The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Depression Two has formed way out in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s heading towards the Lesser Antilles, but not expected to impact Louisiana. Just this week, Colorado State University lowered its projected storm total for this season.

A state representative is now preparing to run for another elected position. Republican Rick Edmonds of Baton Rouge, has announced his candidacy for Secretary of State in the fall election. Edmonds says security of state elections is one of his top priorities.

Edmonds is the fourth announced candidate for this position. The others are AG Crowe, Renee Free and Julie Stokes.

The United States is set to implement 34-billion dollars in tariffs on Chinese imports starting tomorrow. China is expected to retalitate with 34-billion dollars of their own tariffs on US products, which is expected to hurt Louisiana soybean farmers. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves is watching the trade conflict closely….

Louisiana residents can now download a digital version of their driver’s license on their smart phone. State Office of Motor Vehicles Commissioner, Karen St. Germain, says the LA Wallet is the first digital driver’s license in the country..

In the two years since the death of Alton Sterling, legislation has been passed to try to address the gap in trust between some Louisiana communities and law enforcement. Matt Doyle has more.

It’s been three months since four-year-old Junior Phillips disappeared from his home in Claiborne Parish. Family members believe someone abducted Junior from the yard of his home near Howard Road. The FBI is offering a 10-thousand dollar reward for information to help find him.

More rain is in the forecast today as the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of central Louisiana and all of south Louisiana under a marginal risk for severe weather this afternoon. Rain is in the forecast for this weekend too.

Today marks the two year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, a black man who was killed after an encounter with two white Baton Rouge police officers. The tragic incident led for a call of improvement in relations between law enforcement and the public. State Representative Ted James says some strides have been made, but more work is needed….

U-S and China are set to impose billions of dollars in tariffs on goods imported between the two countries at midnight tonight. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says there’s risk when playing hardball on trade, but he says the risk may result in better trade prices…

Former LSU star Aaron Nola won his 11th game yesterday as Philadelphia defeated Baltimore four to one. Nola allowed one run and seven hits in his fifth straight decision. The Phillies have won four in a row and they trail NL East leading Atlanta by one and a half-games.

In Chicago, former LSU star Louis Coleman gave up a couple of runs in relief and the Cubs defeated the Tigers five to two. Chicago remains one game back of Milwaukee for the division lead in the NL Central.

Also yesterday, Houston rallied back from a four-run deficit to beat Texas five to four in ten innings. Alex Bregman was 1-for-4 with an RBI as the Astros have won eight straight over their in-state rivals. Houston also gained a game on Seattle in the American West as the Mariners lost to the Angeles seven to four. The Astros lead for first place is 1.5 games.

LSU Pitcher Zack Hess was very sharp last night in the United States 1-0 win over Japan. Hess started and threw three shutout innings and struck out four. But a rain delay of an hour and eight minutes ended his night.

The Ragin Cajuns softball program has signed a graduate transfer from Texas A-and-M. In three seasons at College Station, Keeli Milligan hit .339, scored 130 runs and stole 105 bases.

In college football….Georgia’s projected starting quarterback Jake Fromm broke his non-throwing hand in a boating accident on Monday. Fromm’s hand was reportedly fractured when a rope toeing his friend behind the boat came down on his hand. Bulldogs Coach Kirby Smart told ESPN the injury was insignificant and Fromm has already resumed throwing. LSU hosts Georgia on October 13th.

It’s another off-day at the World Cup in Russia. Quarterfinal play begins tomorrow. France faces Uruguay and Brazil will battle Belgium.

Today marks two years since the shooting death of Alton Sterling by former Baton Rouge Police Officer Blane Salamoni. Since then legislation was passed to address the gap in trust between some Louisiana communities and law enforcement. State Representative Ted James says they’ve had initial success with programs aimed at increasing training for cops on how to interact with communities they serve.

James says while the new, diverse group of cadets entering the force is showing great promise, he’s concerned by the attitudes of veteran officers who’ve resisted the changes.

