The state department of treasury has sent over 44-thousand checks to Louisiana residents who are owed money. State Treasurer John Schroder says the four-point-two million dollars in checks comes from the state’s unclaimed property program…

Dollars in the unclaimed property fund are old checking accounts, payroll checks, insurance proceeds and other payments that are not claimed by their owners. The maximum check sent out is 15-hunded dollars.

A survey finds that Louisiana has the highest percentage of PlayStation users in the U-S, as 38-percent of gamers in the Bayou State say PlayStation is their favorite gaming console. A state parks official tells the Advocate that a sign in front of a popular state owned plantation that read slaves were well taken-care of and happy has been taken down. It’s unclear how long the sign was posted at the Rosedown Plantation in St. Francisville. About 850 people were enslaved there before the Civil War.

Grambling State men’s basketball will play in its first postseason tournament game in 39 years tonight when the Tigers visit Texas-Rio Grande Valley in the College-Insider-dot-com Tournament.

UNO is also in that tournament and tonight the Privateers host Johnny Jones and the Texas Southern Tigers.

Former Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis has signed with the Detroit Lions. Lewis will always be remembered in New Orleans, because he was the guy involved in the controversial no call in the NFC Championship game.

All 32 teams from the NFL were on hand to watch Louisiana Tech’s pro day. It was a chance for defensive end Jaylon Ferguson to show what he’s got after he was not invited to the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis. The potential first round draft pick ran a 4.75, in the 40-yard dash. Wide receiver and punt returner Teddy Veal had the fastest time at 4.64.

Former LSU baseball star Alex Bregman has reportedly agreed to a six-year, 100-million dollar contract to the Astros.

Last night in college baseball, the Ragin Cajuns downed Northwestern State eight to three, McNeese blanked Houston 1 to 0, Southern Miss upended ULM 5-4, Louisiana Tech trounced Mississippi Valley 21 to 1. Tonight, LSU hosts Nicholls.

Starting next school year, the Avoyelles Parish School System will become the second school district in the state to have classes just four days a week, instead of five. Superintendent Blaine Dauzat says a primary reason for the change is to attract more teachers to Avoyelles Parish, which is last in the state for teacher salaries..

Former Saints wide receiver and return Tommylee Lewis has signed with the Detroit Lions. He caught 20 passes during his three seasons in New Orleans. And the Back and Gold has reportedly expressed interest in trading for Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn. Dallas is also said to be interested in the 28-year-old pass rusher.

The LSU men’s basketball team arrives in Jacksonville today as the Tigers continue their preparations for their first round NCAA Tournament match up with Yale. 2006 was the last time LSU went to the Final Four and that season they also played the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Jacksonville, beat Iona and Texas A-and-M.

The Sun Belt Conference has named a new commissioner. His name is Keith Gill and the former Duke football player is the first African-American commissioner of an NCAA F-B-S conference. He’ll start on May 1st, replacing the retiring Karl Benson. Gill is currently the executive associate commissioner for the Atlantic 10.

In college baseball tonight, the Ragin Cajuns host Northwestern State, McNeese faces Houston in Lake Charles, Louisiana Tech hosts Mississippi Valley, Grambling visits Jackson State and U-L-M is at Southern Miss.

Seventh ranked LSU baseball returns to the diamond tomorrow night to host Nicholls. The Tigers have won four in a row since losing to Northwestern State.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser gave an update on the status of the four New Orleans Confederate monuments today on Talk Louisiana, saying he’s working to get the city to transfer control of them. There’s one major roadblock though, and that’s P.G.T Beauregard, who isn’t controlled by the city…

The monuments were taken down in 2017, sparking an intense series of standoffs in front of the statues in multiple areas of the city.

Rumors circulated after the monument’s removal that private citizens were cutting deals to have the statues transferred to their property, but Nungesser says none of those efforts were ever completed. Despite the initial failures, the Lt. Governor says some private citizens are still making an attempt.

Nungesser says right now the monuments are still being stored, and are not in the best condition at the moment, so he’s pushing to have the them transferred to a historic preservation group comprised of historical experts and academics who understand the history of the old statues.

