LSU Tigers are in Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs this afternoon at 1 PM. The Bayou bengals are looking to snap a five-game losing streak on the road. A win will give LSU an 8-8 record in the SEC and 17 wins on the year.

UL Lafayette can win an outright Sun Belt crown tonight as they visit South Alabama.

Grambling State goes after its 12th straight win as they host Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Other games of note, Nicholls State has a big game against UNO. and ULM goes after its fifth straight win when they take on Troy.

For LSU to win this weekend, they need to get off to better starts. Through four games this season, the Tigers have yet to receive a good outing from one of there starting pitchers.

In other action this weekend, the 4-1 Southeastern Louisiana Lions host 25th ranked UCONN. The Ragin Cajuns look for some offense against Wright State. It’s there first game in the completely renovated Tigue Moore Field. ULM outscored Northern Kentucky 13-10.

The Pelicans return to the hardwood tonight to host the Miami Heat. There are just 25 games left in the regular season and New Orleans currently occupies 8th place in the Western Conference standings. Just one game ahead of the Clippers and a half-game back of Denver and Portland for sixth place.

There’s three more regular season games left for LSU as they visit Georgia. It’s a winnable game for the Tigers who are trying to put themselves in the discussion to be one of the 68 teams to make the NCAA Tournament. But Coach Will Wade has asked his team team not to focus on the tourney talk…

After five days of stalled negotiations, lawmakers are optimistic legislation will begin moving forward when legislators convene Sunday afternoon.