The Pelicans roster for 2018-19 looks much different today after a wild day of NBA free agency. In a matter of a few hours, Rajon Rondo and DeMarcus Cousins left the Pels and signed one-year contracts with the Lakers and Warriors respectively. But New Orleans has replaced them with forward Julius Randle, who played really well for the Lakers in the second half last season. And former Ragin Cajun Elfrid Payton has signed a one-year deal and he’ll look to replace Rondo. Pelicans beat writer Scott Kushner of the Advocate says Payton is a poor shooter, but can handle the ball and play solid defense…

The 24-year-old Payton signed a one-year, 2.7 million dollar contract with New Orleans. The 23-year-old Randle signed a 2-year, 18 million dollar contract with a player option to opt out in year two.

A month from today, the LSU Tigers will report for August camp. Ohio State transfer quarterback Joe Burrow will finally get a chance to practice with his new team. But offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger says the coaching staff still has high hopes for the other three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster….

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Devin White and cornerback Greedy Williams have been named pre-season All-Americans by Sporting News. White led the SEC in tackles last season, while Williams intercepted six passes a year ago and held opposing quarterbacks to a 22.9 passer rating when targeted.

In World Cup Action today….England eliminated Columbia as they won on penalty kicks 4-3. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. England will play Sweden in the quarterfinals, who beat Switzerland 1-nil.

Big changes in the Big Easy as the Pelicans roster has been restructured during NBA free agency. Veteran point guard Rajon Rondo went to L-A, and All-Star Center Demarus Cousins is heading to Golden State. They’ve been replaced by former Ragin Cajun point guard Elfrid Payton and six-foot-nine forward Julius Randle. Pelicans beat writer Scott Kushner for the Advocate says it’s definitely a mixed bag for Pels fans, but could really pay off.

Payton, a native of Gretna, starred for the Rajun Cajuns, and was the tenth pick in the 2014 draft, playing four years in Orlando, before a stop in Phoenix last year.  Kushner says Payton is a poor shooter, but can handle the ball and play solid defense.

The 24-year-old Payton signed a one-year, 2.7 million dollar contract with New Orleans.

Julius Randle, a Dallas native, played one year at Kentucky before leaving college for the NBA, where he was drafted 7th in 2014 draft by Los Angeles. He missed his entire rookie year, but has grown steadily every year since then seeing a steady uptick in points and efficiency. Kushner says he’s a high upside pick up.

The 23-year-old Randle signed a 2-year, 18 million dollar contract with a player option to opt out in year two.

Good news for folks grabbing steaks for the 4th: the prices should be lower than last year for good quality beef. Cattle Producers of Louisiana CEO Dave Foster says this is one of the biggest days of the year for grilling all things beef. Despite what The Cooking Channel might tell you, Foster says don’t throw that steak in a pan or the oven.

Everybody knows about chuck for burgers and ribeyes for steak eaters, but for those looking to change things up, and get the most bang for their buck, Foster says grab a chuck.

And for those looking for a lower fat, more health conscience cut of meat, Foster says they’re definitely out there, even if they don’t measure up to the feeling of sinking your teeth into a juicy, fatty ribeye.

Law enforcement from around the country have been taking time out to participate in a lip-synching battle and many their vidoes have gone viral. But Acadia Parish Sheriff K-P Gibson released a statement today that said his deputies will not participate, as he says he would rather see them focus on criminal activity than a Face Book challenge.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission has supplied State Police and local law enforcement with grant money so they can have extra patrols during this week and their primary goal will be searching for impaired drivers. Commission executive director Lisa Freeman says have a plan in place before you consume alcohol…

During the five year period from 2012 to 2016, Freeman says over eighty percent of traffic fatalities over the holiday occurred in collisions involving impaired drivers.

Many NBA fans and analysts are already proclaiming Golden State as the champions of the 2018-19 season with the addition of Cousins, which gives the Super Team five All-stars.

When the Saints host the Eagles in November, Philadelphia will wear their home green jerseys. That’s because Eagles Coach Doug Pederson reportedly beat Saints Coach Sean Payton in a game of golf that needed a three-hole playoff to decide.

A new Sports Illustrated report says the wife of LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron, Kelly Orgeron, had a near death experience in May 2017. Kelly Orgeron was born with scoliosis and had two major surgeries last year. But during the first surgery, a surgeon hit her colon, causing her stomach to swell, which required an additional surgery and another three weeks in the hospital. The story by Ross Dellenger also discusses her battle with depression.