Motorists on I-49 in the urbanized areas of Alexandria will see an increase in the speed limit. DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says today crews are changing out the speed limits signs in the area.

The remaining portions in the Alexandria will see an increase from 60 to 70 miles per hour.

Buchanan says the change will see plenty of benefits as many of the drivers are already accustomed to driving the new speed limit.

Buchanan says speed studies were conducted to calculate the optimal new speed for the area.

Many Food Stamp beneficiaries will be receiving their funds on a modified schedule next month as the program wraps up it’s government shutdown inspired scheduling changes. DCFS Division of Family Support Deputy Assistant Secretary Sammy Guillory says those who normally get their SNAP on the 10th through the 14th will instead get their funds on the 9th.

Guillory says they had to make the change to make sure some of their recipients did not end up going too long without their food assistance.

Guillory says this should be the last month featuring disturbances to the usual SNAP cycle, after months of having to continually modify the schedule due to SNAP gaps caused by the shutdown.

House Republican Caucus Chairman Lance Harris used today’s joint legislative budget committee to question Governor Edwards re-election claims that taxes have gone down during his term. The state representative from Alexandria says taxes are actually higher than they were when Edwards took office…

Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says a combination of cuts and tax increases were needed to overcome a massive budget deficit. Dardenne reminds Harris that deeper cuts to the state budget could have been made, but the state legislature never presented a plan

When tax increases were proposed, the Edwards administration warned of dramatic cuts to higher education and health care, if not approved.

Max Unger says he didn’t think he could make it through another season, which is why the longtime center for the Saints decided to retire, even though he was set to make five million dollars next season. Unger says a lower body injury has made it difficult for him to get into his stance and surgery would mean he would miss the entire offseason, which Unger didn’t want to do.

Pelicans point guard Elfird Payton recorded his fifth consecutive triple-double last night in an overtime win over Dallas. Only four other players have had five straight triple-doubles, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook. New Orleans is at Orlando on Wednesday.

The two Republican candidates for governor appeared together for the first time in Baton Rouge on Monday and they gave their thoughts on spending within the state’s Medicaid program, which has been expanded under current Governor John Bel Edwards to cover 500-thousand more adults. Congressman Ralph Abraham says if elected he would not undo Medicaid expansion, but it needs to be reformed.

Businessman Eddie Rispone says after recent reports of improper spending in the Medicaid program, he would place a hold on new applicants until the Department of Health could rectify its problem with ineligible recipients on the rolls.

Former Saints center Max Unger says he decided to retire from football, because he didn’t think he could put his 32-year-old body through another season. Unger says injury issues to his lower body was making it difficult for him to get even in his stance.

Some college football analysts outside of Louisiana said Orgeron was on the hot seat heading into the 2018 season, but that changed after the Tigers outperformed expectations. Moran says the contract extension will help the LSU football program build on last year’s success…

Orgeron’s buyout would increase to 10-million dollars with the amount set to decrease by 250-thousand dollars each month through March 2021 and then remain at four-million dollars for the rest of the contract. Athletic Director Joe Alleva has already signed the deal, it just needs the Board’s approval which Moran says should happen….

There’s less than a month left before federal taxes are due. Metairie CPA Tyler Johnson says the last few weeks have been mighty busy and getting busier as April 15th draws closer. Johnson says procrastinating in scheduling a time to sit down with someone to do your taxes could be a big mistake.

Johnson says one of the biggest things is making sure to keep an eye on the mail to make sure you get your tax docs together, whether its W-2s, 1099s, or health insurance.

Johnson says for those that need to file a six-month extension, it’s important to remember that the extension is only for filing a return, not for paying money if you owe on your taxes.

Congressman Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone, the two Republicans running against Governor Edwards in this year’s governor’s race, showed some differences in policy approach following a a business round table discussion hosted by the Republican Governor’s Association. Abraham says if elected he would not undo the Medicaid expansion, but it would be reformed.

Abraham says his experience as a rural doctor would help guide his decisions on Medicaid reform.
