A Slidell couple is in jail facing multiple charges for drugs and dog fighting following an investigation by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.  Kevin Barnhart has the story.

US Senator John Kennedy has attached an amendment to an appropriations bill to keep taxpayer money from going towards first-class airline tickets for federal employees. Kennedy says there’s only two reasons why a federal worker should receive a taxpayer funded first-class ticket….

The Senator says a federal audit found that federal employees have been misusing allowable upgrades to ride first class in 56-percent of cases. He says in a recent three-year period an extra one-million dollars in taxpayer money went to unnecessary first class tickets…

In a report released last March, EPA Secretary Scott Pruitt allegedly spent 105-thousand dollars on first class flights in his first year on the job. Kennedy says if his amendment makes it through Congress, even agency heads will not be able to fly first class unless there’s a legitimate medical or security reason…

A four star quarterback from Alabama announced on Twitter he plans on attending LSU. Peter Parrish’s verbal commitment gives the Tigers 14 commitments for their 2019 class. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says Parrish can run a speedy 4.5 in the 40 and scouts say he’s improving as a passer

LSU has four quarterbacks competing to be the starter in 2018 and Moran says they have more signal callers on their way for a position that’s given the Tigers problems over the last decade

After a week of difficult negotiations the House has approved legislation that sets Louisiana’s sales tax rate at 4.45 percent through mid-2025. That  would be enough revenue to prevent cuts to higher education and the TOPS scholarship program next fiscal year. Baton Rouge Representative Paula Davis had this message before the critical vote

Since the first special session in February, lawmakers have struggled to figure out a way to renew part of an expiring one-cent sales tax. Democrats  pushed for half-a-cent renewal, while in this session Republicans sought four-tenths of a cent. They eventually comprised at .45 percent. Davis congratulates the two sides for coming together

The measure needed 70 votes to pass and it got 74. It brought a sigh of relief to lawmakers who have been trying to solve the fiscal cliff

Still waiting to see if the House has reached a deal on renewing a portion of an expiring one-cent sales tax to prevent deep cuts in higher education, TOPS and other state progams.

The Tax Foundation says Louisiana lawmakers should not rely on Thursday’s US Supreme Court decision to bail them out of their fiscal mess. The decision from the nation’s highest court allows states to collect taxes on purchases made through a business that doesn’t have a physical presence in that state. Tax Foundation’s John Buhl says Louisiana will first have to make changes to its complex sales tax laws, before they are able to cash in…

The LSU football program has received a verbal commitment from a four-star quarterback out of Alabama. Peter Parrish is ranked as the 11th best dual-threat QB in the 2019 recruiting cycle according to 24-7 sports.

Discussions behind the scenes continue in the Louisiana House as the lower chamber is unable to agree on a sales tax bill that would replace some of the revenue that’s set to fall off the books on June 30th. LaPolitics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says Governor Edwards and Democrats are seeking to renew a half-a-cent of an expiring one-cent sales tax, but Republicans support a point-four-percent renewal, which would result in cuts to the state budget…..

The Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee has sent a resolution to the full Senate that would suspend the expiration of the one-cent sales tax for 14 months. Senate President John Alario says it’s a back up plan, if a sales tax renewal bill is not approved by the House….

That one-cent is set to expire June 30th.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that states will now be able to collect sales taxes from online sales. The ruling gives states the authority to receive sales tax revenues on purchases made by consumers with a business that has no physical presence in that state. However, Tax Foundation spokesperson John Buhl says Louisiana’s sales tax laws are too complex for them to take advantage of this ruling…

A graduation ceremony will take place tomorrow night in New Orleans for 22 women who have been trained by Emerge Louisiana so they can run for political office. Executive Director Melanie Oubre tells us what these future candidates learned during their 70 hours of training….

Oubre says two members of their inaugural training class will run for an office this fall, while the others are gearing up next year when state legislative races are on the ballot.

The House was scheduled to meet at 9:30 this morning, but the chamber is relatively empty as behind the scenes negotitiations continue on a sales tax plan that would replace a portion of the over one-billion dollars in revenue that comes off the books when temporary sales taxes expire on June 30th.

House Speaker Taylor Barras addressed the lower chamber before they adjourned last night and said legislators are deadlocked. Barras says he plans to keep talking with the caucus chairs in the hopes an agreement can be reached….

The Governor and Democrats want a half-a-penny renewed of an expiring one-cent sales tax, while Republicans seek renewal at four-tenths of a cent in an effort to cut back on government spending. The governor’s plan would not result in any cuts. The special session must end on Wednesday night.

President Donald Trump has endorsed Acadiana Congressman Clay Higgins as he seeks a second-term in office this November. Higgins is facing a challenge from fellow Republican Josh Guillory. Mr. Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giulani will host a fundraiser for Guillory at Monday. The former New York mayor is dating Guillory’s political fundraiser.

The statewide average for regular gasoline is $2.59, which is a few cents lower than last week. But AAA Fuel Analyst Don Redmond anticipates the price at the pump to go up…

The state Revenue Deparment says it’s too soon for a definitive estimate on how much revenue the state will receive as a result of a US Supreme Court ruling that allows states to collect sales taxes from online purchases. L-D-R says the state currently receives sales tax from big internet retailers, like Amazon.

The statewide average for regular gasoline is down three-cents from a week ago, but AAA is anticipating a rise in prices at the pump, because demand is growing and inventories are decreasing. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says OPEC meets today and they will discuss increasing oil production….

The Pelicans used their only draft pick last night to select former Penn State guard Tony Carr in the second round. He led the Big Ten in scoring last season at nearly 20 points a game. The 20-year-old from Philadelphia is six-foot-five. General Manager Dell Demps says they think he can play multiple positions, but how he fits in with next year’s team is uncertain…

Two players from Louisiana were selected in the first round last night. Boston with the 27th pick selected former North Caddo star Robert Williams and Baton Rouge native Jacob Evans gets a chance to play with the defending camps as Golden State selected the small forward who played at Cinncinnati.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be without Quarterback Jameis Winston for the first three games as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the signal caller is facing a suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. And the Saints host the Bucs in the season opener. There was a report last November that Winston groped a Uber driver in Scottsdale, Arizona in March of 2016. A formal announcement on the suspension could come down today.

The House failed to pass a proposal to renew half a cent of an expiring one cent sales tax, as a way to generate revenue to avoid cuts to state services. The measure received 60 votes, but it needs 70 for passage.

Abraham says the House version of the Farm Bill also has provisions in it to help Louisiana dairy farmers. He says its an industry that has seen a sharp decline over the last decade as they’ve had trouble competing against the big dairy producers in Wisconsin…

Although average gas prices in Louisiana are lower this week than they were last, the current average is still forty-nine cents higher than this time last year.  AAA Fuel Analyst Don Redmond says soon those prices may be on the rise again.

How much could the price be increasing?  Redmond says the prices may be influenced by several factors.

Redmond says this time of the year does prove to put gas in high demand, and this year may very well see extreme masses of travelers hitting the roadways.

Some reports indicate OPEC could be looking at an increase in production which would likely help ease the global crude prices.
